(1997-98)pdfWCHS ARCHIVES Winston Churchill High School 1997-1998 ChuiMllNews May 30,1998 Special Edition, Grad '98 After twelve years of school the Class of 1998 held their graduation ceremonies on May 30,1998. The day was only just beginning when photos of the class were taken starting at 9:00 in front of the Yates. The students then moved over to Just 3&?un... Next the graduates and their families moved to the school to attend the Grand March. This may have been the last ceremony of the day but the night, like the lives of the graduates, had only just begun. The events of the day would not Southminister Church where Convocation was held with hostess. Eysill Hernandez, Class President. Here, 210 graduates received their high school diplomas. Angela Thompson was announced as Valedictorian for 1998. It was evident in these ceremonies that Churchill Pride was in the students, the staff, and the parents. * After this the graduates dispersed to get ready for the banquet starting at 5:30 at the Lethbridge Lodge. An enjoyable meal was served while family and friends visited. For this event the Grad Chairperson, Tanya Sterenburg acted as hostess. Toasts and entertainment foPowed. It was here where two people in particular were found who held Churchik Pride close to their hearts. Scott Crabb and Joanna Gorny were announced as Mr. and Miss . Churchill for 1998. have been possible without the work of the Grad committee or the three staff members who spent tireless hours working to make the day memorable for their students. Churchill News August 29,1997-J une26,1998 Volume I, Issue 3 Grade 12 Students Prime Suspects Grade 12 students have been interrogated thoroughly by representatives of the Churchill Internal Bureau of Investigation regarding the on going search for missing Churchill Pride. This group of students has been targeted as the prime suspects in the case. It is felt that these students have vast knowledge of Churchill Pride that they have gathered over the past three years. „ These students have the capacity to take Churchill Pride with them when they graduate which would devastate Churchill. From the evidence the CIBI has compiled about this group we can see several trends. The grade 12’s have been observed taking leadership roles within: • grad committee • clubs • student’s council. • sports teams • the school television show • the music program This leads us to believe that Churchill Pride exists within the graduating class. When asked if the grade 12 class had taken school spirit, Jelena Matic was quoted as saying “Spirit...what spirit?” Eysill Hernandez and Dan Lacelle were questioned and both answered “We see Churchill Pride every day”, a suspicious answer. Should we suspect this group at all? Welcome to a new school year! This one seems bound to be exceptional in many ways, and I’m sure we will all learn many useful things about teaching, learning, and researching effectively in mostly online settings. In this column I share information that may help you navigate some copyright-related aspects of your fall courses. How can I include films in my online course? This is a copyright question that ULFA members have been asking frequently over the past several months. And the answer? As the saying goes, the devil is in the details . . . which can vary widely from one film to the next. In case you, too, have been wondering about this, I’ll sketch some scenarios that may be similar to your circumstances, as well as some possible, copyright-compliant solutions. These scenarios contemplate films that are copyrighted, but if the films you wish to use are not copyrighted or are openly licensed, you will have a broader array of options. In-class screening of a film on DVD In this scenario, pre-COVID you may have signed out a Library DVD or used your personal copy of a film for an on-campus class screening. If you now wish to screen the same film in a synchronous online class, is the physical (lawfully acquired) DVD available to you? If it is, one option may be to play the DVD on the computer you are hosting your Zoom class on, while you share your screen with the class. This approach is covered by s. 29.5 (d) of the Copyright Act, which permits educational institutions to publicly perform films in class, provided that certain conditions are met. Two of those conditions stipulate that screenings must take place “on the premises of an educational institution” and must be “for educational or training purposes.” As University-supported access to Moodle, Zoom, and YuJa are essentially online extensions of, or alternatives to, the University’s physical premises, as long as you use a lawful source that isn’t subject to terms and conditions limiting you to personal, non-commercial use and you observe all conditions noted in s. 29.5 (d), you should be able to show the film in your synchronous class. If you plan to record your synchronous classes, however, it’s best to turn off the recording during your film screening to avoid issues with copyright infringement. There are some technical considerations to keep in mind if you choose to do a synchronous film screening from a DVD. If you are using Zoom, it is best to install and use the Zoom desktop client. This will enable you to turn on Share computer sound and Optimize Screen Sharing for Video Clip, both of which are located at the bottom of the Share Screen pop-up window. In addition, it may be helpful to use a hard-wired ethernet connection to provide more stable Internet connectivity. And if you are hosting on a Mac, the default Mac DVD player may block screen sharing while playing the video. In such cases, you may wish to use VLC, an open-source, freely downloadable media player instead. On-demand viewing In this asynchronous scenario, you would like to assign some films as required viewing but are not planning to screen them in a synchronous class. Or perhaps you are planning a synchronous screening but want to arrange for on-demand viewing for students who miss the in-class screening. What are your options here, since the pre-COVID ability to place a DVD film on Library Reserve for viewing outside of class time is not available at this time? 2 A good first step is to contact your subject librarian with details of the film(s) you want to use. Your subject librarian will help you determine whether the film is available in any of the Library’s streaming video collections. If a streaming source isn’t already in place, subject librarians will typically ask the Library’s ordering staff to investigate the availability of commercial streaming sources for educational institutions. When a suitable streaming source is located, your subject librarian will likely order a streaming license or purchase perpetual streaming rights. It’s worth noting that sources like Netflix, iTunes Movies, YouTube paid access, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ are not available to the Library, as these services operate under terms and conditions that allow subscribers to access and use the streaming content only for personal, non-commercial use. Even if you have a personal subscription to a film streaming service, it is unlikely to be suitable for in-class screenings, as explained in this Copyright website FAQ. Commercial streaming unavailable What happens if the film you need on-demand access for your course doesn’t appear to be available to educational institutions from a commercial streaming source? In such cases, the subject librarian will usually forward the details about the film to me in the Copyright Advisor office for an assessment of other options. One that may be applicable is making a screen recording of the film from a Library-owned DVD under the Copyright Act’s fair dealing provision. Factors that help tilt a fair dealing assessment toward fairness include an instructor’s determination that the film is needed for the course and that there are no suitable non-copyrighted alternatives, no known commercially available streaming source, using a Library-owned copy in its permanent collections to make the streamable copy, controlled and secure streaming only to students in the class, access limited to the term in which the course is taught, and no ability for students to download the film. When the Library copies a film under fair dealing for use in a course, we do so by making a screen recording. This is time-consuming but important because access to a film on DVD is usually protected by CSS (content scrambling system). CSS is an example of what s. 41 of the Copyright Act considers to be a “technological protection measure” (digital lock). Further, the Act prohibits the circumvention of digital locks, which means if you use any of the widely available apps to rip a DVD in order to copy its contents, you are infringing copyright even if the content itself is not protected by copyright. Films copied by the Library for use in a course will be stored on YuJa and accessed via a direct (password-protected) link that instructors can post in Moodle. In such cases, downloading will always be disabled, and access will be terminated at the end of the semester in which the course is taught. YouTube videos This scenario is unchanged by COVID. If you wish to embed or link to videos in Moodle, it’s advisable to choose content you are reasonably sure was uploaded to the video sharing platform (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo) by, or with the authorization of, the copyright owner. For example, if you want students to view a CBC news clip or film, choose a source that is provided or hosted by the CBC itself. When in doubt, always feel free to email [email protected] with links to content you wish to use – we’ll be happy to have a look and advise on whether they are likely to be copyright-compliant. 3 Alternatives to Library Reserve Pre-COVID, if you relied on being able to place physical materials like books and videos on Library Reserve, what are your options, since the physical Library building is not open for now? You may want to consider E-Reserve, which continues to be available. If you’re not sure whether certain items can be placed on E-Reserve, feel free to consult with your subject librarian or send details of the items you have in mind to [email protected]. In my May/June 2020 column I briefly mentioned that the U of L is a partner in a province-wide initiative hosted by the U of A to support creation and publication of open educational materials. I sincerely hope that its reception by the students will be worthy of the amount of time and effort that were required for its completion. To the students who will graduate this year, I would like to express my best wishes for your future success. It is a platitude to say that difficult times await graduates of these days, but difficult times to young people present a challenge you must endeavor to meet courageously. If you have learned, during the last four years, to face your difficulties squarely, to analyse them and to think your way through them, the time spent in this school has been a good investment and you have taken the first s*tep towards success. I think most failures are due to the fact that so many people try to evade the ordinary problems of life instead of trying to solve them. Such are the easy-going people who never get anywhere in life, and who lack moral courage and strength of character when they are brought face to face with difficulties that cannot be evaded. The measure of your success in life will depend, to a very great extent, on the manner in which you approach your problems. You cannot expect to be always successful in your undertakings, you must be prepared to accept the sting of defeat and failure, but you need, as part of the game, never to be satisfied with failure or accept it as final. In other years some of our year books have implored the students to have more school spirit. This happily, is not our task. The abundance of enthusiasm launched by the Booster Club in the fall has continued throughout the year, instilling into the students a spirit of co-operation and zeal. Without these qualities success is not possible, yet with them all things are possible. As proof of this we need only to glance back and pick out a few of the more outstanding events. Rugby enthusiasts cheered our Senior and Intermediate teams to championships before crowded stadiums, thus completing one of the most successful rugby seasons Crescent Heights has ever had. The girls followed up with two basketball championships. The Students’ Council reorganized our school paper and undertook the purchasing of the Gestetner, which was no small task. Social functions, plays, concerts and dances have in practically every case been successful. While we have been successful in extra-curricular activities we claim that our school is also supreme in scholarships. Our teachers, every one among the best in the city, are the principal reason for our prowess in learning. So now at the end of the year we beg those who are graduating to retain this spirit throughout life in the search for success, and those who are left behind to retain it for the greater glory of Crescent Heights. Let enthusiasm be manifest. __-TOM MACFARLANE. ALL FOR ONE This year a noteworthy change has taken place in the general setup of our student body. Those who came to Crescent Heights from East Calgary are no longer strangers in our midst, but now are numbered in the brotherhood and sisterhood of the great clan of Crescent Heights students. In no small way did they contribute to the success of the year. The schism has been repaired, oneness has been restored. We now repeat with all emphasis possible, “All for one and one for all.” —TOM MACFARLANE. This year Mr. Dobson has left us after a year’s stay, but while he was here he was an established favorite. When I walk through the halls I see an incredible variety of individuals who have learned almost as much outside the classroom as inside during their time here at LCI. Whether that's from playing on sports teams, acting in the drama production of the Hobbit, volunteering through NHS, traveling to Europe, singing and dancing in New York, or just hanging out in the halls before class and making new friends. We're all lucky to go to LCI as it provides numerous opportunities outside the classroom that we can get involved in and find out what our true interests and passions really are. High school is a short four years, so to all the returning students, I encourage you to get involved at school and make the most of these opportunities, as they will help you develop into mature, independent adults. Here at LCI we are able to both attain and apply knowledge, as well as prepare ourselves for the path we will take after graduation. It is in the halls of this school that so many of us learned both academic lessons, as well as life lessons. What is so incredible about LCI is that the scope of academics covers a broad range of subjects, of which we have students excelling in all areas. Ram Pride. Clipper Pride. LCI Pride. This is the essence of what we do here. It does not matter if you play sports, are in drama, choir, band, clubs, class or just walk the halls of LCI. You cannot ignore the amazing school spirit we have. LCI is for everyone. We have so much to offer everyone that finding something that interests you is easy. We have so much to be proud of. It almost seems mundane to start listing our accomplishments considering the fact that we have some of the most well developed programs out there. Whether it is our dance program, drama productions, Jazz and Chamber Choirs, along with the LCI Singers. It may be our sports teams, with all their various success, or the strong academic programs that make us proud of LCI. It may be the fact that you can find friends here, or a club, a student organization, intramurals, contests, charity or just a little piece of some obscure hallway to call your own. Whatever it is, LCI has become a part of your life. Too often in life we forget to celebrate the simple pleasures. When you are all grown up and think back on your time here at LCI, you won't remember details. You will remember feelings. LCI Teachers have spirit too. Any time there is a special occasion or color day a good percentage of staff dress up and get in on the fun. Mavis Dyson, from Student Support, is one of many always eager to get involved and show off their school spirit. Get a helmet on, because when there is candy on the line it can get nasty. During the chilly months girls wrapped themselves up in a stylish scarf. While in the months of fall and spring girls wore skinny jeans and flats along with a bold necklace. There were a lot of creative outfits worn with out advertising brand names. Some of the major brand names seen in LCI this year were Areopostale, Hollister, Abercombie and Fitch which were worn by both males and females. Paris Hiltons BBF (British best friend), Bromance, and the Real Life all revolve around relationships. These pop culture televisions shows are a reflection of what we young people think is important in our lives - our friends. Entering grade nine at LCI seems threatening. Without friends to walk with you down the never ending hallways, school would get pretty intimidating. By grade ten you meet a few pals that can show you a good time and life begins! "What math homework?", is your most used phrase and it becomes pretty easy to forget that school is a place of knowledge and not a social gathering hot spot. But in grade eleven you find a healthy balance, you start to get to know your grade pretty well, you get involved in school activities, and you take a few courses that you actually have to study for. Up to this point every May throughout your high school career you watch the seniors, yes the guys with the full beards and the girls whose boyfriends are way too old to be hanging out at a high school, put on gowns and tuxes to celebrate their graduation. In the hallways you hear about all the crazy grad week stories as a grade twelve stumbles by in sweat pants and yet you just can't wait for it to be you and your friends to graduate next. When grade twelve does roll around, it goes by fast, yet somehow all of the graduates find the time to come together and you enjoy your last year making up silly nicknames for others, playing games including push ups and the word mine, and becoming pals with the very same teachers who ostracized you in grade nine. High school is where friends are made and sometimes lost. It is where you learn how to text message in the pocket of your jeans and sneak out of class to get a slurpee with your friends. ,Z ■ e). Ross Buckley and Jacquie Nordquist. ■ Student Ute ■ Christmas At LCl we sure know how to bring in the holiday cheer and deck the halls with boughs of holly. What better way to celebrate the holiday season is there than with a Christmas Carnival! Christinas Week was a big hit with different activities n December 19th 2009, Students Council put on a Christmas Carnival to celebrate the holiday season, the end of the year, and school spirit. This was done through the efforts of many people who helped to make it happen. Events included watching the newly released Batman movie The Dark Knight in full theatrical fashion with a big projector screen and surround sound, bringing the streets of Gotham City to life at LCI. The actual carnival itself included events such as karaoke, darts, a basketball shoot-out, and even a famous Japanese Christmas tradition - Sumo Wrestling! The carnival ended up being a total and utter success, being a place for students to have fun, and others to show off their talent, like chugging coke, for instance. And of course, what would a Christmas carnival be without no one other than good old jolly St. Nick (commonly referred to as Santa Claus, or Sendai Shiro in Japan) Students from LCI's art department even created masterpieces of their own by sketching out portraits of LCI students to exhibit their extraordinary talent. These advisee's filled several gift boxes with items they purchased. These boxes then went to underdeveloped countries, for a happier Christmas. A rarer sight, this student has brought his laptop as well to, of course, get work done. Not play games, no, not at all. One student catches some Z's in class. Don’t forget to rest your eyes during extended periods of computer use! There's nothing quite like doing your class work with the sound of your own music literally budding from your ears. "Without a doubt, technology has become integrated into the public life. Everything and anything is portable, even our personalities. With social media storming up the way we interact, everyone you could possibly want to know will become just a text-message or a Facebook away." Saif Zahir Bits and Bytes and Everything Nice Technology is a persistent force in the student body. You just can't seem to avoid it; it's part of life. iPhone, therefore iAm. It's by this motto the student body seems to operate. It's incredible to think about how quickly it takes for something to be antiquated. The technology of just a couple years ago seems almost primitive compared to the present (What is this button you speak of? Is it anything like a touch-screen?) Indeed, the acceleration of advancement is almost a blur, and it seems that only through the eyes of the youth that you could keep track of it all. It was quite a stupendous year in terms of updates and upgrades to add to the existing. Massive overhauls to the social website Facebook, the release of Apple's ubiquitous iPhone 3G, Google Earth v5.0, Youtube's high-definition transition the list is endless. It's inspiring yet also somewhat terrifying to imagine what new advents in technology await, what new attempts of integration become apparent. Will the youth become master of the medium, like in Japan or South Korea? This year with many fresh faces on Council, there were plenty of new ideas brought to the drawing board. With the world showing an increasing trend of environmental concern students council spearheaded a Clean Water initiative; where students drink from re-usable water bottles, instead of purchasing plastic ones. Our initiative resulted in the Environmental sub-council. This year Students Council supported the: Canadian Cancer Society, Schools for Children, Power of the Penny, Lethbridge Food Bank, Clean Water Initiative, and Canadian Blood Services. With school spirit on the decline, this year Students Council initiated weekly Green & Gold days. At first students were hesitant, but the trend caught on. Pep-rallies too were feeling the twangs of disinterest from the Student body. This year Students Council - by use of draw prizes and free pizza increased attendance and the school fervor at all three of our major Pep rallies. Putting the finishing touches on the plans for the March Pep Rally As well with Sam the Ram getting old, Students Council funded Sam's makeover. Students Council also hosted one dance this year: LCI Spring Fling, which is sure to be a hit. With free food, drinks, and a live D.J., who could pass it up? The week before Christmas Break is always a hard one to concentrate through, what with presents, and No School on the brain. So this year Students Council hosted LCI's first winter carnival which boasted numerous games, candied apples, and pictures with Santa Claus. - Remi Winder % LIVING IN THE MOMENT LIVING IN THE MOMENT LIVING IN THE MOMENT LIVING IN THE MOMENT President's Message Living in the moment is a feat most have difficulties accomplishing. There is always a schedule to follow, a bell to listen for; high school is full of due dates, exams, and structure. Because someone says you're a nerd or a jock doesn't mean you have to give into the stereotype. There is nothing worse than settling for something below your level of capability; there is a big world out there! When it comes right down to it, if you bomb a math test, you bomb a math test, do better next time. Don't get stuck on the little things in life; find out who you truly are and don't be afraid of the outcomes. We now live life stuck in our own box; cell phones and internet messaging leave no room for true personal interactions. Don't become cut off from the world just because you can. Watch out for others, friend or foe alike, and don't give up on any endeavors. LCI is a diverse school, full of one-of-a-kind opportunities, make the most of your short time here; it passes unbelievably fast! As grade twelve students, we have had the opportunity to reflect on these past four years. Remember how you grew and changed through attending LCI. Think of the goals achieved and the ones developed. Leave past difficulties behind; take with you only the good. All graduating students: there are so many outstanding possibilities out there, don't leave life to fate. Look past the superficial opposition, and towards your true goals, working forward to your true potential! The purpose of the National Honor Society organization is to create enthusiasm for the pursuit of academics, to stimulate a desire for community service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of LCI. In our 2008-2009 school year, the student executive consisted of: Brent Fikowski, President; Saif Zahir, Vice-President; Leanne Dalton, Secretary; Remi Winder, Events Coordinator; Aimee De Laurentiis, Promotions; Michelle Robertson, Grade 12 Rep; Antony Cheech Hall, Grade 11 Rep. NHS this year included 140 students who met in the library two Wednesdays per month. With so many students, the executive created an increased amount of volunteer opportunities for all members. We sent volunteers to help with the set-up for the Alberta Senior Games, assist with many of the school's sporting tournaments, usher for drama and dance productions, and to fundraise for the Heart & Stroke foundation, Kidney foundation, Salvation Army and the Canadian Cancer Society. We were also involved in the What's your type campaign in preparation for the Canadian Blood Services High School Blood Drive Challenge, and we helped young elementary students in the homework club. For the second year in a row, LCI’s NHS offered the LCI AP conference where grade eleven and twelve AP students from LCI had the opportunity to learn from various business people and University professors about career paths and future schooling options. One of the new additions to the NHS this year was the use of the online site MOODLE for organizing NHS events; with this webpage students are now able to sign up for volunteer events anytime, and update their total volunteer hours conveniently. This year was no different, as students defined their time spent at LCI as more than just conventional education. With a long list of activities and clubs that include everything from sports teams, fine arts productions, and intramurals, to volunteer groups, travel clubs, planning committee's and many others, an LCI student is given an abundance of chances to find out what they enjoy and have a passion for at the school. In addition, one can never underestimate the importance of taking that extra time to make a new friend, or strengthen a relationship with an old one. There is no doubt that this year students at LCI learned as much about life, and themselves, as their school subjects. The younger grade nine's and ten's started to come into their own, discovering whole new truths about their personalities and interests, while the older grade 11's and 12's prepared themselves to enter the world as confident, independent adults, ready for anything. This is probably because of the relationships you build with boy/girlfriends and teachers. Many friends will come and go but if you're lucky enough, you can make friendships that will last a lifetime. High school is a time of personal growth which can sometimes be intimidating, but if you realize that you're not alone, it can be great. Treasure your relationships no matter how big or small and never underestimate the power of a great friendship. - Nicola Spencer. HANGING OUT Between classes and the busy hustle and bustle of LCI, students always find the time to hang out. Whether it be a quick chat in the halls, participating in intra-murals, or grabbing a bite to eat in the cafateria. Chilling out with friends gives students a break from the stress of everyday life. - Courtney Andreachuck 5 I Students Council sponsored a number of first time events that were very successful. Bottom Flight: Speed Dating was held in the large gym on Valentines Day. A BREAK IN THE ACTION? The Lunch Break is chaos at best at the LCI. Forty-five minutes isn't a very long time even if you're just spending it eating and hanging out. The lunch break is also the only time that clubs can meet and let's not forget about Intramurals. Even if you are an expert at navigating the halls with 1500 others, for most Lunch Time is anything but a break! 6 7 I This year we held 3 major BBQ's outside of the foyer at the "bricks". Each BBQ was a sellout success, selling tons of delicious burgers and pop. Students were decked out in green and gold for the Sports Appreciation Barbecue, Green and Gold BBQ, and the Grad08 Fundraiser BBQ. Proceeds from the barbecues helped fund numerous Student Council activities. To the right we can see the sea of green and gold waiting patiently (or not so patiently) for their burgers. There Are Many Shades Of Green & Left: Many students like Tory Boschee were happy to help support their fellow students by sporting their favourite Green and Gold attire. When students display their colors to proudly support the spirit of LCI Athletics they do it in many shades of Green and Gold, but their purpose is all the same - SCHOOL PRIDE! Not only is it just an opportunity for students to relax from regular classes but it allows everyone to be a little bit goofy. Our Colour Days represent school pride and the fun we can have. We often show off our colours to support our sports teams. During our eventful pep-rallies, the students dress up and could be luckily selected to participate. Students that fully take on and welcome the opportunity to dress up and entertain can easily receive prizes, such as a booster juice. 1 Y'M' if y Jgg On some particular Colour Days, Student Council can be found outside the school flipping burgers. These barbeques offer students a steal of a deal for a burger and a pop if they are wearing green and gold. Not only do we just represent sports achievements when we celebrate on green and gold days, but we also celebrate our wonderful fine arts. Many talented students get up on stage and show off their musical side. LCI students, like Natasa Sipcic, crowded the bricks for a chance to get a cheap barbecue meal, hangout with friends, and listen to some live tunes. It seems that every student can find something for themselves, whether it be in our celebrated Advanced Placement Program, which allows students to challenge themselves in more traditional academic disciplines such as math, language, social studies and the sciences; our vibrant Fine Arts programs in dance, choir, band, drama, and the visual arts; or in our varied CTS programs such as drafting, foods, automotives, auto body, shop, fashion studies and cosmetology. One of the greatest advantages of attending a school as large as LCI is the myriad of programs which allow students the opportunity to explore their interests and develop their abilities. - Chris Rogers Right: The ILC Lab is just the right place for many students (like Craig McCarthy) to get the courses they need . 10 Greg Frick - smiling and having fun in a Chemistry lab - is that allowed? Our formal education system was a big change for her. 11 I Our student council this year was finally successful in putting on a dance for us. Announced at a Pep Rally, the theme "Masquerade" had everyone dressing their best and getting a little crafty A group of grade nine girls having a blast at the dance. with their masks, as Austin Ogrins and Mike Goldie did in the upper right photo. It was so successful we demanded another dance later on in the year...a rave perhaps! Trevor Harding Jessie Dick 12 This was an awesome year for dances at LCI. We held two dances this year. The first was a Masquerade - themed dance in November and the second was a "Leap Year's Eve” theme which happened in February. Preferences are about equal actually. One thing for certain though, our cell phones are driving teachers crazy. Cell phones have taken over our social lives. I live in a rural area, so it is nice that the kids have cell phones to let their parents know when they need to be picked up, if any schedules change, etc. Plus, a lot of these kids are driving themselves back and forth to school by the time they are 16 (school permits) so it is nice that they have them in case of an emergency. But.... students have their phones with them all the time, in the hallways and in the classes, not only to talk, but also to text and listen to music. Cell phones started out as an emergency device, used only sparingly; they are now being used by everyone and for everything. Ipods replaced personal cd players which replaced Walkmans (tape players). We are now on the 6th generation iPod. What will be next.... iphones perhaps! Many students in the school use cell phones for a good part of the day. Left: In any given class, 70% of the students will have a cellphone with them. This Foods class was evidence of these stats. Chrissey Safinuk says she has had a cell phone since she was in grade 9 and this latest generation iPod for 6 months. 15 Accessories Accessories this year were very flashy and stylish, as well as comfortable and at all times wearable. Designer and fake designer bags were big trends this school year. Walking down the hallways you would find girls flaunting their Ugg boots, showing that these were popular! Ugg boots can be dressed up or dressed down for any occasion. Placing bandaids on your heels or a pair of nylons will help to ease the pain of breaking them in. - Not a morning person? Showering before you sleep and choosing a perfect outfit the night before will help ease your morning stress and give you extra time to get ready. - Bad skin? Cleaning your hair of products before you go to bed rids your face from getting clogged pores due to sleeping on pillow cases full of hair products. Left: Jami and Mercedes are all dressed up. Lululemon is a growing trend for people of all ages. EMO / Unique Style - is an expresssion of individuality, whether it be through hair styles or accessories. EMO style uses a variety of fabrics, patterns and designs to portray individuality. ■Chelsea Allard shows off her style. Wearing a designer piece will help you achieve a more dressy look. A designer necklace or a bag with your favourite pair of heels pulls this style off. This style is dressed to fit the more laid back and comfortable person. Many students can be found dressed in their usual comfy wear, but Tynisha pulls it all together with cute accesories such as oversized earrings and Ugg's. For casual outfits suited for everyday life, try a fashion top mixed with your everyday jeans and a cute pair of ballet flats. These pull together this ordinary day look for Mariah. 17 I Talk About Variety! With a student population of over 1500 at LCI, our school has a little taste of everything. It's great to know that you can come to school every day and meet a new person and make a new friend. Amidst the crowded hallways and long cafeteria lines, LCI students feel a great sense of unity. Even though we come from different places or have different interests, we all have one thing in common we all call LCI our home. The backbone of our school comes from the amazing staff of teachers, counsellors, office workers, and caretakers that do their best everyday to serve LCI's student population. Hamburgers, Why? You may notice, as you flip through the pages of this yearbook, that there is a theme of hamburgers. Now, you may be asking yourself why hamburgers, right? The staff of this year’s yearbook felt it was time for a theme of an original nature since the theme is something most people don’t even take notice of. Hamburgers are something everyone has noticed and enjoyed at one time or another, and likewise we hope you enjoy this yearbook because these are the memories that are held in all of us. 5 6 Student Council Despite what most people think, being on students council does require a lot of co-curricular involvement. One of the many duties of council members is to maximize the student body’s participation in activities outside of regular school work. Members serve as a means of communication between the students and administration and the faculty. Students council also raises funds which are required by many of our co-curricular programs. They are also responsible for organizing various activities for the students. The team, although fairly young, pulled together quickly and started off on a good note. As time, practices and games went on, the team battled with tough competition and terrible weather. Carrying much pride and determination the Bulldogs cracked the playoffs. Preparing for the biggest game of the season, the team held nothing back and came down to the last minute of the semi-final game before being inched out by some desperate Raymond Comets. Winston Churchill, although not league champions, did receive much credit as many top quality players were awarded all-star recognition at both the league and team banquets. Coach - Tom Menard Sluggers WINSTON CHURCHILL BULLDOG BASEBALL TEAM Winston Churchill High School entered into the Southern Alberta High School Baseball League this spring for the first time. Initially we have had up to thirty-five potential players out for practise. Eath team is allowed to carry 21 players. All of our Bulldog home games will be played in Henderson Stadium, and all of our games with L.C.I. and C.C.H. will also be played at Hendersons League play will begin either the last week of April or the first week in May. We will play twelve games prior to play-offs. The Bulldogs wish to include the entire Churchill Family in every game, with the hope that you will come out and help to create the first ever Winston Wave! by Garry Shilliday Smashers Future Olympians INTRAMURALS The Intramurals program is designed to get students involved with other students while participating in enjoyable activities. The purpose of intramurals is not to see who’s better but rather having a good time while participating in “friendly" competition with your peers. The program covers various activities such as; soccer, volleyball, badminton, reach for the top, chess, team handball and field hockey. Intramurals is designed for the students and teachers. For those who participated, it was fun. Sandy Kanashiro 67 68 Drama 70 Works of Art 71 The Winston Choir, this year under the direction of Mark Ward, has improved immensely since the beginning of this year. Although, in some cases, we noted the absence of male voices, we still managed to get some good harmonies. This year, again, we are hoping to succeed in the Kiwanis Music Festival, and we may even make it to the Provincial choir competition, as we did last year. Last year we won the Provincial Competition, but were defeated in Regionals. It will take a while until we’re all in top singing form, but we're progressing steadily. At the rate we’re going, other choirs don’t stand a chance. Sherry Baird 72 Music! The Food of Love J 73 Hitting the Slopes 74 Greece/London While the rest of the students were sitting in school the last day before Easter, 15 W.C.H.S. students lead by Carol and Don Firth joined students from C.C.H.S. for a different holiday. We took 14 days off through Easter spending 10 days throughout Greece and 4 days in London. We left Lethbridge on the morning of April 4th for Calgary where we boarded our plane for Toronto. We transferred planes and left again, this time stopping in London before arriving in our final destination - Athens. Because of the time difference we spent our first day resting for the rest of our stay in Greece. Throughout those first 10 days our travels through Greece took us to places like Athens, Lindos, Delphi and to the island of Rhodes where we visited various museums and some ancient buildings and ruins. We also had free time for shopping and to explore the cities on our own. The 10 days in Greece were quite interesting and exciting because of the difference in our two countries, such as the food, people, dress and customs. Coping with the difference in language was a problem but brought us some fun and humorous moments. We arrived in London on April 13 for the last half of our trip. Even though England is a lot more similar to Canada than Greece is, the cultural difference can still be noticed. We spent those 4 days visiting places like Windsor Castle, The Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and the famous Wax Museum. We also attended 2 musical performances, “Cats” and “Starlight Express”. The 14 days passed quickly and we found ourselves boarding the plane to take us home. Even though we were happy to be going home we also didn’t want to leave. The trip gave us numerous memories of Greece and London, taught us about their history and culture, but also brought us closer together with the rest of the people on our trip. by Dave Clearwater 75 I.E.P. 76 At' Individual Enrichment Program (I.E.P.) is designed for students who achieve excellence in academics. The Program is run by Mr. Jim Hamilton. In it we learn how to prepare ourselves in a possible career field such as Medicine, Law, Engineering, Arts and Science, Music and others. Last December 6, 1984, 10 students went to the University of Calgary and talked with people who were members of the Faculty of Medicine, Law and Engineering. Some students that were in the program are now going to the University of Lethbridge to major in Arts and Science. They are Dawna Adachi, Mike Bollinger, Randy Davis, Trevor Kenny and Kats Kuroshima. Pat Willms and Bev Hopp are majoring in Language. At the University of Alberta Kyo Constable is majoring in Pharmacy, Wesley Inaba in Computer Technology, Shelley Spence in Pre-Law, Kham Philomrak in Pre-Dentistry. Karen Willms is at the University of British Columbia majoring in Performing Arts and Adrian Kaufmann is a performer and vocalist throughout Western Canada. Being in the program is a lot of hard work but we also have fun. Topics vary from “Freshmen on the Floor’’ to “Coming of the Computer Age”, but whatever the issue the newspaper staff is on hand to receive the facts and the funnies. What was your favourite MEMORY AT C S? -Helping TRENA with holiday dinners - -Consistent socialization with FRIENDS - -My favourite memory would probably be talking with JEFF DAVIS and listening to him say how good he is at curling. He isn't good. I can beat him - -Classes with all the boys - -Too MANY to pick one - -Before I came to CHURCHILL, the choir was known as the Women's Choir. Today, it’s known as the CHURCHILL CHORUS, due to men's involvement in the program. Many took much convincing but now, we have a multitude of guys who bolster our roster. -The BAND TRIP to Disneyland because i was able to chill with my FRIENDS and have a good time - -Ordering my GRAD RING and HOODIE. -Playing on the BASKETBALL TEAM for the past 4 years with an amazing team. -My favorite memory is any of the TUNES IN JUNE performances. I loved how the school gathered to watch the band preform in the warm sun. -When I took TAE KWON-DO. -ff*~ -taking a DRAMA class -Aight aight aight so we're in COMPUTER SCIENCE 20/30 with Nevin, Slade goes to the bathroom. I sneak the opportunity to change his Google chrome background to a bunch of anime girls. When he returns, we (myself and a few friends) chastise him for using internet explorer and not Google chrome. Finally he reluctantly opens chrome only to see what we did. He stands up and screams "WHAT THE #*! ETHWYN" with Nevin standing right next to him. 10/10 would do it again, -Hanging out with FRIENDS and also playing basketball. -Playing my senior year of VOLLEYBALL iMfMII 28 CROSS COUNTRY Back row- Geoff Waugh, Koreen Klassen, Luke Fekete, Isreal Suzuki, Kia Ichikawa, Jackson Lowe, Chris Morden. Front row- Laurel Zieber, Lena Boin, Ailene MacMahon. The Churchill Cross Country team competed well this year, multiple students participated and represented CHURCHILL proudly. Despite frigid temperatures and wet grass at the Pumpkin Run, the team ran strong and even coaches Geoff and Koreen got a pumpkin for their efforts on the turf. Several athletes participated in the Zones meet. Although the meet took place in early October, the entire course was a frozen, snowy, slushy wonderland. All athletes who participated ran exceptionally well despite the conditions. The Churchill Cross Country TEAM was proud to be represented at Provincials this year, held in Vermillion. All athletes who participated improved on their time and moved up several rankings in their categories. BULLDOG FOOTBALL: The 2018 Bulldogs Football campaign was highlighted by a group of players who showed grit and a true love of the sport of football. After graduating only two players this year the BULLDOGS look to have a strong season in 2019 with a whiley group of veterans and some good young talent coming up the ranks from the Bantam program. Good Luck to our two graduating players, Noah and Adam In all of their future endeavors. ,7 OYS VOLLEYBALL CHURCHILL PRIDE The Gr. 9 BULLDOG team had a successful season. They finished positive in league and lost out going to the semis for playoffs by a couple of points. They won the Barnwell TOURNAMENT and had a ton of growth throughout the season. Thank you for your dedication boys! The SENIOR Bulldog team had a very STRONG finish to their season. They finished league with a big battle against CCH and then showed well at zones finishing 1st in their pool. Thank you to the SENIORS and all they have dedicated to the program in the past four years. Way to finish this season boys! The JV BULLDOG team had some very close matches this year and played fantastic in the round robins of their TOURNAMENTS. They often took teams to the 3rd sets and improved immensely from the beginning of the year. They also had a strong finish by winning our pool in the CHAMPIONSHIPS. Awesome focus boys! TOURNAMENT Results: Stirling Invitational champions Magrath Smash 3rd place Lethbridge College tied 3rd place At zones the GRIFFINS finished 1st in pool play which set up a semi final contest against host Crescent Heights, Unfortunately the GRIFFINS just missed out on attending Provincials losing to CHS in 4 games. The three teams did very well in the round robin play during the year. 40 Our Boys team qualified for the SOUTH ZONE play downs finishing second over Track and Field We had a VERY young TRACK TEAM this year, not a single senior on the roster. This young team brought a lot of energy to practice every day and we were very excited to see the enthusiasm and passion they brought to competition in late May. We had a big group of highly competitive grade 10's who made their mark on not only the CITY RECORD BOOK but also the ZONE RECORD BOOK and the podium in CALOARY in June. Patrick was worried that his beard was in serious jeopardy again this year! This work ethic resulted in a very strong showing throughout the season as well as in the playoffs and into the CHURCHILL hosted Provincial Championship tournament. Girls Rugby The Senior Girls Bugsy team had some rebuilding to do this year. With only 8 returning players and 2 Grade 12's, we had a lot of learning and growing to accomplish this season. The girls had a fun trip to Okotoks and Lacombe in April. They went on to be successful during a tough season and competed in PROVINCIALS. Thank you very much to our Grade 12 leaders that are graduating. The JV RUGBY team was packed full of Gr. 9's. In fact, it was one of the largest Gr. 9 groups in the past 10 years.
