Review
It is an honour and a privilege to be the principal of this fine
High School. Everyday it is my privilege to associate with
hundreds of students and staff members. This year we
have emphasized Value-Based Education. By becoming
better citizens, we have provided numerous services to our
community and set personal improvement goals.
Academically we continue to excel. This is fantastic.
Socially we have fun together; cheering on our teams,
going to school concerts, drama productions and dances
are a few examples of this fun.
We also have enjoyed and appreciated working with our
good friend and colleague Bob Tarleck. Bob left his
fantastic teaching career behind to take over the Mayor's
chair. We all wish him well and know he will be a great
mayor.
This yearbook is a lifelong momento. Please guard it and
cherish its’ memories and remember your friends, your
school and enjoy the book for years to come.
Special thanks to Karen Morden-Babick and all of the
students who have spent countless hours in preparing this
great yearbook.

There are thousands of reason’s I love Churchill, but there
are three reasons I absolutely love it.
The first is the staff. Churchill is the only school on the face
of this planet, or at least in Southern Alberta, where there is
not one unpopular teacher. Every teacher here is
someone’s favorite, and rightfully so.
The second reason is my peers. The most caring people I
have ever met are the students here. You can see it
everywhere, in the crowds, at games, in the cheers at pep
rally’s, in the halls where you see hugging, laughing and
talking. I think it comes from all of us knowing that no
matter who we are, we are part of the Churchill family.
And thirdly is something I have honestly never thought
possible for a high school. At least once a month
something breath-taking happens, something that takes
you back. It can be big like a school raising six hundred
bucks in four minutes, or something little like a snow man in
remembrance. That doesn’t happen once a month
anywhere, except at Churchill.

Review
At the Leadership Retreat on August
21 and 22 students gathered at the
school. It was an opportunity to get
to know new people and take part in
team building activities.
Many activities took place. They
went to Pavan Park for games and a
BBQ. Some lucky students were
hypnotised by the famous Bill
Bentley. They made aeroplanes,
bandannas and banners in the
cafeteria! They ate lots of great food
including ice cream, candy, burgers,
and lasagne.
When it was time to go to bed the
girls slept by the office and the boys
slept in Kathleen’s room; each group
talked until they were too tired to
move anymore. When it was time to
rise and shine everyone was in a
great mood and ready for another
fun day. They ended the retreat with
a water relay and were happy to say
that they felt like part of the Churchill
Family!

Review
Churchill Family is what our school is
all abou. On Fun Day, all WCHS
students were addressed with an
option of a day off school with no
penalties or a day cleaning up the
cities’ coulees. Over 700 of our 845
Churchill peers were present. We
swept up the coulees showing
amazing school spirit and heart.
A feast of hamburgers, pop, and
popcicles awaited our hungry
stomachs back at the school.We
were entertained by the battle cries
of the rookie Hurricanes..... er
....wait was that them singing
Kareokee? Keith Miller and
Rosanna Wood Dazzled us with their
rendition of Summer Love. Now
that’s Kareokee!
Food, great voices, hot guys and
girls in shorts, and did I mention
food? What a FUN DAY.

OCTOBER 2001
Review
In October we had our first Pep Rally. A video
introduced Senior Volleyball and Football
players. After that, the Cross Country and
Golf Teams were introduced.
After this exciting intro we were treated to an
outstanding performance by “East of Me”
singing “Foreplay”. This group had the crowd
going, and people who had heard the song
before were singing along.
Next, Tobie Spitzer and Braydon Epp
scrambled for ballons filled with money in a
pool of j-ello. Even though Braydon picked
Tobie up and dumped her in the muck she still
managed to find the money first.
The last event was the auctioning off of some
of our finest grade 12 men and our Grad Chair
Carly McCune. The highest bidders earned
the right to have a slave for a day. (Several of
these slaves came to school the next week
dressed as girls.) Proceeds went to the Grad
Committee and approximately $550.00 was
raised. We were treated to seeing Trevor
Brown perform a Striptease, and Jeb Molcak’s
Chip and Dale outfit.
Our first Pep Rally was a lot of fun and a good
send off for our Football Team who were on
their way to play LCI.

Review
What can be more fun than a bunch
of sweating teenagers all crammed
into one room with loud music blaring
in your ears? A Churchill Dance!
Oh... wait that is a Churchill Dance!
I suppose there’s more to our dances
than the sweating bodies. There’s
the great break dancing, especially
Greg Bane’s wonderful rendition.
And the Grade 10’s - their eyes were
so wide; they looked like they had
just walked into a night-club for the
first time. (And if you can keep a
secret, I think that they were dressed
for it too.) Perhaps those junior high
dances weren’t as great as our
Churchill dances. Actually, if you
think about it, no dance is greater
than our dances!

As the Churchill family grows we are
finding the school has become very full.
Not only are classes up to maximum
capacity but our weight room has turned
into a classroom and offices are turning
into teaching spaces.
Our classrooms are filled with 32+
students and getting through a hallway
between classes is yet another task.
Greg’s office had to be moved above the
band room into the Drama storage area
and many teachers have classrooms on
boxes or on carts. With teachers
integrating technology into regular
classes computer labs are always
occupied.
Being full has caused stress to students
and teachers alike. Students can’t
change timetables and teacher’s
marking loads are up. However, we
seem to work together as the Churchill
Family always does to make the best of
the situation. We sure can’t wait for the
renovations to start.

Review
At this year’s Halloween Dance more kids
dressed up than any other year! It was
great! Even though the DJ had problems
setting up, the kids still had tons of fun.
Many people had group costumes, like the
five babies, the Churchill Cheerleaders, the
Mafia, Josie and the Pussycats, and last
but not least, the Ninja Turtles!

It has been a “Construction Zona” year. August through December saw us under construction,
with the modernization of our office area, the addition of a new communication system,
the building of a counselling suite, a staff area and an open foyer for student lounging. For
the first time in this building s twenty five year history it was given a much needed "face-lift”
- one which makes us proud of Churchill s new image.
Winston Churchill staff and students have also been “under construction” with a new principal
leading the school through the development of a mission statement and setting new goals.
It has been an exciting year, and a tremendous beginning to our next quarter of a century.
Best wishes to those who leave us this year to “construct the next phase of their life career.
Remember your roots; you will always be part of the Churchill family. A special thanks to the
students, the staff, the parents and the community for the positive support and cooperation
this year, all of which is part of Churchill Pride.

This year, the theme has been
“Building”. This is largely because
of renovations the school has undertaken.
All of the noise and the mess
the school has been in made it look
like someone came in and trashed
the place, sadly forcing the office
staff into the cramped learning center.
However, aside from the actual
construction in the school, this has
been a big year in building school
spirit and togetherness amongst all
the students at WCHS. Student
Council this year has made a large
attempt at promoting ALL school activities
such as Fun Day and our
many dances to make it better for
all of us.
So in the end we now have a nicer
school with chimes for a bell and an
unbelievable level of spirit that is
known as Churchill pride. Thanks to
everyone who made this year a constructive
one that was great for all.

WCHS Music Program
1993-94 was a good year for the WCHS music
program. The list of performing groups included
Concert Band, Concert Choir, Select Choir and
Jazz Band. Two of our band members participated
in the Alberta Honour Band in Banff in the fall. Our
Christmas Concert was very successful with
exellent performances from all groups. The spring
tour saw the band and select choir travel to Banff
for five days. Other performances at the local
Kiwanis Music Festival, the Spring Concert and the
Concert in the Park completed the year's activities.

Art remains the most satisfying pursuit of knowledge available
at WCHS, and has become even more so with the inclusion of IB
art this year.
A highlight of the year was the opportunity for IB and senior
students to participate in casting bronze sculptures at the
University of Lethbridge in the fall, through the kindness of Dr.
Carl Granzow, U of L art professor.
IB and senior students also toured the Alberta College of Art
open house in November and are busily planning a trip to Europe
this summer to visit art galleries , shows and productions.
The art room facilities were caught up in the renovations made
to WCHS this year, which resulted in some drastic changes to
Shilliday's operation, but the addition of a computer has greatly
enhanced the artistic opportunities of all art students.
The Southern Alberta Art Gallery has become an integral part
of the WCHS art program this year, with the involvement of its
education personnel with our students and with its art rental
program. The school will benefit by the display of original works
by contemporary Canadian artists a couple of times each year for
a very nominal fee.

you're lost on a desert island. You think you're all alone but
you wake up and hear footsteps. What do you do?"
Churchill offers Drama 10-20-30 students a chance to
act and re-act in a variety of situations. The emphasis is
on acting-both with scripts and without scripts. Students
are encouraged to develop characters in a variety of
situations. Students who wish to pursue acting have a
chance to act in a variety of plays outside the classroom.

day of school. Your mother has left you alone at the front
door now what do you do?"

audiences with a great performance. A
number of students were involved both
on and off the stage in order to bring to
life the melodramatic tale of Rotton
Roderick Rodent, Sweet Madelaine
Mockingbird, and the artistic Jack
"Toulouse" Goodhart. The play
contained suspense, sensational
episodes, humor, romantic sentiment,
and a conventionally happy ending and
gave both the audience and the actors
an experience that will not soon be
forgotten.

"Iron-man Football" was the theme for the '93 Bulldogs
With only 22 players on the team, the Dogs finished at 2-6
for the season, but played the Provincial Championships
from our league to tougher games than they experienced at
the Provincial's Finals!
The team was led this year by Double All-Star Jordan
Valgardson (receiver and linebacker).
With half of this year's team graduating, there are a lot of
spaces to be filled by grade 10 and 11 athletes next
season.
The coaches and players thank the fans for their support
through a trying season.
