Injury stricken, our team pushed through, showcasing our Northside toughness and determination. Jace Bradley This year the golf “Team” found themselves practising and playing at Evergreen Golf Course. Between the lessons and games the students enjoyed their time and developed some great skills. The team also saw a number first time runners who did extremely well in zones. We have a strong growing nucleus of runners to look forward to next fall. The Griffins started off the season by capturing 2nd place in the pre-season tournament. They captured 2nd place at the Eagle Butte tournament in Medicine Hat and the Buccaneer Bash tournament in San Diego, California. The Griffins most successful accomplishment was finishing 2nd in the post-season league tournament. It was a season to remember! They played well as a team representing Churchill with the highest level of dignity. We won the L.C.I. Invitational Tournament defeating teams from Calgary and Edmonton. The season ended with an 82-77 loss to CCH in the 4A consolation semi-final. We couldn’t have asked for a better effort. The players enjoyed the social aspect of the game making new friends and having fun. Competitively, WCHS did exceptionally well in the round robin play. We had a strong number of girls, boy and mixed curlers who developed some excellent skills. One of the highlights this year was our boys team who won the South Zone play downs and competed in Provincials in Lloydminster. Following late fall auditions, the performing groups were selected from many North American ensembles to perform at Disneyland. This involved four performances. Of course, the students found time to visit Disneyland, Hollywood, Universal Studios, and San Diego's Sea World. All the Winston Churchill's performing groups are extremely busy during the year with school performances, Christmas Concerts, Music Fes­tival, Education Week Concert-ln-the-Park and year end concerts. Our Con­cert Choir had the wonderful opportunity to perform the Bach Cantata “For Us a Child is Born"with the professional string quartet Museus. We look for­ward to a great 1991-92 Year! Amber Pastoor: Some enchanted evening. 22 I f . ■ ■ - ■ ■ "I'm sorry. I can't remember any lines. I just don't recall attending a single rehear­sal." This is the actor's "nightmare" - being on stage and not remembering your lines or even the play that you are supposed to be performing. It was no nightmare for Churchill last year as they once again won the Southern Al­berta High School Drama Festival with the play "The Actor's Nightmare". This was the third time in the last four years that Chur­chill has won the festival. The play features two current Churchill students Amber Pastoor who gave a very strong performance as Sarah Siddons and Jenn Fletcher who won the Provincial Drama Festival Award for outstanding sup­porting actress in her role as Dame Ellen Terry. Drums 37 REFUGEES OF THE HEART Steve Winwood It's hard to believe that my 3 years at Churchill are almost over! Being on council for 3 years has really given me an insight into how our school works. With much dedication and hard work, student's council members, teachers and the students have made Churchill #1. Getting involved in sports, musical events, drama and other clubs have proven our school is full of spirit and pride. High school for me has been 3 years of lasting memories and friend­ships. My friends have helped me form values and morals that will stay with me forever. I will never forget anyone at Churchill, they will always be a part of my memories. I wish all the grade 10's and 11's the best of luck in the future, and remember to cherish your time here, it will be the best time of your life. The many hours of hard work seem to be paid back as we walk our final steps throughout the school. The students range from 15 to 19 years of age. Communication skills, Computation skills and Living/Voca­tional skills, are the educational ar­eas of focus. In addition, the students participate in a work experience pro­gram out in the community. We have also enjoyed many trips out into the community to explore leisure, and employment opportunities available to all in Lethbridge. Once again the Enrichment Stu­dents were involved in differentiated programming. Scholarship orienta­tions at the U of A and U of C were offered; interestingly, the students were able to stay with former stu­dents which enabled them to gain an insight into more than the academics. The grade ten and eleven students met throughout the year on a regular basis, which entailed several career mentorships. All grade twelve stu­dents will have a stream lined-portfolio completed for scholarship applications. Relating to the Fine Arts, students were afforded studio visitations such as the one with Brian Morger in Great Falls. Also, students are involved with a landscaping pro­ject for Winston with mentor, Junji Kuno. The photograph depicts two grade twelve students involved in a mentorship with surgeon Allen Traut­man. This picture is unique in that the intern assisting was Augustine Yip. (Grad. '86) 39 International Baccalaureate Program Churchill was excited and proud to offer for the first time this fall the International Bacca­laureate Program. This is a pre-university pro­gram designed to meet the needs of highly mot­ivated, academically talented students. This internationally recognized curriculum provides a thorough background in six core areas lead­ing to international exams: English, French, his­tory, mathematics, biology and chemistry. Students may choose a full or partial program. -• The grade 10 year is a prepatory year. Students must prove their academic ability and obtain teacher permission to continue. Jerry N. LeCrandeur: A 1968 graduate of Wins­ton Churchill, Jerry LeGrandeur has provided lea­dership to his community through his work as a practicing lawyer, a speaker and consultant on le­gal issues, a Judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta, a member of both the University of Leth­bridge Board of Governors and the Senate, and a judo official at the regional and national levels. Kevin H. Peterson: In the relatively short period since he delivered the valedictory address to the WCHS graduating class of 1983, Kevin Peterson has made important contributions to the computer industry. While undertaking graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Kevin combined his interests in computers and music in pursuing research on computer music at MIT's Media Laboratory. Kevin is presently a Senior Hard­ware Engineer with Digital Equipment Corporation in Palo Alto, California. Student’s Council has left its mark by acting as the driving force in generating school spirit and giving Churchill a new look. Activities like Fun day, dances, give-aways, contests, prizes and promotion of various school activities are just a few items that council was involved in. The 16 member of council relinquished countless hours to make posters, promote school activities, come out to cheer on teams and act as leaders in the school. Our quest was to make Churchill, and education, more exciting. Stimulating the student body and school and turning it into a frenzy when it came to promoting school pride! A new tradition has been established and we are confident that students in the future will continue to uphold and build on this tradition. No one can guarantee success in life, but only deserve it. Jodi Feist has a ball on the court. 26 THE ARTISTS TOUCH Art 10-20-30 are all involved with Studio work in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, jewelry crafting and the study of art and artists throughout history. Some specialized art work is completed by some students as special projects or as projects of special interest. The art year is culminated in June with students from both semesters participating in an annual city-wide art exhibition. The top art students are awarded with medals and special recognition at the annual MAD Banquet held in June. 28 Oil painting by Nga Diep, Cam Fischer makes his mark in oils, Michelle Guimond gets modern, Janis Myndio’s work in progress, Dawn Varga “palette-able”, Kim Dolan likes to stick around in the shop, Jolene Enn’s work in charcoal, Scott Pickles: “Eat your heart out Picasso!” 29 Select Choir and Sorriso Cantor There are two performing choral ensembles at WCHS. Sorriso Can­tor is Portugese for Happy Sing­ers. This is a female choir of 25 singers who compete and perform regularly. The Select Choir is a mixed chorus who have estab­lished themselves quickly and ag­gressively. The choirs hosted other choral students at an October workshop of 230 Lethbridge stu­dents. Our major Christmas work, the Magnificat by Charpentier fea­tured our own bass/baritone Gar­ret Sloan. The choirs have choral­fest in Calgary as well as local competition to look forward to. Concert Band/Stage Band The band program at WCHS has had an exciting and extremely busy year. In October our band hosted a workshop which saw 230 students from various schools in Lethbridge attend. The major event of 1990-91 is the selection of the Winston Churchill High School Band to represent Canada at the Pacific Basin Band Festi­val in Honolulu from March 24-31. This international event welcomes representative bands from Japan, Guam, Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, USA and Canada. Congratulations Chur­chill Band Students! Geoff Court pulls over Jodi Feist and arrests her for riding a horse on the highway. “Greg we’ve gone over this scene so many times. Why do we have to do it again?” It’s been ‘Done to Death’. This year saw Churchill put on two major Dramatic activities. In November the mystery comedy Done to Death was presented for four nights at the Stemdale Bennett Theatre. Some very enthusiastic audiences saw the cast of 21 present a play involving murder, mayhem and mistaken identity. In May, Churchill was involved in the High School Drama Festival. Schools from all over Southern Alberta present plays. One of those plays is chosen to go on to Provincials. Churchill has won the festival three of the last five years and again made a very strong presenta­tion. 32 33 Dale Becker as Teenage zombie. PA USE FOR MARKETING GOOD WILL Peer Support This humanitarian group operates on the premise of “kids helping kids”. They strive to improve the school climate by listening and helping students, mostly through informal mans. A new branch of peer support was implemented this year: Peer Tutor­ing. It has proven to be incredibly successful. Activities in 1991-92 included the candy-o-grams at Christmas and the delivery of carnations on Valentines Day. Both of these marketing schemes are aimed at boosting self-esteem. The peer support group hopes to participate in an inter-school workshop sponsored by AADAC and plans to continue building up the SADD program, which is still in the formative stage. The Habilitative Educational Program provides an opportunity for high school students with a mental disability to learn within the regular school programs. Some classes shared with non­handicapped peers include Phys. Ed, Clothing & Textiles, Food Science, Industrial Arts, and E.S.L. The goal of the program is for the students to develop daily liv­ing skills which will enhance their independence. Emphasis is placed on Business training, personal hygiene, oral communication, and socially appropriate behavior. Time and money skills are also developed. Where possible, pre-vocat

Churchill, not “Winston”, opened its doors to the public, in what is now Wilson Middle School, in September of 1960. The first principal, Reg Turner started the school on its long and very successful path. Over the years, staff at Churchill have developed the school’s enduring qualities. The school has always prided itself on being a student centred place. It was the first school in the province to develop continuous learning, a process by which students could proceed at their own rate to get through their classes. It was the first school where students called teachers by their first name- a symbol of the close relationships that have developed over the years between staff and students. i In 1989 Churchill was awarded the honour of becoming the first International Baccalaureate School in Southern Alberta. This program has enabled Churchill to become the strong academic school that it is today. Churchill has won many academic, sports, and fine acts awards over its many years. Although, what the school is most proud of is graduating productive individuals Who will make a strong contribution to society. People who graduate from Churchill feel a strong connection to the school. There are currently ten staff members working at Churchill who graduated from the building; two of whom are former Mr. Churchill’s. Good Luck to all you seniors in the future! We had a number of grade 10 and 11 players who stepped up into important roles and who will be looked to for strong leadership next season. Despite having a very young team the Bulldogs were able to pull off big wins against other Tier III teams such as Chinook and WR Myers. Our Bulldogs, Ian Mmbando, Chris Staples, Keaton Bosch and Randall Desjarlais finished with a bronze medal in team play and Ian Mmbando received a bronze medal for individual play with a score of 75! J®; 1 111 Fourteen athletes ran in Cross Country Zones in Medicine Hat. All our athletes ran a great race and we would like to highlight a few individuals who had exceptional performances: Leah Troskot finished first in the Junior Girls division, Will Clack finished first in the intermediate boys division, Ian Mmbando finished third in the junior boys division, and Devon Scriven-Williams finished eighth in the intermediate boys division. The JV boys competed very well all season and continued to improve throughout the year. The highlight of the season came in October when the boys competed in front of a packed house at our own Churchill Cup Volleyball tournament. We look forward to seeing this squad move to the senior ranks in the 2011-12 season. The Senior Bulldogs had a great season finishing first overall in the SAIAC volleyball league, a feat they had not accomplished in 23 years. The Bulldogs finished first in the Lethbridge College tournament and third both the Eagle Butte and Lord Beaverbrook invitational tournaments. The boys went on to represent Churchill very well throughout the league and zone playoffs losing a heart breaker in the zone semi-final to Cardston 26-24 and 28-26. The team peaked during zones playing their best game of the season against Eagle Butte. The team won their tournament at Sait in Calgary and also won the B final in Hanna and Claresholm. All of the teams from Grade 9 on through to Senior were very competitive. In playoffs the Grade 9 players attended Cities Doubles championships and Zone Qualifiers. All teams did veiy well. At all three High School Level categories in Cities the teams were competitive with many of the teams reaching the semi finals and three teams attending zone playoffs. The players worked and were rewarded for their efforts with fine play. The twelve curlers that made up WCHS curling team demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and skills. One mixed team, participated in the South Region Zone playdowns. The team was very competitive and played well during the two day bonspiel in Claresholm. -Jeff Davis 45 The 2011 Bulldog rugby squad, coming off an impressive 2010 League and Provincial Championship, are excited to get back to the Provincial tournament and attempt to make it a repeat. They realize that as a younger, less experienced team, they will have to bear down and work hard to get through the tough competition in the Southern Alberta High School Rugby League. Best of Luck to all of the players and coaches on their journey to a second straight championship!!! - Jonathan Dick 2011 will prove to be a tremendous year of growth for the Griffin Rugby Program as there are 30 returning players from last year. With this solid foundation, the Griffins are excited to progress through the process of becoming better teams in the extremely competitive Southern Alberta High School Rugby League. The Wales 2010 Tour was a fantastic experience and the student athletes are busy preparing to return to Europe in the Spring of 2013.
