The Evergreen and Gold is a permanent reminder of the days at the University of Alberta.
Alumni who show their “Year Book” to their children, and even grandchildren, try to recapture
the interests and to revive the memories of student days. The book becomes more valued as time
goes on.
Students whose pictures appear somewhere in the “Year Book” are daily creating the substance
which hides behind the form of the book. The substance is the complex of experiences in the
day-to-day activities on the campus. These experiences leave an indelible impression. Many of them
can be obtained without attending University. It is important that the impression made is the
mark of a University.
It may be that it is 1996, and you are thinking of the days 40 years ago when you were at
the University of Alberta. We hope your memories are happy ones, and that in the intervening
years you have found your experiences in 1956 have contributed to a satisfying and rewarding
life.
P.S. Have you been back to visit the University of Alberta lately?

From the sweaty dressing rooms of the gymnasium to the ivory tower recesses of the library stacks, student
life on the campus pulses with varying amounts of vitality. Somewhere through all this activity runs an intangible
thread of “campus spirit”.
This is the element we have tried to increase during the past year. The task has been tremendously challenging
but almost impossible to assess. For “spirit”, like “happiness”, often eludes the most ardent pursuit.
The interests and attention of the Students’ Council have ranged from Football Night and the social uses of
S.U.B. to such things as the Bookstore, the new Recreation Building, and a Russian Student Exchange. In all this
our motivation has been to benefit the student and to add to the value of his life at university.
Why this emphasis on campus spirit? What can “spirit” do for the average student? That spark of interest, that
touch of enthusiasm, that burst of energy which somehow result from this “spirit” can add enjoyment and results to
every activity, whether it be academic or social, athletic or cultural.
As you turn the pages of this book and reminisce over the delightful, sweet and sour memories of the past
year, add these words of Kipling to your thoughts:
“If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds worth of distance run,
Yours is the world, and everything that’s in it;
And, what is more, you’ll be a man my son.”

This yearbook has been produced by the work and
time spent by the people shown on these pages. We have
endeavored to make this book something which you can
look back on with pleasure in future years.
It is somewhat of a dynamic year for the Evergreen
and Gold. For the first time since the inception of the book
it is being done by the lithographic system of printing.
This switch from the older style was made in order to
produce a book on somewhat the same standards as some
of the better American yearbooks. The potentials of lithography
in a yearbook are almost unlimited and this year’s
book is only a start.
Changing to an entirely new system is a momentous
task and there will be many wrinkles to iron out and new
problems to face. Thanks to the hard work of our staff,
the personal help of Mr. Tom Comfort and Miss Shirley
Smith of Hamly Press, and the excellent co-operation of
Hamly Press, we feel that these difficulties will be surmounted
and one of the best yearbooks ever will be
produced.

Golden Key Society
The Golden Key Society is one of two honorary organizations on
the campus. Membership is granted to twelve students each year
in recognition of their distinguished service to the Students’
Union through participation in extra-curricular activities. Appointment
to Golden Key is one of the highest awards offered by
the Students’ Union and members may be recognized by their
distinctive blue blazers and gold crest, which are gifts of the
members of the Union.
The Golden Key Society, as a group of experienced students,
offers service to the Students’ Union by acting as the Freshman
Introduction Committee, organizing and running Frosh Week
each year. In addition, the Society produces during Varsity Guest
Week-end, the all-student talent show, Varsity Varieties, and acts
as official hosts of the Students’ Union to visitors to our University
Campus.

JIM EDWARDS, President Radio
Society
The University Radio Society has enjoyed an active and constructive
season. Under President Jim Edwards, Arts 3, an extensive
publicity campaign has resulted in a provincial network of seven
stations being set up. Early in the year news exchanges with the
other three Western campi were begun, using the facilities of the
Ham Radio Club.
Largely through the efforts of Chief Engineer Forbes Langstroth,
technical quality of the broadcasts was improved to top performance,
and the SUR console was rebuilt to perfect production. Production
Directors Art Newman and Marg Sutcliffe channeled news and
features from on and off campus into the provincial and intervarsity
networks.

Photography
Directorate
Membership in the Photodirectorate is composed of a few
students whose interest in photography finds some gratification
in seeing manifestations of their work in the yearbook and the
campus newspaper.
♦
Martin Dzidrums has had commercial photographic experience
with one of Edmonton’s leading photographers. Having
been a photographer at Regina College qualified Eugene Chou.
Jamie MacKeage has had experience with camera clubs in Halifax
and Kingston. Albert Munz took a short course in photography
at the Banff School of Fine Arts. Completing our staff we
have John Hillerud and Leroy Long.
It has been necessary for the Director to give a series
of lectures and demonstrations in order to have available in
September a staff capable of handling a camera. Leroy Long, Al
Munz and Jamie MacKeage were among those who attended the
course last winter.
I wish, in conclusion, to thank the photographers who have
worked for and with me during this term and who have devoted
much time and effort to producing better pictures and photographs
for the Gateway and the Evergreen and Gold.

Public
Relations
The Public Relations Committee is one of the most active
* organizations on the campus. This year, under the leadership
of Doug Burns, assisted by Gary Campbell, Dick Anthony and
a number of co-eds, the Public Relations Committee has
reached a new high in university-to-public relationship.
In the past year Varsity Football Night, the Civic
Banquet, Parliamentary Dinner, and Varsity Guest Weekend
were planned and executed by this committee in very commendable
fashion.

HAROLD COWARD
Director
1; Dick K, wong„ , CGoorrda Stangier,
At the commencement of every full term activities
must be started. Organizing means contacting people,
and without a phone book our students’ council, clubs
and various committees would be at a standstill. This
year Harold Coward, together with his hard-working
committee, has risen admirably to the challenge of
publishing a phone book; thus facilitating every
aspect of campus life, from the week-end date to the
machinery of campus business.
Hats off to the Telephone Directorate!
