This year's FUNdraiser was held early in the school year. The theme for the week was TIGER.
TALENT and, boy, does our school have some! Students were invited to participate in the
daily assemblies and share their talents in front of the entire student body. A large number
of students took part and demonstrated talents such as singing, dancing, performing magic
tricks and beat boxing. All of the acts were excellent and enjoyed by everyone. When
week was over, not only had we achieved our fundraising goal, we had achieved
even more valuable - a common sense of appreciation for everyone at GPMS.

Turkey TTrroott and the Feed the Pug food drIivvee.. PPootthh ooff these eevveennttss typically ttaakkee place tthhee
week before the Thanksgiving long weekend and give students an opportunity to show off their
creativity and community spirit.
The Turkey Trot has students "trotting" around the school in a race against the clock. In order
to be declared the winners student must complete the race as close to their estimated time as
possible. Pesides the glory of the win, there is also a prize up for grabs - a frozen turkey! Who
wouldn't want to take that home for Thanksgiving?
The second event, Feed the Pug, is a food drive contest between GPMS and other district
schools. This worthwhile event has students bringing in donations of non-perishable food items
to benefit the Lethbridge Food Panks. This year, as in years past, the students of GPMS
showed their TIGER PRIPE with a donation of more than 1100 pounds of food! And, as if that
wasn't successful enough, the donations were increased through a community initiative which
brought the total donation to more than 5000 pounds. GPMS would like to thank PAVIS Pontiac
GMC for providing the vehicles used in this event.:
Midway through the 2010-2011 school year, the GPMS counselling staff held a contest to raise awareness about the negative consequences of drug and alcohol use. Students were invited to submit entries of posters, videos, poems and essays. The response was overwhelming, both in the number of entries and in the quality of the work. Ultimately, the music video of a song written and performed by Shafa Madizi was declared the best of the best. Congratulations to all who entered.—

I Early to Z011, students at GPMS gathered together to say farewell to the members of the
construction crew. These people had been working in our building for more than two years and
I had become members of the TIGER, family. Thanks to all who worked to make our building
I beautiful!
I PINK SHIRT PAY was created when two students in Nova Scotia began a movement to support a
student who had been teased for wearing a pink shirt. This support spread across North America
and now students wear pink shirts to signal their commitment to end bullying at school. It's
amazing what can happen when kids take action!

celebrate this, Gilbert Paterson held a multicultural week. A survey was conducted to
identify the different countries represented in our school with each being pin-pointed on a
huge map of the world. Other activites for the week included door decorating and a cultural
talent show.

Quickly adjusting to an almost fully online teaching environment for the Fall 2020 term certainly was challenging. But we did manage to sort out a variety of new issues together, including some that had copyright aspects, and Spring 2021 is now safely underway as well. Those feel like major collaborative accomplishments that are worth taking a moment to savour, especially as many of us have not set foot in an on-campus classroom for almost one year!
Here are a couple of quick updates on other developments from the copyright front over the past several months.
Access Copyright v. York University
In October 2020 the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) granted leave to both parties to appeal the April 2020 Federal Court of Appeal (FCA) decision. (For more on the latter decision, see the May/June 2020 column.) We await a hearing date for this case. If you are interested in the parties’ arguments, you may wish to peruse their SCC filings. Briefly, York takes the position that the FCA erred in ruling that York’s fair dealing guidelines are not fair. For its part, AC would like the SCC to overturn the FCA ruling against the proposition that it is mandatory for institutions to become licensees under a Copyright Board-certified tariff.
You may recall this an ongoing saga that began in April 2013 when Access Copyright (AC), Canada’s largest literary works collective, sued York University alleging that York’s fair dealing guidelines “authorize and encourage copying that is not supported by the law.” All of Canada’s educational institutions from K to 12 schools to universities have an eye on this lawsuit, as most (including the U of L) have adopted very similar guidelines.
Learning About Copyright
The Copyright website offers a tutorial series, Copyright Q & As, on copyright law and its underpinnings, as well as slides and handouts used in past copyright Brown Bag sessions offered to the U of L community. In addition, a set of seven copyright tutorials was added to the website this month. Developed by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), this new series was created specifically with university faculty and staff in mind.
Each CARL tutorial is short (between 3 and 6 minutes) and is available in English and French. I highly recommend these tutorials for members who would like a short refresher on some copyright basics. Those of us who teach may find Module 3 (When do I need to think about copyright?) and Module 6 (When do I need to know about licensing?) to be particularly useful.

TO THE STUDENTS OF 1967-68:
History will name this age - "The Age of Protest". Every day
we read or hear of some group of people staging a "protest march".
Some of these marches are staged to protest the war in Viet Nam -
many merely to protest almost anything. Some end in a riot, creating
civil strife in their own locality, city, state, or country.
In spite of this unrest, there has never been a more favourable
time in Canada for young Canadians to make their future more secure,
more successful, and more meaningful. Greater opportunities and
more educational facilities are found than ever before.
As you work toward your future goal, remember a few principles
which are becoming more apparent. It is imperative that people must
live and work together if they are going to live at all. Perhaps
the most difficult lesson of all to learn is that throughout the
long journey down the years human progress travels on the feet of
the slowest,'not the fastest. Experience has shown that nothing in
a democracy is strong if character is weak, and nothing in a democracy
is weak if character is strong. Emerson said - "It is one of the
most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try
to help another without helping himself."
You must decide for yourself this question: To which group will
I belong?
There are those who make things happen,
Others who watch things happen,
And those who don’t know anything happened!
When you have decidi 1 ’what you want’ you have to do something to
make it erne - it will not come as a natural course. To succeed you
must have certain aspirations, and you must work to accomplish these.
Fulfilment of your desires will not come through demonstrating in mobs.
It will come through your personal effort in solving the problems
which you meet. You must make some satisfactory adjustment within
yourself between that which you wish to attain and the price you are
willing to pay to accomplish this goal. Although traffic in our world
today is increasing, I am sure that on your road to success you will
not encounter any traffic jam in your ’extra mile’.
The kind of world you live in tomorrow depends, not partially, but
entirely, upon the type and quality of education that you get today!

O NPRESIDENTS MESSAGE
The year has passed quickly, and for all students, the work continues to come. During this busy year, the students’ council has attempted to do what seemed best to improve the activities.
For the grade 9’s, three dances were held. The Valentine’s Dance, to which other public schools were invited, was the most successful. An entertaining band was hired and a new program for the prom was worked and most effectively carried out. ,
For grades seven and eight, new types of parties were organized by their executive and council members. Judging by their work, the future of the Students’ Council in forthcoming years looks very bright. The students should profit from their enthusiasm, experience, and high capabilities should they decide to expand their role in student government in the years to come.
For the school as a whole, such new projects as cheerleader uniforms and a students’ activity board were started and completed, along with projects passed on to us from other years. New policies were adopted for following councils, which I hope will be continually carried out. They promoted the true spirit of our school.
On behalf of all students, I thank the members of the staff for their help in the supervision and organization of school activities.
I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as your president this year. It was an enriching experience which I will never forget. May I extend many thanks and lasting good wishes to those conducting the business of the Students* Union next year.
