Other Childhoods and Adolescences in Maghrebi Literature: The Construction of Homosexual IdentityiIn the Works of Abdellah Taï

No full text
Abdellah Taïa is one of the greatest exponents of the current Maghrebi novel of French expression, with a series of autobiographical stories in which he narrates the evolution of his homosexual identity. The present paper explores and compares different models of coming-of-age storytelling in contemporary Maghrebi literature, which may have influenced Taïa in his works: Mon Maroc (2000) and Une mélancolie arabe (2008). With the aim of observing the evolution of the Bil- dungsroman model in this literature, two tales of childhood and adolescence have been selected from Moroccan literature in Arabic: Fī-l-ṭufūla (In Childhood) by Abdelmayid Benjelloun ([1954] 1992), and al-Jubz al-ḥāfī (For Bread Alone) by Mohamed Choukri ([1982] 1993). These referents show stories of learning that start from the heteronormative autobiographical literary canon of modern Arab literature and evolve to relate other types of childhood and adolescence, which are part of the social reality of the Maghreb. This comparative analysis follows a threefold approach based on: family and affective-sexual relationships; cultural references as models of sociocultural gender identity; and the construction of the homosexual identity expressed in the literary idiolect of Taïa through implicit and explicit discourses, according to the vital time evoked in the plot.173153200,086,5ERIH PLU

Effective complete replacement of fish oil by linseed oil in diets for thick-lipped grey mullet (Chelon labrosus) juveniles reared at three environmental salinities

No full text
One of the major challenges for fish oil replacement by alternative oils is the limited capacity of marine fish species to convert 18C fatty acids into long-chain poly unsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA). Since salinity markedly affects this conversion capacity, euryhaline species, such as thick-lipped grey mullet (Chelon labrosus), may have a good potential to use diets without inclusion of fish oil. To test this hypothesis, thick-lipped grey mullet juveniles were fed two different diets based on fish oil (FO diet) or linseed oil (LO diet) at three different salinities: 46 ppt, 35 ppt, and 16 ppt. At the end of the trial, the biochemical and fatty acid composition of whole-body, liver, and muscle, as well as the relative expression of the genes codifying for the elongase Elovl5 and the desaturase Fads2 in liver, were determined. The results showed the good capacity of mullet juveniles to convert 18C fatty acids into LC-PUFA, which was enhanced by the replacement of FO by LO and the reduction of salinity to an isosmotic level (16 ppt). Besides, these juveniles efficiently used diets with complete replacement of FO by LO with growth performance, body composition, and LC-PUFA fatty acid profiles similar to those of fish fed FO, particularly when reared at 16 ppt.151,0594,5Q1Q1SCI

High-performance work systems in job demands-resources theory: Implications for employee burnout and quality of life

No full text
Building on recent developments in job demands-resources (JD-R) theory, we investigate how high-performance work systems (HPWS) are related to both the motivational and health impairment processes. Concretely, we examine the relationship between HPWS and employees’ burnout and quality of life (QoL) through its link with challenge and hindrance job demands. To do so, 417 hospitality and tourism employees (i.e. hotels, restaurants, and car rental offices) were surveyed, and their responses were analyzed using PLS-SEM. The results showed that HPWS were negatively associated with employee burnout, both directly and indirectly, through the reduction of challenge and hindrance job demands. In addition, the results showed that there is a positive relationship between HPWS and employee QoL. A negative association between burnout and QoL was observed, but the expected relationship between challenge job demands and QoL was not empirically confirmed. We discuss how these findings contribute to JD-R theory and practice.122,92310,0Q1Q1SSCI11,0ERIH PLU

Social denouncement and corruption in the work of the Frenchified Manuel José Centeno (1821)

The Frenchified clergy in 1808 backed the Bonaparte monarchy, hoping for changes in the rigid structures of the Ancient Regime in Spain. The reformism of the French Enlightenment was the hope placed in the new Josephine dynasty, especially in the economic, social and political order of the country. The aim of this paper is to analyze Manuel José Centeno’s Memoria sobre los expósitos, in which we will try to detect the allegations of corruption in the charitable institutions. This group of clergymen supported the enlightened reforms and the humanization of the care of foundlings and orphans in the institutions where they were admitted. The care and safety of unmarried mothers was another of the concerns expressed in the work, above all to prevent clandestine abortions and infanticide, which were so common at the time.1861652

Is the endemic Phoenix canariensis H. Wildpret an orthodox species? Implications for its conservation

No full text
Seed banks (gene banks) have become essential for the conservation of genetic biodiversity in natural ecosystems. Seed preservation is especially important for threatened species, since seeds are the primary genetic material used to reintroduce plant species. Knowledge of the desiccation tolerance of each species is relevant for selecting the best method for ex situ conservation, but it is not always available. Currently, the categorisation of the seed storage behaviour of the Phoenix species as orthodox, recalcitrant or intermediate, remains uncertain. This study uses four accessions of the endemic species from Canary Island Phoenix canariensis H. Wildpret, with storage times ranging between 2 and 28 years. Germination tests were carried out to measure seed viability over time, desiccation tolerance and the possible impact of seed storage on viability. The germination results differed for seeds after 192 days in a greenhouse. Accessions stored in the seed bank at -20 degrees C and 15%RH for 17 years showed a high germination percentage (72%). In contrast, accessions stored under unsuitable conditions showed a 0% germination. These results indicate the orthodox seed storage behaviour of P. canariensis. In addition, it supports the good state of conservation of the material stored in the Seed Bank of the Botanical Garden Viera y Clavijo and the reliability of the temperature and humidity conditions in which the seeds of P. canariensis have been stored. In addition, the results are relevant in order to manage the conservation of this endemic species from the Canary Islands.9190,3390,9Q3Q4SCIE11,

Evidential English adverbials and their French equivalents in a specialised parallel corpus

No full text
This research paper investigates the translation procedures applied to English evidentialadverbials within a parallel corpus of specialized technical information in English and French aimedat popularisation. We analyse the strategies deployed by translators to ensure a natural reading inthe target language, taking into consideration variation in metadiscourse functions. Corpus linguisticsmethods are used to analyse adverbial positioning, morphological characteristics, metadiscoursefunctions, and translation strategies. Our anticipated conclusions highlight the manifold functions ofevidential adverbials, from enhancing meaning to conveying the author's attitude, often influencedby cultural and professional factors, resulting in variable translation strategies. Keywords: parallel corpus, translation procedures, evidentiality, boosters, hedging.231230,202Q1ESCI9,
