Financial restructuring, crisis, and productivity growth in bank branches: evidence from a large commercial Spanish bank

    No full text
We analyse the impact of financial restructuring and economic crises on the evolution of productivity growth within bank branches. We apply the DEA-Malmquist framework for this analysis, utilizing both production and profit approaches. The study is based on data derived from the annual balance sheets of a major Spanish commercial bank for 2011–2014, encompassing the bailout of the Spanish banking system and the second economic downturn in Spain. The key findings are as follows: Firstly, despite severe adjustments and challenging economic conditions, branch productivity exhibited growth across the entire sample period. Secondly, productivity changes were predominantly driven by technological advancements rather than efficiency improvements, underscoring the bank’s notable role in fostering innovation during this time. Thirdly, a decline in the rate of productivity growth and its components was observed, along with an increased number of branches reporting negative changes, particularly among non-super-efficient branches.230,475Q

Flexible hybrid edge computing IoT architecture for low-cost bird songs detection system

    No full text
The monitoring of bird populations provides valuable insights into biodiversity variations and their correlation with environmental changes. This study proposes a flexible hybrid edge computing IoT architecture for a low-cost bird song detection system. The system integrates low-power microcomputers, such as Raspberry Pi, equipped with USB microphones, LoRa modules, and Wi-Fi for seamless operation across rural and urban environments. By utilizing deep learning techniques, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained on bird song datasets, the system performs real-time species detection at the edge, minimizing the need for high-bandwidth transmission. Nodes dynamically select communication technologies based on availability, sending data to an IoT analytics platform. Field deployments demonstrate the system's efficiency, interoperability, and adaptability for biodiversity monitoring, particularly in remote areas with limited connectivity. This architecture addresses the challenges of real-time species detection while ensuring low cost, scalability, and energy efficiency. The main advantage is that devices can operate in areas without mobile coverage, as they only transmit the detection signal. This results in significant bandwidth savings, since the processing is carried out at the edge.1,1015,9Q1Q1SCIE10,

Ion-beam plasma interaction in ion fast ignition nuclear fusion scheme: A systematic study of the hot-spot properties and gains

    No full text
Ion fast ignition by laser-driven ion beams is an interesting approach within the inertial confinement fusion scheme to achieve nuclear fusion. In the ion fast ignition, once the precompression of the target is finished, a sphere of fully ionized deuterium-tritium (DT) is obtained. In this work, we have investigated the following stages: heating of the DT sphere by a monoenergetic ion beam and the preliminary evolution of the plasma. To this end, we have carried out a systematic numerical study in terms of the beam parameters (ion fluence and projectile energy), the temperature fields obtained in the plasma, the self-heating, ignition and burning gains, as well as the characteristic lengths and temperatures of the heated plasma and the hot spots generated during the beam-plasma interaction, considering three beams of ions with different charges (p+,C6+, and V23+). This study allows us to determine the beam parameter space in which hot spots are generated and ignition is achieved. In addition, we have also studied the effect of the plasma corona surrounding the core and the presence of impurities in the plasma on the parameters mentioned above. Since in both cases the slowing down of the ion beam is increased with respect to the pure DT ideal core, the beam parameter space is shifted toward higher values of the ion fluence and projectile energy.230,8052,2Q1Q1SCI

Adolescent exposure to benzophenone ultraviolet filters: cross-sectional associations with obesity, cardiometabolic biomarkers, and asthma/allergy in six European biomonitoring studies

    No full text
Background: Exposure to benzophenone-1 (BP-1) and benzophenone-3 (BP-3), widely used as UV filters in personal care products, has been associated with adverse health effects. However, epidemiological evidence is limited and inconclusive, particularly in vulnerable populations such as teenagers. Objective: To examine the relation between BP-1 and BP-3 concentrations and obesity, cardiometabolic biomarkers, and asthma/allergy outcomes in European teenagers, including possible sex-specific associations. Methods: A multi-country cross-sectional study was conducted using pooled data from six aligned studies from the Human Biomonitoring for Europe Initiative (HBM4EU). Sociodemographic data, cardiometabolic biomarkers, and asthma/allergy outcomes were collected through questionnaires. Anthropometric data and BMI z-scores were calculated (n = 1339). Plasma/serum cardiometabolic biomarkers and asthma/allergy outcomes were available for a subsample (n = 173–594). Urinary BP-1 and BP-3 concentrations were adjusted for creatinine dilution using the traditional standardization (trad.) and the covariate-adjusted creatinine standardization (CAS) method. Generalized additive models, linear, logistic, and multinomial mixed models were applied, and sex-interaction terms were tested. Results: Each natural log-unit increase in urinary BP-3 (CAS) concentrations was associated with higher odds of obesity in the whole population (OR: 1.20; 95%CI: 1.04-1.38). Sex-specific associations were also found with BP-1 (CAS) and BP-3 (CAS) concentrations, which were associated with higher odds of obesity in male teenagers (OR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.01-1.55; OR: 1.34; 95%CI: 1.09-1.65, respectively). Linear mixed models showed consistent findings toward higher BMI z-scores. A negative association was found between BP-1 (CAS) concentration and serum adiponectin levels in females (% change per loge-unit increase: -3.73, 95%CI: -7.32, -0.10). BP-3 (CAS) concentrations were also associated with higher odds of non-food allergies in males (OR: 1.27; 95%CI: 1.00-1.63). Traditional creatinine adjustment showed similar or slightly attenuated estimates compared to the CAS method. Conclusions: BP-1 and BP-3 exposure was cross-sectionally associated with higher odds of obesity in European male teenagers, highlighting the need to update regulations and keep exposure levels as low as practically achievable. Longitudinal studies are needed to confirm these findings.1,6797,7Q1Q1SCI

Transfer Learning from Simulated to Real Scenes for Monocular 3D Object Detection

    No full text
Accurately detecting 3D objects from monocular images in dynamic roadside scenarios remains a challenging problem due to varying camera perspectives and unpredictable scene conditions. This paper introduces a two-stage training strategy to address these challenges. Our approach initially trains a model on the large-scale synthetic dataset, RoadSense3D, which offers a diverse range of scenarios for robust feature learning. Subsequently, we fine-tune the model on a combination of real-world datasets to enhance its adaptability to practical conditions. Experimental results of the Cube R-CNN model on challenging public benchmarks show a remarkable improvement in detection performance, with a mean average precision rising from 0.26 to 12.76 on the TUM Traffic A9 Highway dataset and from 2.09 to 6.60 on the DAIR-V2X-I dataset, when performing transfer learning.
