Longitudinal assessment of measured and estimated glomerular filtration-rate in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: Real practice experience
Equations for estimation glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) have been associated with poor clinical performance and their clinical accuracy and reliability have been called into question. AIM To assess the longitudinal changes in measured glomerular filtration rate (mGFR) in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). METHODS Analysis of an ambispective data base conducted on consecutive patients diagnosed with ADPKD. The mGFR was assessed by iohexol clearance; while eGFR was calculated by three different formulas: (1) The chronic kidney disease epidemiology collaboration (CKD-EPI); (2) Modification of diet in renal disease (MDRD); and (3) The 24-hour urine creatinine clearance (CrCl). The primary end-points were the mean change in mGFR between the baseline and final visit, as well as the comparison of the mean change in mGFR with the change estimated by the different formulas. RESULTS Thirty-seven patients were included in the study. As compared to baseline, month-6 mGFR was significantly decrease by-4.4 mL/minute ± 10.3 mL/minute (P = 0.0132). However, the CKD-EPI, MDRD, and CrCl formulas underestimated this change by 48.3%, 89.0%, and 45.8% respectively, though none of these differences reached statistical significance (P = 0.3647; P = 0.0505; and P = 0.736, respectively). The discrepancies between measured and estimated glomerular filtration rate values, as evaluated by CKD-EPI (r = 0.29, P = 0.086); MDRD (r = 0.19, P = 0.272); and CrCl (r = 0.09, P = 0.683), were not correlated with baseline mGFR values. CONCLUSION This study indicated that eGFR inaccurately reflects the decline in mGFR and cannot reliably track changes over time. Magnetic-based microextraction systems for the determination of emerging contaminants in environmental liquid samples
The development of novel methodologies for the extraction of emerging contaminants (ECs) based on functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) has increased over the past decade. The properties of these materials permit rapid and efficient separation of the adsorbents and/or solvents used as extractants by the application of a magnetic field, avoiding the use of time-consuming and expensive processes. Due to their high surface areas, ease of modification with different materials, and integration with conventional solid-phase extraction systems, such nanoadsorbents are candidates for developing efficient microextraction methods. Furthermore, they can be easily automated and aligned with green chemistry principles, reducing the environmental impact generated in the synthesis of the nanoparticles and their subsequent application. Bridging attitudes and evidence: climate change perspectives in Italy
The most visible and well-known consequence of natural and environmental disasters is displacement. The paper analyzes environmentally induced displacement and attitudes towards climate change in Italy between 2013 and 2023. For this purpose, the Gradient Boosting Model (GBM) is used to analyze environmental displacement, while the Fuzzy-Hybrid TOPSIS is implemented to study climate change concerns. The results show that weather-related disasters are the most important casual climate effect on displacement. Furthermore, the issue of climate change is far from uniform and varies significantly across socio-economic factors such as age, education, religion, and income.1
Feasibility study of hyperspectral colposcopy as a novel tool for detecting precancerous cervical lesions
Cervical cancer remains a major global health concern, with a specially alarming incidence in younger women. Traditional detection techniques such as the Pap smear and colposcopy often lack sensitivity and specificity and are highly dependent on the experience of the gynaecologist. In response, this study proposes the use of Hyperspectral Imaging, a pioneering technology that combines traditional imaging with spectroscopy to provide detailed spatial and spectral information. Over a period of six-months, our custom-designed hyperspectral colposcope was used on 62 patients. The gathered data underwent a specialized preprocessing workflow using a PCA-based strategy for unsupervised segmentation of the cervical region. This process extracted spectral signatures from various tissue types, and our subsequent statistical analysis highlighted its ability to detect differences and alterations in the cervical tissue. la situación de neutralidad española en la Gran Guerra, incidiendo en el impacto que la guerra
subacuática germana tuvo para los gobiernos de Madrid. La revisión de la prensa canaria del periodo
y el análisis de documentación diplomática de archivo han sido las fuentes primarias utilizadas para
este trabajo y ayudan a dibujar la importancia de Canarias para las potencias beligerantes y el interés
isleño por el trascurrir bélico.The article studies the case of the German sailing ship Pamir, which took refuge off the Canary Islands
coast in the context of the First World War, in relation to the possible support provided to German
submarines operating in the area. The analysis of this case allows us to analyse at the same time the
Spanish neutrality during the Great War, with an emphasis on the impact that the German submarine
war had on the governments in Madrid. The review of the Canarian press of the period and the analysis of archival diplomatic documentation were the primary sources used for this work, and they
help to draw the Canary Islands‘ importance for the belligerent powers and the islanders’ interest in

Optimizing Muscle Performance in Young Soccer Players: Exploring the Impact of Resisted Sprint Training and Its Relationship with Distance Covered
Background: Speed training with resisted sprints has been shown to positively affect neuromuscular performance in soccer players. Various loads, ranging from 10% to 120% of body mass, have demonstrated performance improvements across the spectrum. However, the impact of sprint distance with optimal load on these adaptive responses has yet to be thoroughly described. Objective. To analyze the influence of sprint distance in resisted sprints on muscle performance in young soccer players. Methods. This quantitative study utilized a pre-post experimental design. The sample consisted of 24 young soccer players (15.3 ± 0.68 years; 61.4 ± 7.08 kg; 1.60 ± 0.06 m) randomized into three groups (10, 20, and 30 m) and subjected to 12 sessions of resisted sprint training over six weeks. The volume was homogenized across groups, with a total distance of 120 m for each. The intervention’s effect was analyzed through performance in the isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP), countermovement jump (CMJ), modified 505 agility test (505 m), and linear sprint tests. Differences were analyzed using a mixed ANOVA, incorporating a between-subjects factor (training group) and a within-subjects factor (pre- and post-intervention). Results. Time-dependent differences were observed in all groups for peak force (PF) (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.62), time to PF (TPF) (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.53), impulse at 50 (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.57), 100 (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.60), and 200 ms (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.67) in IMTP; jump height by impulse-momentum (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.64), rate of force development (p = 0.04; η2p = 0.14), yielding impulse (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.49), and concentric impulse (p = 0.01; η2p = 0.19) in CMJ; time (p < 0.001; η2p = 0.46) in 505 m; and average speed in linear sprint (p = 0.003; η2p = 0.36), with moderate to large effect sizes, regardless of the distance covered. No differences were observed for the interaction between the time* and group or between groups. Conclusion. Performance improvements were independent of the sprint distance, with no differences between training groups.
