Artificial Intelligence in Justice. Challenges and Opportunities in Judicial Decision-making
In recent decades artificial intelligence has revolutionised the field of law, allowing it to be used to analyse case law and predict court decisions. The ‘social heroes’ approach as a methodology for valorising the primary sector and promoting local products. A pilot study in Lanzarote, Canary Islands
During a gastronomy workshop at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), marking the inauguration of the ‘HUB GastroFood ULPGC’, Mr. Andoni Luis Aduriz (of Mugaritz restaurant) shared with us that the “social heroes” approach is the most viable strategy to promote and strengthen the use of local products in regional gastronomy. Thank you, Andoni.
We extend our gratitude to all the “social voices”, participants, and collaborators in this project. Special thanks to Iván Monreal, who was responsible for the wine pairings and characterization, and to Lía González Valderas, who handled the photographic work. The photographs that illustrate this article were taken by her. We also express our sincere appreciation to the Tías Town Hall, particularly the mayor and the council members who supported the initiative.Cuisine and folklore are among the most ancient and deeply rooted cultural expressions of humanity. Sustainable and intelligent gastronomy, especially in times of crisis, serves as a driving force, creating a ripple effect that influences other socio-cultural and socio-economic sectors of a region. It brings numerous social and economic benefits, notably improving citizens' health and well-being while reinforcing territorial culture and food sovereignty. A recent pilot study conducted by the authors in Lanzarote (Canary Islands) during 2021-2022 explored the preservation of the island's intangible food heritage through innovative approaches. One aspect involved interviews with primary producers (including those in agriculture, livestock, and fishing) and restaurateurs and chefs who prioritize local products. A second approach focused on culinary traditions passed down through generations: (i) home cooking rooted in popular wisdom, (ii) culinary practices aboard artisanal fishing boats, and (iii) offerings from traditional restaurants. A third innovative element was the development of a seasonal calendar of local products to inform consumers and encourage the prioritization of fresh, local ingredients. Special attention was given to the role of participants as "social heroes", contributing to the preservation of their region's rich cultural heritage -both land and sea- and ultimately supporting the conservation of natural resources. These elements are understood as key to collective prosperity and sustainability, grounded in participants' responsibility and commitment to their actions. The initial hypothesis suggesting that the 'social heroes' approach in the Canary Islands might function as a valid methodology for valorising the primary sector and promoting local products is confirmed.110,623,2Q1Q2ESCI8,
One of the key aspects to consider when evaluating the effectiveness of evidence-based parenting education programmes is the role of the facilitator in the implementation process and the achievement of objectives. This article examines the importance of the facilitator’s role in the effectiveness of the “Living Adolescence in the Family” programme, adapted to the educational context, implemented in centres of Obligatory Secondary Education in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. The research involved 372 mothers of adolescent students participating in the programme, with an average age of 42,52 years. The study measured the impact of facilitator characteristics on the changes the programme produced in parenting competencies, positive strategies for resolving family conflicts, social and family climate, and parental supervision. Given that the facilitators started with the same training for programme implementation, the results indicate that facilitator satisfaction with the programme is the variable that most significantly impacts the improvement of parenting competencies. Additionally, less teaching experience had a positive effect on improving family relationships. Finally, regarding the implementation process, having a single facilitator deliver the programme influenced both parenting competencies and the use of positive conflict resolution strategies. As evidenced, the programme’s effectiveness depends not only on its content but also on the quality of its implementation. Facilitator satisfaction, along with appropriate training and support, promotes tangible improvements in participants’ parenting roles. It is also essential to consider the facilitators’ profile, including their teaching experience, and the organisational aspects of the programme to ensure its maximum effectiveness.
Shallow hydrothermal fluids shape microbial dynamics at the Tagoro submarine volcano (Canary Islands, Spain)
Shallow underwater hydrothermal systems are often overlooked despite their potential contribution to marine diversity and biogeochemistry. Over a decade after its eruption, the Tagoro submarine volcano continues to emit heat, reduced compounds, and nutrients into shallow waters, serving as a model system for studying the effects of diffuse hydrothermal fluids on surface microbial communities. The impact on both phytoplankton and bacterial communities was examined through experimental manipulations mimicking dilution levels up to ~100 m from the primary crater of Tagoro. Chlorophyll a concentration doubled in the presence of hydrothermal products, with peak levels detected about a day earlier than in controls. Picoeukaryotes and Synechococcus cell abundances moderately increased, yet small eukaryotic phytoplankton (≤ 5 μm) predominated in the hydrothermally enriched bottles. Dinoflagellates, diatoms, small green algae and radiolarians particularly benefited from the hydrothermal inputs, along with phototrophic and chemoautotrophic bacteria. Our results indicate that hydrothermal products in shallow waters enhance primary production driven by phototrophic microbes, potentially triggering a secondary response associated with increased organic matter availability. Additionally, protistan grazing and parasitism emerged as key factors modulating local planktonic communities. Our findings highlight the role of shallow submarine hydrothermal systems in enhancing local primary production and element cycling.181,3424,3Q1Q2SCIE10,
Geopolitical and competition analysis: The case of Western African ports and the port of Las Palmas in the mid-Atlantic European Islands
This article examines the factors shaping the competitiveness of container shipping in the Western African port region, focusing on the Port of Las Palmas (LPAP). Serving as a case study of an island region, the research identifies strategies to enhance the port's competitive position by analyzing insights from regional agents and enterprises. Using Porter's extended diamond model and two analytical approaches—Traditional and Weighted—this study highlights the critical influence of the European Union (EU) and other supranational entities on competitive (dis)advantages, particularly in manufacturing, where environmental regulations challenge shipping operations. While external competition benefits road transport and storage facilities, it constrains value-added services. Infrastructure development shows mixed results, with port authority governance emerging as a major limitation due to spatial constraints for business expansion. Key policy recommendations include incentivizing green technology adoption and EU regulatory compliance, fostering public-private partnerships to enhance governance and attract investment, and diversifying operations with value-added services, such as manufacturing and efficient customs processes. Strengthening regional integration through collaboration between West African ports and the Canary Islands, aligned with EU and ECOWAS policies, alongside improving port-to-land transportation links, is essential for enhancing the LPAP's competitiveness.141,7915,7Q1Q1SSCI10,
