Notes on the Latin American Conceptual Construction of Urban Fragmentation. A Focus on the Tourism Vector

    No full text
Metropolitan areas reflect processes of increasing social inequalities, with tourism activities being among those that generate such urban transformations. This article aims to traverse the scientific production on the issue of urban fragmentation, with the dual objective of both reflecting on the theoretical construction of this concept from Latin America and the possible application of this theoretical framework in other urban and metropolitan areas transformed by intensive tourism activities. Drawing from a corpus of reference publications on Latin American metropolises, a discursive and hermeneutic analysis is applied in combination with a comparative approach. First, the emergence of empirical studies and, to a lesser extent, theoretical studies on urban fragmentation is highlighted in urban and metropolitan areas which have been historically marked by particularly significant social fractures. Second, the emergence of transformations linked to tourism activities, in different case studies, reveals forms of urban fragmentation and enables innovative approaches to its study. Finally, the discussion revolves around how this theoretical apparatus of urban fragmentation could be both understood in a holistic manner by considering the social, urban, and political trialectics, and applied to the analysis of urban transformation processes which are influenced by recent tourism phenomena.2

The botanist Blanca Catalán de Ocón y Gayolá (1860-1904) lived her youth surrounded by the beauty of nature, scientific knowledge and the good taste for arts and poetry that in every corner of her home situated in an immense valley in the heart of the Sierra de Albarracín. She composed an herbarium with more than eighty species, some of them still unknown to science. However, Nature was much more than an element to be scientifically analysed and became a source of artistic inspiration, manifested in poems and floral designs. In this paper, we explore her herbarium and her private archive, and we reflect on the practices that linked art with botany as a strategy to create alternative spaces for scientific discussion.2952752

Ensemble methods for bankruptcy resolution prediction: a new approach

    No full text
When a company goes bankrupt, it generates an extremely important uncertainty for all stakeholders as to whether the company will be reorganized or liquidated. This study aims to provide a successful methodology to predict whether a bankrupt SME will reorganize or liquidate. This could prevent significant economic and social losses and would contribute to reduce the number of SMEs that are helped to reorganize when they have little chance of success or that are liquidated when they could be viable. This useful and valid methodology applies algorithms (e.g., k-nearest neighbors) and techniques of ensemble learning and performance evaluation algorithms for the first time, considering the reviewed literature. By applying this methodology, it is possible to achieve a performance far superior to that known in the literature, specifically with an average accuracy of 94 percent using a data set with only financial variables of 1683 Spanish SMEs in the period 2011–2019360,4981,9Q2Q2SCIESSCI11,

Prediction of tourism zombie companies using artificial intelligence algorithms and accounting data

    No full text
This paper addresses the problem of the prediction of zombie companies. Despite their relevance, financial issues represent an area scarcely considered in relation to the tourism industry and this topic has so far remained totally unexplored. Zombie firms cause great damage to the sector in which they compete. However, there is no consensus regarding what actions should be applied to them are not due to the negative consequences of maintaining or liquidating them. In view of this, the key issue is to prevent them from entering this state. It would therefore be useful to have a methodology for predicting years in advance when a company will become a zombie firm. For this purpose, this article has used different artificial intelligence algorithms applied to easily obtained accountant data. Thus, 78.4% of correct predictions have been utilizing a dataset of 356 Spanish small and medium-sized enterprises in the tourism sector.220,614Q2ESCI9,6ERIH PLU
