Les voyageurs canariens à Pompéi : le paysage volcanique dans les voyages en Italie de Viera y Clavijo, Pérez Galdós et Verdugo Bartlet
La atracción que han supuesto las ruinas de la ciudad romana de Pompeya no se ha
limitado al ámbito de la arqueología, sino que desde su descubrimiento se convirtió rápidamente
en uno de los destinos obligados del “Grand tour”, dejando una huella relevante en la llamada
“literatura de viajes”. De esta forma, Pompeya y el volcán Vesubio pasaron a ser protagonistas
recurrentes de los diarios de muchos escritores de diversidad de nacionalidades, entre las que se
encuentra la española. De esos autores, hemos querido centrar nuestra atención en los relatos
ofrecidos por tres autores canarios, porque queremos analizar si el hecho de proceder de un
territorio vinculado a erupciones volcánicas pudo condicionar o definir de alguna manera el
desarrollo de sus narraciones.The attraction of the ruins of the Roman city of Pompeii has not been limited solely
to the field of archaeology, but since its discovery it has quickly become one of the must-see
destinations on the “Grand Tour”, leaving a significant mark on the so-called “Travel Literature”.
Thus, Pompeii and the volcano Vesuvius became recurrent protagonists in the diaries of many
writers of different nationalities, including Spain. Among these authors, we have chosen to focus
our attention on the stories offered by three Canarian authors because we want to analyze whether
the fact of coming from a territory linked to volcanic eruptions could have conditioned or defined

Hematological and Biochemical Reference Values for Bonelli’s Eagles in the Wild and in Captivity: Implications for Conservation and Rehabilitation Programs
Background
Haematological and clinical biochemistry analyses are essential tools for evaluating the health status of avian species, including the endangered Bonelli’s eagle. Despite their importance, existing reference intervals (RIs) for such parameters in raptor species are frequently constrained by limited sample sizes, thus complicating clinical interpretations. This research followed the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASVCP) guidelines to establish haematological and clinical biochemistry reference intervals for the Bonelli’s eagle, utilizing an indirect approach. Conservation initiatives of the Bonelli’s eagle have provided a unique opportunity to gather a high number of samples under various conditions, facilitating a comprehensive comparison between wild and captive populations. Over the course of six years, from 2016 to 2021, our research analyzed 516 blood samples collected within the framework of a European Life Project. After rigorous data cleaning and stringent selection criteria application, a representative sample of 184 birds was determined. Various physiological parameters and blood lead levels were quantified in healthy individuals. Additionally, we used Principal Component Analysis to discern distinctions between populations and to investigate potential interrelationships among the diverse parameters.
Results
We established Reference Intervals for three distinct reference groups of birds: wild nestlings (
), captive nestlings (
), and adults (
). Our findings indicate that age significantly affects many blood parameters. Meanwhile, gender impacts only a few parameters in adult birds. Notably, wild nestlings exhibited higher levels of AST, K, TP, and Pb in their blood compared to those bred in captivity.
Conclusions
This paper provides the first reliable RI for physiological, haematological, and clinical biochemistry parameters in both nestling and adult Bonelli’s eagles. The data will augment the knowledge of the physiology of this endangered raptor, contributing significantly to the understanding and monitoring of both free-living birds and captivity programs.150,6582,3Q1Q1SCIE10,

Cuban Women in the Canary Islands (Spain): Coping with Deskilling and Reinventing Transnational Reproductive Practices
Since the turn of the century, the Cuban community on the Canary Islands has grown steadily due to a generationally deferred migration, built on the connections established by former Canarian emigrants and favoured by the possibility of obtaining Spanish citizenship. In general, in this EU outermost region, the role of Latin American immigrant women is of great importance, but in the case of Cuban, due to significant changes inherent in migration, the factor of skilling must be added, given their higher educational and socio-professional level. To carry out this research, a comparative analysis of the socio-economic position of women in both the Cuban and Canarian labour markets is made, and with their leading role in transnational relationships between Cuba and Spain. This allows us to exemplify the deep transformations caused by the process of emigration and the complexity of the links between the home and host country through gender roles.134107280,17Q2ESC
Neuropsychological Profile Associated With Borderline Personality Disorder: A Clinical Study In Females
Numerous studies have identified neurocognitive impairments in borderline personality disorder (BPD), particularly in executive functions (EF). However, findings have been inconsistent. This study aimed to evaluate the neuropsychological functioning of a clinical sample of women diagnosed with BPD receiving outpatient treatment. A total of 71 women (M(SD) = 28.5(6.5) years) were assessed using standardized neuropsychological tests measuring attention, memory, and EF, including the Trail Making Test, Stroop Test, Symbol Digit Modalities Test, Digit Span, Verbal Fluency, and Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test. The results indicate widespread impairments in attention, processing speed, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control, while verbal fluency and working memory remained within normative limits. Learning and memory performance exhibited a progressive decline over time compared to normative data. These findings support the hypothesis that young adult women with BPD experience broad neuropsychological impairments, with relative preservation in some cognitive domains. The observed decline in learning capacity underscores the need for tailored neuropsychological rehabilitation programs and psychotherapeutic adaptations to mitigate cognitive difficulties in this population.877315ESCI9,6ERIH PLU
First records of the Australian invasive weed Atriplex semilunaris Aellen (Amaranthaceae s.l.) in Gran Canaria and Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain)
The Australian invasive weed Atriplex semilunaris Aellen - in the Canary Islands known so far from the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, where it is listed among the most invasive species - was recently recorded for the first time in the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, a significant expansion of its distribution in the archipelago. Details about these first records, including a distribution map and new illustrations, are presented. Its recent appearance in Gran Canaria and Tenerife is very important, as it may be the gateway for its introduction to the rest of the islands of the archipelago. The ecological threats associated with the expansion of the species are discussed and the measures that seem appropriate are indicated. Finally, it cannot be ruled out that the species will spread further to the nearby North African coastal areas (or is already occurring there unnoticed), where the chance of establishment and expansion is optimal.121120,4441,5Q2Q3SCIE10,
Synthesis and characterization of avocado pit activated carbon-incorporated chitosan composite beads for harnessing methylene blue adsorption: DFT insights and box-behnken design optimization
Background: Methylene blue (MB), a toxic dye in industrial wastewater, requires efficient removal methods due to its environmental and health risks. This study uses activated carbon derived from avocado pits, modified with chitosan to form the CS@ACAP composite, to enhance adsorption. The research focuses on optimizing the synthesis, evaluating adsorption efficiency, and exploring the adsorption mechanisms through experimental and theoretical analyses. Methods: Activated carbon was synthesized and optimized using the Box-Behnken design, considering key parameters such as sulfuric acid concentration, activation time, and temperature. The material was then modified with chitosan to create the CS@ACAP composite. Both materials were characterized using FTIR, SEM, XRD, BET, pHpzc, and EDS analyses. Adsorption experiments were performed under varying conditions pH (2–10), contact time (10–180 min), adsorbent mass (0.02–0.14 g) to determine the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax). Isotherm and thermodynamic models, along with DFT simulations, were used to analyze the adsorption behavior and provide molecular-level insights into methylene blue interactions with the materials. Significant Findings: The CS@ACAP composite exhibited a higher adsorption capacity (81.0 mg/g) compared to activated carbon (40.2 mg/g). Activated carbon achieved optimal adsorption at pH 10, with 160 min and 0.12 g of adsorbent, while CS@ACAP required only 110 min and 0.08 g. Both materials followed the Langmuir model in isotherm studies. Thermodynamic analysis showed exothermic adsorption on activated carbon and endothermic adsorption on CS@ACAP. DFT simulations confirmed stronger MB interactions with CS@ACAP, underscoring its potential as an efficient adsorbent. AI-Driven Gesture and Action Recognition for Learning Medicine Through Virtual Reality
Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a prominent immersive technology, demonstrating significant potential for enhancing education and has been shown as an effective and efficient tool specifically for medical education. VR requires the utilization of dedicated wearable devices that, when worn by students, facilitate the creation of an immersive virtual environment and enable them to interact with both other students and virtual objects within it. However, the use of these gadgets may produce a distortion of the gestures and actions actually performed by the student, causing errors within the environment due to the technology itself and not the student’s mistaken intention. In medical education, this effect of convoluting the student’s own intention with what the hardware interface might limit is of vital importance, as it may result in a, medically speaking, erroneous action or gesture in the virtual scenario. Therefore, in medical education, virtual reality applications should be smart and able to correct these technology-related issues and limitations.
