    Dissolved organic carbon in coastal waters: global patterns, stocks and environmental physical controls

    Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in coastal waters is integral to biogeochemical cycling, but global and regional drivers of DOC are still uncertain. In this study we explored spatial and temporal differences in DOC concentrations and stocks across the global coastal ocean, and how these relate to temperature and salinity. We estimated a global median coastal DOC stock of 3.15 Pg C (interquartile range (IQR) = 0.85 Pg C), with median DOC concentrations being 2.2 times higher than in open ocean surface waters. Globally and seasonally, salinity was the main driver of DOC with concentrations correlated negatively with salinity, without a clear relationship to temperature. DOC concentrations and stocks varied with region and season and this pattern is likely driven by riverine inputs of DOC and nutrients that stimulate coastal phytoplankton production. Temporally, high DOC concentrations occurred mainly in months with high freshwater input, with some exceptions such as in Eastern Boundary Current margins where peaks are related to primary production stimulated by nutrients upwelled from the adjacent ocean. No spatial trend between DOC and temperature was apparent, but many regions (19 out of 25) had aligned peaks of seasonal temperature and DOC, related to increased phytoplankton production and vertical stratification at high temperatures. Links of coastal DOC with salinity and temperature highlight the potential for anthropogenic impacts to alter coastal DOC concentration and composition, and thereby ecosystem status.202,3875,4Q1Q1SCIE11,

    A New Graphical Method for Displaying Two-Dimensional Echocardiography Results in Dogs: Comprehensive Analysis of Results of Diagnostic Imaging Organized in a BOX (CARDIOBOX)

    Introduction and objective: Rapid and efficient interpretation of echocardiographic findings is critical in clinical decision-making. This study aimed to design and validate a new graphical method, called CARDIOBOX, to represent echocardiographic findings in dogs. Methods: A prospective, observational, exploratory cohort study was conducted over three years. The design of CARDIOBOX was based on baseline values obtained from 802 healthy dogs and 2165 ill dogs. Using these data, a graph consisting of nine boxes was built to show the intervals of the different echocardiographic measurements. Validation of the method was performed by a survey of 55 veterinarians, who compared the use of CARDIOBOX with the use of numerical tables. Results: CARDIOBOX demonstrated significantly faster interpretability (p < 0.05) without reducing its effectiveness. In addition, the staff surveyed considered it easy to use and interpret. Conclusions: The introduction of CARDIOBOX emerges as a resource that facilitates rapid and efficient interpretation of echocardiographic findings in dogs. This new graphical method is presented as a valuable tool for veterinary professionals in clinical decision-making in the field of veterinary cardiology.110,5522,0Q1Q210,

    Development and Comparison of Reference Equations for the Six-Minute Walk Test in Spanish Healthy Adults Aged 45–85 Years

    Objectives: (i) To develop sex-specific reference equations to predict distance walked (6MWD) in the 6-minute walk test (6MWT), in healthy subjects aged 45–85 years, from different geographic areas of Spain; and (ii) to compare developed equations with previously published in a large sample of COPD patients. Methods: First, a cross-sectional multicentre sample of randomly selected healthy subjects from 17 Spanish hospitals and universities performed two 6MWT. Linear regression and fractional polynomial modelling were used to develop the equations. Second, the developed equations were applied to 715 COPD patients from Spanish primary care centres and hospitals, and the % predicted 6MWD obtained was compared with previously published equations using Dunnett's multiple comparisons test. Results: 568 healthy subjects were included (51% females, mean (SD) age 62 (11) years), walked a 6MWD of 615 (113) and 557 (93) m in males and females, respectively. The developed equations included age, weight and height, and explained 43% and 51% of the 6MWD variance for males and females, respectively. In the COPD sample (n = 715, 14% females, 68 (9) years, FEV1 61 (18) % predicted, 6MWD 464 (97) m), only 1 out of 9 previously published equations for males, and 6 out of 9 for females predicted 6MWD values similar to those of the newly developed Spanish reference equations. Conclusions: The newly developed reference equations provide a more valid prediction of 6MWD in Spanish adults with COPD compared to previously published equations.     En este trabajo se explora la trayectoria, desde la poesía griega antigua hasta la cultura contemporánea, de un tópico literario: el de los celos de las cosas o animales en contacto con la persona amada. El motivo conoce dos modalidades retóricas, no exclusivas: la envidia de los objetos (o animales) próximos a la amada y el deseo de transformarse en dichos seres. El tópico es un recurso ingenioso para expresar el deseo que el sujeto lírico experimenta por la persona amada, especialmente en situaciones de separación o de amor no correspondido. Florece en géneros de contenido amatorio como el epigrama griego antiguo, la elegía latina, la oda anacreóntica, la novela sentimental y la poesía moderna de tema amoroso. Se documenta en poetas antiguos como los autores de epigramas griegos, o como Catulo y Ovidio; y en escritores modernos como Ludovico Dolce, Gutierre de Cetina (o Diego Hurtado de Mendoza), Esteban Manuel de Villegas, Juan Meléndez Valdés, Barnabe Barnes, Novalis, Salvador Díaz Mirón, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, Rafael Lasso de la Vega, Pedro Salinas, Torcuato Luca de Tena, Gloria Fuertes, Ana Rossetti y Luis Alberto de Cuenca. The motif takes on two nonexclusive rhetorical modalities: the envy of objects and animals close to the beloved and the desire to transform into those beings. The topos is a sophisticated device to express the desire that the lyrical subject feels for the beloved one, especially in conditions of physical separation or unrequited love.     Focal shock waves increase efficacy and prolong the effect of botulinum toxin on spasticity in patients with brain injury from stroke and multiple sclerosis

    Abstract Objective Assess the effects on spasticity reduction of the association between focal extracorporeal shock wave therapy and botulinum toxin type A, versus the toxin only in brain injury patients. Design Eighteen patients were included. The study had two phases: the first phase was observational, and botulinum toxin type A was used. The second was a prospective, deliberate intervention phase in which the toxin was injected and focal extracorporeal shock wave treatment was added (1 sessions/week, for three weeks). The patients were followed up in the 1st, 4th and 6th month, the Ashworth Scale criterion was applied and, for those with lower limb involvement and changes in walking the 10-metre walk test was used. Results Patients treated with toxin only showed a statistically significant improvement in spasticity, with 1 point on the Ashworth Scale from week 5, which disappeared at week 17. However, the combined therapy reduced spasticity by 2 points from week 1 to week 25 (p < 0.001), with a faster result in the 10-meter gait test (p = 0.004). Conclusion Combined and simultaneous treatment with botulinum toxin and focal extracorporeal shock wave reduced spasticity in a more effective and prolonged way than treatment with botulinum toxin only.230226240,6772,2Q1Q1SCIE11,

    Toxicity of tire rubber-derived pollutants 6PPD-quinone and 4-tert-octyl-phenol on marine plankton

    The impacts of tire wear particles and their associated chemicals on the aquatic systems are a major environmental concern. In this study, we investigated the acute toxicity of two pollutants derived from tire rubber, 6PPD-quinone and 4-tert-octylphenol, on marine plankton. Specifically, we determined the acute effects of these pollutants on various organisms within the plankton food web: the microalgae Rhodomonas salina, the adult copepod Acartia tonsa, and the early life stages of the echinoderms Arbacia lixula and Paracentrotus lividus and the fish Sparus aurata. Exposure to 6PPD-quinone did not affect the microalgae growth, copepod survival, or fish embryo viability after 48 h of exposure at concentrations up to 1000 µgL-1. However, 6PPD-quinone significantly inhibited the growth of early developmental stages of both echinoderm species, with median effective concentrations of 7 and 8 µgL-1. Conversely, 4-tert-octylphenol was toxic to all studied organisms, with median lethal and effective concentrations ranging from 21 to 79 µgL-1 depending on the species and endpoints. The most sensitive planktonic organisms to 4-tert-octylphenol were echinoderm embryos and copepods, which exhibited negative effects at concentrations as low as 1 and 25 µgL-1, respectively. Our results demonstrate that acute exposure to 6PPD-quinone and 4-tert-octylphenol can cause harmful effects on key planktonic organisms at environmentally relevant concentrations. Overall, our findings highlight the need for develop ecologically safer tire rubber additives and reduce traffic-related tire particle emissions to mitigate their entry and potential impacts on aquatic ecosystems.132,9513,6Q1Q1SCIE11,
