Tropicalization induced by non-native species in the western Mediterranean Sea: Effects on decapod crustacean taxocoenoses
Geographic distributional range shifts are a common effect caused by global warming on marine species, usually leading to polewards displacements of their native distribution. These climate-induced distributional expansions can cause the introduction of warmer alien species in higher latitude areas, which leads to the tropicalization of these areas. In decapod crustaceans, the external body shape has been identified as an essential trait to assess the invasive potential of species given its relevance in their biological and ecological performance. The present study analyses the abundance trends of two tropical anomuran decapods that expanded their distribution and established in the western Mediterranean in recent decades (the squat lobster Iridonida speciosa and the hermit crab Pagurus mbizi) and assess their impacts on the population dynamics of their taxocoenoses along the Iberian Peninsula (western Mediterranean Sea) over 25 years (1994–2018). In addition, external morphology, measured with geometric morphometric methods, was used to characterize the taxocoenoses to evaluate whether it contributes to understanding the invasive ability of allochthonous species. The results showed that the exotic species that achieved dominant levels (I. speciosa) presented some particular morphological differences from native species that likely provide it with greater exploitation efficiency or unoccupied niche opportunities to avoid or overcome competition with residents. However, the invader that settled itself apparently favoured by external or environmental variables but failed to establish dense populations (P. mbizi) was morphologically similar to native species. This overlap probably implies ecological competition for the available resources, thus reducing the probability of becoming abundant within the taxocoenosis. The findings of the model agree with those obtained in other taxonomic groups, which reinforces the hypothesis that external morphology is an additional element to be considered within the complex combination of factors determining the success of marine invasive processes.130,762,6Q1Q1SCIE11,

The Impact of Social Support on Postoperative Recovery in Retinal Detachment Surgery
Background and Objectives: Retinal detachment is a severe ophthalmological condition requiring urgent surgical intervention and comprehensive postoperative management. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of perceived social support (PSS) on postoperative adherence, pain management, and reintervention rates in patients undergoing retinal detachment surgery. It was hypothesized that higher levels of PSS would be associated with better postoperative outcomes, particularly in adherence and anxiety management. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted with 166 patients at a tertiary hospital between 2022 and 2024. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected, and PSS was assessed using the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) questionnaire (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.96). The primary outcomes included adherence to postoperative recommendations, reintervention rates, additional analgesic use, and local complications. Given the non-normal distribution of key variables, non-parametric statistical analyses were performed, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: PSS scores were consistently high (median: 5; IQR: 4.7–5.0). Adherence rates were excellent (100% at 7 and 15 days; 99.04% at 30 days). Reintervention rates remained low (0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% at 7, 15, and 30 days, respectively). The need for additional analgesia decreased significantly over time (46.43% at 7 days vs. 13.33% at 30 days; p = 0.041). Preoperative anxiety was significantly associated with higher postoperative analgesic consumption (median STAI score: 38 [IQR: 34–42], p = 0.041). A significant relationship was found between higher preoperative anxiety levels and greater postoperative analgesic use (p = 0.041). However, no significant associations were found between PSS and major clinical outcomes such as reintervention or complications. Conclusions: These findings suggest that PSS may influence adherence to postoperative recommendations, although its direct impact on clinical outcomes remains uncertain. The significant association between higher preoperative anxiety and increased postoperative analgesic consumption highlights the need for psychosocial and educational interventions in RD surgical care.
Crossing the Rubicon: Historical Archaeology in the Canary Islands between Management, the Academic World and the Search for a Nomenclature
This paper presents some reflections on the advances and setbacks of ‘historical’ archaeology in the Canary Islands. The last decade is taken as a reference as a scenario to observe whether there has been a debate on its nomenclature, its specific field of work and its consideration in the academic and legal spheres. In this sense, the new Law of Cultural Heritage of the Canary Islands, unanimously approved by the Canarian parliament on 25 April, 2019. We will take as an example of this other Canarian archaeology the site of San Marcial de Rubicón.301300,0Q14,
The pedagogical experience we hereby present has been carried out during a Spanish course offered
by the CICI program (Courses in Languages and International Communication) at the University of Las
Palmas de Gran Canaria. This course has been aimed at French-speaking university students with a
B1 level of Spanish as a foreign or second language. The objectives pursued by this course have been
as follows: 1) to assimilate Spanish grammar and cultural content, 2) to become familiar with the use
of the Canarian variety of Spanish, and 3) to learn about the historical heritage of the island of Gran
Canaria. The methodology we have applied is based on experiential learning and the action research
method, using authentic materials. Through this approach, the students have acquired meaningful
knowledge by engaging with reality in a linguistic immersion context. Additionally, the teachers have
succeeded in eliminating stereotypes and fostering curiosity among the students regarding Canarian
linguistic and cultural heritage. The students have expressed their satisfaction with the active methodology
employed and have demonstrated proactivity in response to the activities proposed by the instructors.
The evaluation of the course planning has been positive: both the designed activities and the
active role of the teachers in construction of knowledge have been well received by the students and
have encouraged reflection on Canarian culture.36936
Students’ perception of a double-flipped classroomexperience in the Degree of Translation and Interpreting:Evidence from the course Language B II English
This paper describes the students’ perception of a flipped classroom experience which has been carried
out in the course Language B II English in the first year of the Degree in Translation and Interpreting
(English-German) at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. A double-flipped classroom
model has been used and so students have taken on the role of the teacher in order to show their
understanding of a given grammar topic. The data related to participants’ perceptions have been gathered
from a post-experience survey which shows that, despite enjoying the prior preparation, students
do not have a clear preference for the double-flipped classroom. In fact, a significant number of them
exhibit a neutral attitude. These findings suggest that a combination of more traditional methodologies
with other more active and dynamic ones, such as the double flipped classroom, could provide a more
effective response in catering the full spectrum of student preferences.
Proposal of groundwater governance indexes: application to nine Spanish aquifers
Groundwater management and governance have properties related to the long renewal time, evapo-concentration processes in the soil and interaction with the rock, and dispersion, mixing and degradation of possible contaminants. Groundwater is part of the hydrologic balance, with specific properties and different behaviours from that of surface water, although there are interconnected. These differences also appear in other aspects related to economy, society, norms and administration, and to water ethics and morality. These differences are not always taken into account by water managers and decision makers. A methodology is being used to evaluate quantitatively groundwater management and sound governance. A score of themes are classified into aspects and categories, including hydrogeological knowledge, administration and socio-economics aspects. Three indexes are presented, the most developed of them correcting reserve depletion, unavoidable discharges and legal restrictions. The proposed indexes were tested in nine pilot areas in Spain, representing different circumstances, scales and environmental conditions. The discussion refers to aquifers and aquifer systems, considering the corresponding groundwater bodies and their quantitative and chemical status. It is not possible to condense the reality into one or a few figures. Comparisons have to be considered cautiously as a broad guide, with possible notable deviations, especially considering the groundwater average renewal time. There is not a well-defined correlation between groundwater management - governance evaluation and groundwater body's status, but they have some common aspects that are relevant to improve groundwater management and governance.31473129190,8983,9Q1Q1SCIE11,
