Enhancing Breast Cancer Histopathological Image Classification: The Impact of Stain Normalization on Multilevel Feature Extraction

    No full text
Histopathological examination involves the microscopic analysis of breast tissue samples, which is crucial for diagnosing and classifying breast cancer. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have led to the development of machine learning and deep learning models for classifying histopathological images. Feature extraction depends heavily on the quality and uniformity of the input data. Stain normalization techniques are employed to standardize the visual appearance of images, ensuring a consistent representation of underlying tissue structures. This research explores the impact of stain normalization on various image features used to classify breast cancer histopathological images. We investigate low-, mid-, and high-levels of feature extraction with different classifiers for the multiclass classification of the Breast Cancer Histology dataset (BACH). The findings demonstrated that stain normalization methods are instrumental in enhancing the interpretability and dependability of histopathological image analysis across multiple levels.111,2844,9Q1Q1SCIE10,

Spatial correlation between climate change and economic growth in EU

    No full text
Over the past decade, Europe has faced significant challenges due to the increase in net greenhouse gas emissions and the resulting economic losses associated with climate change. This article focuses on a detailed analysis of the trends in such emissions, the economic losses incurred, and the impact of adopted environmental taxation policies. Utilizing data from Eurostat spanning from 2013 to 2021, our study aims to explore the interconnections among these factors, evaluate the effectiveness of implemented fiscal policies in mitigating these impacts, and examine their spatial distribution. Through the application of the Moran's Index, we examined the presence of spatial autocorrelation in the data to identify any significant geographic patterns. Results reveal that there has been a slight decrease in net greenhouse gas emissions across Europe from 2013 to 2021, thanks the efforts to curb them also through environmental taxation policies. The analysis indicates that while environmental taxation policies have been implemented, their effectiveness in reducing emissions and mitigating economic losses varies across regions. Some areas have seen more success in curbing emissions and minimizing economic impacts compared to others

Modelling the alpha and beta diversity of copepods across tropical and subtropical Atlantic ecoregions

    No full text
Copepods, the most abundant individuals of the mesozooplankton, play a pivotal role in marine food webs and carbon cycling. However, few studies have focused on their diversity and the environmental factors influencing it. The objective of the present study is to model the alpha and beta diversity of copepods across the tropical and subtropical ecoregions of Atlantic Ocean using both taxonomic and functional approaches. The study used a dataset of 226 copepod species collected by stratified plankton hauls (0–800 m depth) across the tropical and equatorial Atlantic, from oligotrophic waters close to the Brazilian coast to more productive waters close to the Mauritanian Upwelling. To perform the functional analysis, six traits related to the behaviour, growth, and reproduction of copepods were selected. Several alpha diversities were estimated using taxonomic metrics (SR, Δ+, and Λ+) and functional metrics (FDis, FEve, FDiv, FOri, FSpe), and modelized with GAM model across spatial and environmental gradients, and day/night. The overall and two components of β-diversity (turnover and nestedness) were shared between depth and stations. The surface layers of stations from oligotrophic, equatorial, and Cape Verde ecoregions displayed higher values of taxonomic α-diversity. More unpredictable were the facets of functional α-diversity, although they showed a tendency to be positive with depth during the daytime. The GAM analysis revealed spatial gradients as the key factors modelling the taxonomic α-diversity, whereas depth was the most relevant for functional α-diversity. The turnover component drove taxonomic β-diversity in depth and station, whereas the nestedness component acquired relevance for the functional β-diversity. The taxonomic structure of the copepod community varied spatially across depths and ecoregions, but this was not linked to functional changes of the same magnitude

Gender diversity on boards and environmental violations in European firms

    No full text
Knowledge of the impact of board gender diversity on environmental violations in Europe remains limited, as previous literature has focused on socially responsible practices, with less research being directed toward the determinants of corporate actions that harm the environment. This study aimed to address this gap through a multi-theoretical approach and by using different estimation methods. In addition, we used penalties related to environmentally harmful practices, since they represent an appropriate proxy for measuring environmental irresponsibility given that they directly reflect sanctions imposed by regulators and are therefore not subject to manipulation or greenwashing practices. We analyzed a sample of non-financial firms in the STOXX Europe 600 index for 2016-2022. Our findings indicate that board gender diversity leads to a reduction in environmental violations. These results suggest that female directors help mitigate environmental misconduct by improving oversight, enhancing the firm's public image, and facilitating access to essential resources. In addition, board gender diversity improves decision-making and fosters a culture of sustainability by integrating diverse perspectives and approaches. We validated the robustness of our results by using different procedures to address endogeneity issues (OLS, TOBIT, 2SLS, Heckman, and GMM).1451172
