Optimism amid risk: How non-IT employees’ beliefs affect cybersecurity behavior
Purpose: This study delves into the interplay between personal dispositions and cybersecurity behaviors within organizational settings. It investigates how optimism bias influences attitudes toward cybersecurity and subsequently affects cybersecurity behavior. Additionally, it examines the moderating role of information security awareness in shaping the relationship between attitude and risky cybersecurity behavior. Design/methodology/approach: Drawing upon extensive research on coping mechanisms and attitude-behavior consistency, we develop a research model that hypothesizes the dynamics of optimism bias, attitude toward cybersecurity, risky cybersecurity behavior, and information security awareness. Survey data are collected from non-IT employees across the United States, and the model is empirically validated using structural equation modeling (SEM). Findings: This study finds that optimism bias directly contributes to risky cybersecurity behavior and fosters a negative attitude toward cybersecurity. It also reveals that a poor attitude toward cybersecurity further reinforces risky cybersecurity behavior. Additionally, information security awareness is found to negatively moderate the relationship between the attitude toward cybersecurity and risky cybersecurity behavior. Originality/Value: This study investigates optimism bias in the context of cybersecurity. It enhances the theoretical and empirical understanding of optimism bias in cybersecurity by revealing its influence on cybersecurity attitude and behavior in organizational settings. It also offers managerial insights into the importance of shaping non-IT employees’ cybersecurity attitudes and behavior through risk communication, cybersecurity education, and training

In the best-case scenario, schools are sites where democracy is learned and practiced. Students study the history of democracies, how democracies flourish and flounder, and what their roles are as citizens. They explore how to engage across difference, find solutions, and make compromises. They learn the power of multiple voices and of coalitions and of the long game. In these current strange days, those of us who work with schools and with teachers are learning something else: we are learning how inequity threatens democracy. The United States is currently awash in an anti-critical race theory backlash and in efforts to strip books from classrooms. We are in the banning years. Since 2021, schools have seen unprecedented efforts to ban books, ban the curriculum, and ban diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Efforts to teach diverse perspectives are now being categorized not as inclusive, but as divisive. It is these realities that this chapter will address. How are diversity and equity being challenged in school? To what end? What are the common techniques? And most importantly, how can teachers stay alert to these threats to democracy and counter inequities that harm us all
The Message Behind the Aesthetic: Intersections of Class and Sexuality in Oscar Wilde\u27s The Picture of Dorian Gray
Oscar Wilde\u27s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) follows the life of a doomed high-class gay man named Dorian while revealing a discussion of art and the imitation of life itself. This paper reveals the parallels between characters like Dorian and Lord Henry\u27s life to Wilde himself and how they all move through society as high-class gay men. The intersectionality of both identities provides a social commentary on societal policing, compulsory heterosexuality, and the villainization of queerness through the lives of men who lived in 19th-century England with challenges like the Criminal Amendment Act of 1885 and laws against sodomy. By the end of the paper, I explain the need for a queer death in the novel, and how the intersectionality of class and sexuality provides points of privilege while still revealing the oppression gay men faced in 19th-century England

HeliosFair: Fair Sharing of Solar Energy Costs in Communities
As solar electricity has become cheaper than the retail electricity price, residential consumers are trying to reduce costs by meeting more demand using solar energy. One way to achieve this is to invest in the solar infrastructure collaboratively. When houses form a coalition, houses with high solar potential or surplus roof capacity can install more panels and share the generated solar energy with others, lowering the total cost. Fair sharing of the resulting cost savings across the houses is crucial to prevent the coalition from breaking. However, estimating the fair share of each house is complex as houses contribute different amounts of generation and demand in the coalition, and rooftop solar generation across houses with similar roof capacities can vary widely. In this paper, we present HeliosFair, a system that minimizes the total electricity costs of a community that shares solar energy and then uses Shapley values to fairly distribute the cost savings thus obtained. Using real-world data, we show that the joint CapEx and OpEx electricity costs of a community sharing solar can be reduced by 12.7% on average (11.3% on average with roof capacity constraints) over houses installing solar energy individually. Our Shapley-value-based approach can fairly distribute these savings across houses based on their contributions towards cost reduction, while commonly used ad hoc approaches are unfair under many scenarios. HeliosFair is also the first work to consider practical constraints such as the difference in solar potential across houses, rooftop capacity and weight of solar panels, making it deployable in practice
