Carl Santino Zarcone is a first-generation law student at Roger Williams University School of Law (Class of 2027). As a former NCAA athlete and storyteller, he weaves together discipline, creativity, and the pursuit of justice. Previously, he worked in the entertainment industry with Angel Studios and Netflix. Poetry is another passion for Carl, whether on the field, in the courtroom, or on the page. I used to write extensively about my own personal troubles, there would be a message but it was intensely personal and based around a bad experience with a close friend. There is a sea 
Located between 
here  and there  
Do you see?  
  
How it shimmers in the dark  
Still as the dead  
Lying in their coffins  
Sheltered from their mistake  
  
It lies between  the purple purgatory mountains  
And your hometown  
Laying quietly by the sea  
Full of faces you half know  
  
They wait for you  
Sitting in their coffee shops  
Stuck in time  
Still in life  
  
They lounge  
Sipping their coffee  
All to “spill the tea” on the same 4 people 
But you haven’t been back.   
No?  
  
“Aimless”   
rings in your mind like the bells of your hometowns second congregational 
church  
You never went of course  
But you miss the 10 A.M call for mass  
All the little old portuguese ladies shuffling out to go to brunch at “The 
Restaurant” Clump together like flowers in  your mothers hair  
  
Mabye you left your little town  
Because you were never really there  
Mabye you had to lose yourself   
Be blown away by your city  
To really find yourself  
For as close as your little town is  
There is always an ocean  
  
Always wind  
To carry you  
cross  the 
sea  
To drift at sea  
  
All alone with no one but me  
You’d lose yourself in that great madness  
But to be aimless in your little town  
Is to drift in one place  
No movement  
  
So go be at sea  
Brave the waves   
Cross, and you may truly be free  
For to find yourself

The Roger Williams University Law Review will present their annual symposium on Friday, November 
15, 2024. 
The phrase “justice for all” is supposed to be a foundational principle of American law. Yet, for those 
among the lower rungs of society, justice remains elusive. The legal system routinely disenfranchises 
people based on race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and other immutable characteristics, and 
legal actors who are supposed to ensure access for all instead uphold these exclusions by denying 
people equal treatment under the law. All people, regardless of their position in society, deserve access 
to legal representation and education.  
The Roger William University Law Review’s newest journal, Justice for All, proudly presents a 
symposium focusing on the importance of practicing trauma-informed lawyering to build effective 
attorney-client relationships and provide holistic representation that accounts for the realities of 
traumatic experiences. Speakers will discuss trauma-informed practice, what is meant by the terms 
"trauma" and "vicarious trauma," representing clients who have survived domestic violence, sexual

MEET THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER 
 
Jamie Beck, Esq. 
Jamie Beck, Esq., is the owner of J.D. Beck Consulting, which supports attorneys, law firms, and 
organizations working with survivors of human trafficking, domestic and sexual violence, and child 
abuse. Ms. Beck previously served as the president & managing attorney of Free to Thrive, a Southern 
California-based nonprofit organization that aims to advance justice and transform the legal system for 
human trafficking survivors. Ms. Beck also serves as an adjunct lecturer in law at USC Gould School of 
Law and Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, teaching the Trauma-Informed Legal Skills course. 
Ms. Beck previously served as the President & Managing Attorney of Free to Thrive, a Southern 
California-based nonprofit organization with the mission of advancing justice and transforming the legal 
system for human trafficking survivors through legal services, education, and policy advocacy. She has 
over a decade of experience representing human trafficking survivors in a variety of legal matters 
including domestic violence restraining orders, child custody, divorce, name and gender changes and 
victim’s rights representation. 
Ms. Beck also serves as an Adjunct Lecturer in Law at USC Gould School of Law and Pepperdine Caruso 
School of Law teaching the course Trauma-Informed Legal Skills. She serves on the Dean’s Board of 
Advisors for the University of San Diego Kroc School of Peace Studies. Ms. Beck has trained thousands of 
attorneys, students, stakeholders and community members on human trafficking and trauma-informed 
practices. Ms. Beck graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law where she was a member 
of the San Diego Law Review. Ms. Beck attended law school because she wanted to help others and she 
knew that the legal system is a powerful tool to do so.

Attorneys owe all clients a duty of “competent representation” under the Model Rules of Professional 
Conduct §1.1, but representing clients who have experienced trauma requires more than legal 
knowledge and preparation. Lawyers need to understand the neurobiological impact of trauma and how 
it can affect a person’s ability to access memories, make decisions, and communicate. This panel will 
explore how to provide “competent representation” of clients who have experienced trauma and the 
skills that every attorney needs, regardless of practice area, to communicate with and respond to these

Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and trafficking often need more than competent legal 
representation to move forward and heal from the trauma they have experienced. Attorneys working 
with these clients should ensure these clients’ basic needs are met and provide them with autonomy to 
make decisions about the future. Panelists will discuss how attorneys can provide these clients with

Many plaintiffs who seek counsel because they or a loved one has endured a tragedy experience trauma 
that can become overwhelming when faced with the prospect of litigation. Trauma-informed lawyering 
can decrease the risk of exacerbating trauma, strengthen the attorney-client relationship, and prepare a 
client for difficult conversations regarding potential outcomes of their case, compensation, and how to 
move forward. Panelists will also discuss strategies for mitigating vicarious trauma when working on 
challenging cases.

Lesson Learning Objectives: 
1. Reinforce hydrology concepts (precipitation, watersheds, hydrographs, stormwater 
runoff, stormwater controls) with an application of SELDM. 
2. Apply SELDM to generate planning level estimates of upstream, impervious area, and 
downstream hydrographs and water quality constituents. 
3. Apply SELDM to generate planning level estimates of stormwater structural controls on a 
downstream hydrograph and water quality constituents. 
4. Interpret data outputs from SELDM by producing graphs that can be used for water 
management decisions.

Pre-Exercise Activities: 
1. Instruct students to download and install SELDM on a PC with a Windows operating 
system following the instructions on the DownloadInstructions PDF. The software must 
be downloaded and installed prior to the lesson. Participation can be incentivized by 
including this in a pre-lesson homework for points. 
 
SELDM 1.1.1 is the latest version of the software and is recommended.

Lesson 1 Steps: 
Total time = 80 mins 
1. Pull up the Lesson 1 slides and have students complete the pre-assessment by scanning 
the QR code (5 min) 
2. Present Lesson 1 slides (approximately 25 mins) 
3. Walk through exercise using the Lesson 1 handout as a guide (approximately 50 mins) 
Lesson 2 Steps: 
Total time = 80 mins 
1. Present Lesson 2 slides (approximately 15 mins) 
2. Students analyze and interpret their outputs using the Excel Results template and Lesson 
2 digital handout (60 mins) 
a. Demonstrate how to find the results, copy a text output into the appropriate 
spreadsheet, and show where the results graphs can be found 
b. During the rest of the class period, circulate around the room while students work 
on this exercise and answering the questions. If they paid attention during the 
presentation at the beginning of class, you basically gave them the answers!  
3. Have students complete a post-assessment (last 5 mins of class) 
4. Students should complete the Lesson 2 handout for homework.
