Movement ecology of gelatinous zooplankton: approaches, challenges and future directions

    No full text
Understanding the movement patterns and behavior of marine organisms is fundamental for numerous ecological, conservation and management applications. Over the past several decades, advancements in tracking technologies and analytical methods have revolutionized our ability to study marine animal movements. Oceanic zooplankton often make up the bulk of the macroscopic animal biomass in the oceans, yet we know very little about the life histories, migrations and long-term behaviors of these ecologically important animals. In this Review, we consider recent developments in marine movement ecology and animal tracking techniques of gelatinous zooplankton, and discuss the challenges, opportunities and future directions in this rapidly evolving field

Conceptualising Global Environmental Governance Through the Lens of Coloniality

    No full text
In this article, we unpack and critically engage with the contemporary dynamics of global environmental governance. We specifically address the persistence of uneven relations of power despite the attempts under the “participatory turn” to enhance democratic decision-making among environmental actors. We argue that rather than foster equity and justice, contemporary environmental governance institutions reinforce and replicate existing power relations. To illustrate our argument, we situate the concept and practice of global environmental governance historically and employ the concept of coloniality to illustrate the different mechanisms that uphold and reproduce power. We argue that this more nuanced understanding of how power is operationalised in global environmental governance provides a valuable tool for analysing the dynamics of participation and inclusion

Treasury auction method and underpricing: Evidence from Iceland

    No full text
The Central Bank of Iceland replaced the discriminatory method used for auctioning treasury securities with the uniform-price method in 2009. We analyze underpricing before and after this institutional reform with a sample of 516 auctions organized from 2000 to 2018. After controlling for auction characteristics and financial market conditions, we find that underpricing is lower under the uniform-price method. However, this underpricing decline does not translate into a reduction in sovereign issuance cost. The emergence of overpricing, observed in the late part of our sample, coincides with the growing importance of commissions paid to primary dealers. Our results provide practical implications for governments, regulators, and market participants

Generative AI (GenAI) for Co-Creating User Personas

    Get PDF
Integrating Generative AI into communication courses can really enhance the development of user personas, making the process smoother and encouraging critical insights into audience analysis. This G.I.F.T.S. presentation shows how tools like ChatGPT can support students in developing user personas while encouraging creativity and efficiency for the students. Students will be creating two personas, one human-created and one that is AI-generated, followed by conducting a comparative analysis of similarities, differences, and any potential biases. The activity underlines basic competencies in the development of user personas and ethical considerations that prepare students for the responsible use of AI with a full understanding of its limitations. Reflection upon the comparative analysis teaches students how to integrate insights from both approaches into one coherent understanding of their audience or users

AI, Celebrities, and their Fans: The Cyber-Pseudo-Event*

    Get PDF
Tech companies often use celebrities to facilitate adoption of new technologies, and they’re doing the same with AI. For example, Meta is employing celebrities to attract users to their AI products, not only to adopt the technology, but to provide the company data for testing and optimizing the products. Fan communities, such as Nicki Minaj’s Barbz, have also taken up AI technology as a new medium for fandom expression. This paper will explore the varying degrees of success of these applications of AI technology, while putting them in conversation with scholarship on images, celebrity, and fandom. *Top Graduate Pape
