Exploring Fashion Geometric Pattern Design Process Using a Semiotic Method
Get PDFIn recent years, the rapid growth of the economy and increasing degree of globalization have led to a continuous increase in demand for cross-cultural design. To meet this demand, the academic community and the fashion industry have continuously analyzed and developed methods for providing cross-cultural fashion pattern design. This study explores a symbol-based fashion pattern design method. Several commonly used geometric patterns in fashion pattern design were selected as research objects, and a method of symbolizing patterns in fashion pattern design was proposed to suit cross-cultural design. When redesigning fashion geometric patterns, typical patterns are symbolized. The results showed that the processed samples exhibited good adaptability for design applications. Therefore, this study indicates that the symbolic method can be applied to fashion pattern design, and this design method can be further systematized to achieve cross-cultural fashion design

A Worldwide Assessment of Quantitative Finance Research through Bibliometric Analysis
Get PDFThe field of quantitative finance has been rapidly growing in both academics and practice. This article applies bibliometric analysis to investigate the current state of quantitative finance research. A comprehensive dataset of 2,723 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection database, between 1992 to 2022, is collected and analyzed. CiteSpace and VOSViewer are adopted to visualize the bibliometric analysis. The article identifies the most relevant research in quantitative finance according to journals, articles, research areas, authors, institutions, and countries. The study further identifies emerging research topics in quantitative finance, e.g. deep learning, neural networks, quantitative trading, and reinforcement learning. This article contributes to the literature by providing a systematic overview of the developments, trajectories, objectives, and potential future research topics in the field of quantitative finance
Psychosocial Health Education Within Community Mental Health Inpatient Recovery Wards In UK: Patients’ Voices
Get PDFSocieties include people vulnerable to mental health distress; such people may find themselves detained. Mental health recovery wards seek to rehabilitate individuals who suffer severe, and enduring mental health distress, through community living, to re-establish, or learn new life-skills. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended more structured group activity to improve interpersonal functioning, including psychologically informed approaches. Psychosocial health education is qualified teacher-led, rather than psychoeducation, psychology, or interventions implemented by other health professionals, peer support workers, or storytelling by patients to each other. This study outlines patients’ evaluations of psychosocial education within inpatient recovery/rehabilitation wards during 2016-2021. Patients (87%; n=82) who opted to attend 12 courses, provided anonymous voices through use of a numerical rating scale, manuscript written free text (n=93), and completed a short questionnaire (n=10), across two National Health Service (NHS) wards in the West Midlands, England, UK. Patients’ voices were qualitatively analysed thematically. Ten distinguished themes suggested that psychosocial education was interesting, enjoyable, sociable, transformative, of decent quality, and projected to be of much benefit to patients’ future lives. Ratings (n=270) were hierarchically analysed using GENSTAT to distinguish patients’ preferences. Preferences for courses from patients’ voices were exercise and mental health, wellness planning, feelings and emotions, Tai chi, mood and food, steps to confidence, stress busting, hearing voices, peer recovery, self-esteem, motivation, and bite size psychology. Patients believed education, with goal setting supported by all staff, provided new embedded knowledge, applicable to integration into society, with improved interpersonal functioning
Exploring the Opinions of Mathematics Teacher Candidates Regarding the Usage of Gamified Digital Education Platform “Dersigo”
Get PDFIn the present day, as technology merges with education, various tools, and applications are widely used in both classroom and outside learning experiences. In this context, in Turkey as well, a digital education application named "DERSİGO" aims to reach students by adopting a fully immersive learning model and a gamified approach. DERSİGO is an innovative educational platform offering visually supported topic explanations, content from question to topic, educational videos, and other supportive learning materials. The use of this educational application is increasingly gaining attention. The purpose and importance of this research are to examine how the digital education application named DERSIGO is evaluated by pre-service mathematics teachers and to understand the advantages that the use of this application for educational purposes can provide for students. The positive evaluation of the digital education application DERSIGO by pre-service Mathematics teachers shows that such technology-based education tools can potentially play a valuable role in the education process. This study examined the views of Mathematics teacher candidates regarding the educational use of the paid application DERSİGO. The research was conducted with the participation of 27 Mathematics teacher candidates, who were provided with access codes to experience Mathematics lessons and the gamification process within the DERSİGO application. The data collected from the participants were obtained through a semi-structured student opinion form and analyzed using the content analysis method. According to the findings of the study, teacher candidates express that the educational use of DERSİGO can make Mathematics lessons more engaging and fun, increase student participation, teach lesson content through gamification, boost student motivation, enable assessment of student performance, and assist in reinforcing learned subjects. A significant portion of the teacher candidates states that the DERSİGO application can be effectively used in mathematics education, while some teacher candidates emphasize its suitability for non-mathematics verbal subjects. The research reveals that DERSİGO can offer students advantages such as increasing class participation, improving student interaction, reinforcing learning processes, and increasing student motivation. Based on the obtained findings, various recommendations are provided for researchers and educators
A Comparative Study on Critical Thinking Skills of ISEC and Non-ISEC Teachers in Institutions of Higher Education in the North of China
Get PDFViewed as one of the essential skills needed to succeed in the 21st Century, advancing student's critical thinking (CT) is a significant focus in higher education. This study utilized a non-experimental causal-comparative methodology with an explanatory mixed methods research design. The purpose of this study was to explore the status quo (current situation) of Chinese teachers’ (including ISEC and non-ISEC teachers) CT, as well as the perception, attitude, and practice of CT among them in institutions of higher education in the north of China. There were 102 participants took the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST). The results from the quantitative research showed the CT skills of Chinese teachers fell in the upper range of moderate level. There were no significant differences or relationships in CT skills for ISEC and non-ISEC teachers based on the variables: gender, professional rank, educational background, discipline taught, age, and years of teaching. Twelve participants were interviewed. The core phenomenon or theory emerged from the qualitative data: Chinese teachers advocated and supported CT instruction, but they had a varied and fragmented perception about CT. Although they held a positive attitude towards CT and CT instruction, they applied limited CT teaching strategies in their practice. All participants displayed a strong desire to participate in CT training programs. Language and Society in Mead and Schutz
Get PDFThe relationship between language and society has interested many scholars of various disciplines in the social sciences and communication studies. This article compared the viewpoints of two fundamental authors of the interpretive approach in sociology, Alfred Schutz – founder of phenomenological sociology, and George Herbert Mead – one of the founding fathers of the symbolic interactionism’s perspective, on the relationship between language and social interaction. The article first presents the theories of Mead and Schutz on the relationship between language and social interaction, then points out the similarities and the differences between these theories. Finally, the difficulties each theory encounters and how these difficulties are overcome is discussed. Although Mead’s and Schutz’s theories are complementary, the difficulties encountered in Mead's simplistic theory of communication are overcome in Schutz's phenomenological analyses of the everyday life world through the concepts of interpretative and expressive schemes, and of the relationship of We or the mutual tuning in relationship
Foreign Ownership and Corporate Dividend Policy in Cameroon
Get PDFThis article analyzes the relationship between foreign ownership and dividend policy in the Cameroonian context, based on a sample of 197 companies observed over the period 2015-2017. This relationship is estimated using simultaneous equations to account for endogeneity bias. The results show that foreign ownership negatively influences dividend policy, and vice versa. However, these bidirectional links are not linear, but they assume U-shape forms. That is, low levels of foreign ownership are associated with low dividends, while the dividend increases as foreign shares get higher. Similarly, companies paying low dividends attract few foreign shareholders. The latter increases their shareholding when the dividend payout is high. Furthermore, dividend policy is dynamic in Cameroonian companies, as the current dividend is determined by the previous year's
