The Destructive Effect of Corruption on Economic Growth in Mali : a Nonlinear Model Analysis

    Get PDF
A growing body of empirical work has raised awareness of the destructive effect of corruption on economic development, although no existing study has considered the threshold value at which corruption impedes economic growth. This study assesses the effect of corruption on economic growth by adopting a non-linear approach to determining the corruption threshold. By analyzing the effect of corruption on economic growth in Mali over the period 1988 to 2021, this study examines whether there is evidence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and corruption. The threshold effect of corruption is assessed using an augmented quadratic model. The results confirm the existence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between corruption and economic growth on the one hand and show the existence of a long-run relationship between these variables on the other hand, thus validating our initial hypothesis. Furthermore, the results show that economic growth peaks when the corruption perception index reaches 0.07 points. The main lessons to be drawn from these results are that below this threshold, corruption becomes a lubricant for economic growth, while above this threshold, it constitutes a brake on economic growth in Mali

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to determine the importance of learning English to find jobs in sectors such as banks, education, and private companies. It also shows the importance of finding a platform with a designed curriculum for those who are interested in working in this field to facilitate their integration to improve employment opportunities with limited duration or based on the challenges that might come out. A questionnaire was conducted on 408 workers with higher levels of education, English speakers, and non-speakers in Gaziantep, in Turkey. The researcher found that English Language learning has a very important role in finding better job opportunities in Turkey. However, the main challenges facing the learners, according to the results, are learner’s lack of confidence, teaching method, being with people who speak your mother tongue, limited learning environments, over-use of native language in the classroom, and inadequate learning materials. Difficulties such as time and cost are the least challenges facing them to learn English in the participants’ opinion. Lastly, as solutions to overcome the learning challenge, the education process should focus more on motivation, speaking, learning vocabulary, using communicative language teaching, and improving teaching methods, social networks, reading, and school. However, living abroad, free and private courses, grammar, university, platforms, and family environment are the least effective supports to overcome those challenges

The Distribution of Income among U.S. Self-Employed Farm Households: A Close Look Before and During COVID-19’s Recession

    Get PDF
This paper examines the distribution of ‘money’ income of self-employed farm households in the U.S. using multiple inequality measures and multi-year data from Current Population Survey. Special emphasis is given to 2016 and 2020, which portray total household income before and during the onset of the COVID-19’s recession. The two selected years, respectively, characterize low and high farm income years, with their likely divergent impact on the well-being of self-employed farm households. Using the Gini index measure of inequality, findings show that money income was just as unequally distributed in 2020, the year of the COVID-19’s recession, as in 2016. Adopted decomposition method of the Gini index showed income from off-farm wages and/or salaries, in comparison to the other components of total income, with the strongest equalizing marginal impact on the overall distribution of money income in 2016 and with a much lesser impact in 2020. Considering that off-farm income from wages and/or salaries is the dominant income source of self-employed farm households, macroeconomic factors are likely to continue to influence the distribution of income among self-employed farm households

    Get PDF
Intercultural competence is becoming necessary in all structures of life as our diversity grows and globalization continues to grow. Even in the field of business intercultural learning is equally vital domestically and internationally (Bennett, J. M. 2008). Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is a methodology in teaching and learning that continues to grow in use and can aid in filling this intercultural gap. The methodological COIL approach aids to building cultural competency and partnerships in the higher education community. Throughout this collaborative manuscript between three instructors at two universities, Nottingham Trent University (NTU) in the United Kingdom and University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) in the United States, discussions will be around the pedagogy of carrying out a COIL module and how COIL was completed in the Fall semester of 2021. Over the course of four weeks, NTU and UMD students worked together to complete key learning objectives of healthcare systems, alternative care, and COVID-19 response in the United Kingdom and the United States. NTU and UMD used technology such as Google My Maps, video recording presentations, and interview questions to further the learning around the key objectives. NTU and UMD each had separate final projects and grading rubrics for final grading and evaluation. Pre-and post-assessment data was collected to better understand student learning outcomes including, cultural learning and cross-cultural ambivalence within the COIL unit. The assessments also provided an overview of future considerations for the collaboration between future instructors in the COIL unit based on student feedback

The Narrative, Discourse and Terminology of the Western Balkans Online Media Reporting on the Russia-Ukraine War

    Get PDF
Reporting by various media on armed conflicts produce news about the events from both the frontlines and the country a war takes place. Given that reporting from war zones has changed and that many media outlets do not even send their journalists to cover the fighting on the ground but opt for citing news agencies, the social media, or the local media, we bear out that reporting from the Russian-Ukraine war constitutes a mixed journalism between that of war and peace. The narrative, discourse, and terminology used by the Western Balkans online media in Albanian, Serbian, and Macedonian, differ depending on the language and the country that the certain media operate. The content provided in the body of articles is less striking than of what appears in the headlines of the same news items, meaning that online media tend to prioritize sensationalism and that the reporting strategy in essence reduces the quality of the media narrative and discourse. The results of our research highlight the importance of telling between different types of conflict frames omnipresent in the online media reporting contexts
