Enhancing Team-Based Learning by Moderating FIRST-ADLX Framework inTeacher Professional Development
Over the past few decades, teacher professional development has increasingly focused on developing teachers’ professional skills in the use of TBL (team-based learning) in their classrooms, gaining new insights and perspectives, and enhancing their ability to meet the diverse needs of their students. Consequently, many studies have investigated the effectiveness of learner-centric approaches such as team-based learning, inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning, project-based learning, and others on learner engagement and knowledge acquisition. While such approaches have been found to motivate learners and improve learning outcomes, many teachers have struggled to create an impactful learner experience by following the recommended sequence alone. To address this issue, this paper proposes an integrated approach to designing and facilitating a learner experience using FIRST-ADLX (Focusing – Interacting – Reviewing – Sequencing – Transforming-Active Deep Learner eXperience) Framework to moderate a team-based learning session. The effectiveness of integrating team-based learning within FIRST-ADLX Framework in improving learner engagement, overall satisfaction, and knowledge retention is investigated through an auto-ethnographic research design (Lichtman, 2012; Méndez, 2013; Ellis & Bochner, 2000; Starr, 2010). Results indicate that FIRST-ADLX Framework effectively facilitates communication and collaboration among team members, supports the achievement of learning outcomes, and increases overall satisfaction and engagement. Therefore, using FIRST-ADLX Framework to moderate a learner-centric approach is an effective way to “develop and train teachers on how to understand, experience, practice and have a sustainable impact on learners” (Bahgat et al. 2020).and on the other hand to help teachers in several aspects of designing and facilitating a sustainable learning experience for their students
The Relationship of Mathematical Reasoning to Mathematics Achievement and Academic Excellence
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between mathematical reasoning and achievement in mathematics, and extend this to its correlation as a higher cognitive ability with various academic subjects in general, particularly across different levels of academic performance efficiency. The study employed a descriptive correlational approach with a sample of 106 twelfth-grade secondary school students. The sample was divided into three groups based on academic performance efficiency. The study sought to answer the following questions(1)What is the extent and direction of the correlation between mathematical reasoning as a higher cognitive qualitative ability, and achievement in mathematics as educational content? (2)To what extent does the extent and direction of this correlation vary between mathematical reasoning variables and achievement in mathematics across different levels of academic performance in this subject? (3)What is the extent and direction of the correlation between mathematical reasoning and achievement in different academic courses?(4)To what extent do the extent and direction of correlation relationships vary between mathematical reasoning variables and different academic courses across varying levels of academic performance in these courses? Naturally, these questions were addressed by verifying the validity of the following scientific hypotheses:Hypothesis1There is a strong correlation between mathematical reasoning (as a higher cognitive ability) and achievement in mathematics, as presented to fourth-grade secondary school students. Hypothesis2: The correlation between mathematical reasoning and achievement in mathematics varies in strength and weakness across different levels of academic performance efficiency in this subject.Hypothesis3:There is a strong correlation between the variable of mathematical reasoning and various academic subjects in general. However, the correlation is stronger between this ability and scientific subjects compared to subjects with linguistic or humanistic nature.Hypothesis4:The extent of correlation relationships (both strong and weak) between mathematical reasoning and different academic courses varies across different levels of academic achievement efficiency in general. The results of this study revealed the validation of all these hypotheses except for the third hypothesis, which was partially validated. The most significant findings from this study have highlighted a set of important indicators that shed light on the nature of non-cognitive factors behind academic excellence in general and specifically in mathematics, as presented in our context previously
How Constructivist Learning Impacts Secondary Girls’ STEM Career Interests
This is a quantitative study that examines how constructivist learning in a summer camp impacted middle school and high school girls’ STEM knowledge, self-efficacy, and ultimately, their interests in future STEM learning and growth. An online survey was used to collect information from thirty-one girls at the end of a five-week summer camp. The results are mostly confirmative of past studies that used student-centered project-based authentic STEM learning with significant gains in students’ understanding of STEM, self-efficacy, and interests in STEM for future development. The unique contribution of the study, though, is the finding that, when given the opportunity to engage in active learning and problem-solving, girls’ interest in STEM subjects could be substantially boosted; the constructivist learning environment along with their gains in STEM knowledge can compensate any insufficiency in self-efficacy in this regard. This study provides insight about the importance of instructional approach in STEM education
Box Jenkins ARMA Model for Forecasting Bangladesh's Remittance Inflow
This study uses Eviews software in order to determine the best Box-Jenkins ARMA model for forecasting the growth rate of remittances in Bangladesh by utilizing time series data from the year 1980 to 2022. In our study, we used the Augmented Dickey-Fuller Test (ADF Test) to check the stationarity of the time series data. This test shows that data is stationary at level 0, i.e., Remittance (0). By performing several selection criteria for the lowest SIGMASQ and the lowest value of AIC and BIC, we obtain ARMA (1, 1), which is the best model for forecasting remittances in Bangladesh. Diagnostic tests additionally demonstrate the stability and acceptability of the parsimonious model that has been given for remittance prediction in Bangladesh. The study's findings reportedly demonstrate that Bangladesh's remittance inflows are declining. The article makes the case that, in order to increase remittance inflows into Bangladesh, the country's emigration policy needs to be strengthened
Developing an Assessment Battery to Measure Exposure to Police Brutality on Social Media Among Black Adolescents
This study aims to investigate the impact of police brutality exposure on social media among Black adolescents, recognizing its profound influence on attitudes and perceptions. The research developed the PBE-SM self-report assessment battery through an iterative process, involving qualitative interviews and cognitive assessments with Black first-year college students. The battery comprises five instruments, each probing specific time frames to capture the dynamic nature of social media exposure. For each instrument, all ten items were submitted to an exploratory factor analysis, revealing distinct structures, and providing psychometric evidence of construct validity and the utility of a multifaceted approach in understanding how perceptions evolve over time. The study emphasizes the practical applications of PBE-SM for researchers, educators, and counselors. It facilitates real-time monitoring of Black adolescents' exposure, aiding counselors in recognizing periods of heightened exposure and guiding stress management. Educators can use the tool for positive social media integration in academic settings. While limited to Black college undergraduates, future research aims to establish external validity across diverse demographics. In conclusion, PBE-SM represents an innovative tool for comprehending and addressing the psychological well-being of Black adolescents amidst prevalent exposure to police brutality on social media
The Journey of Women in Disney Movies and Their Impact on Shaping Social Perceptions
Disney movies have long fascinated audiences with their fantastical narratives, lively characters, and imaginative landscapes. However, the representation of women in Disney movies was always through a patriarchal lens. This research investigates the portrayal of women characters in contemporary Disney movies Moana (2016) and Mulan (2020) and analyses how they differ from the traditional portrayal of women in Disney movies using the theoretical framework of postmodern feminism and patriarchy. The paper analyses how travel empowers these women and what significant changes it brings about in the development of their characters. The paper also explores the psyche of these women characters and how their journey inspires young adults, especially today’s women. The paper serves as a lens into society and the influence of media and other popular culture in the perceptions formed about women and how they are supposed to be
Political Campaigns’ Use of E-mail vs. Television Advertising
This research explores how political campaigns use e-mail and television advertising differently. The data consist of 267,675 television ad airings sponsored, and 2,164 e-mails sent, by the forty-seven U.S. Senate candidates who used both communication channels during the 2014 general election cycle. Major findings include that fundraising requests and get-out-the-vote messages were more commonly found in campaign e-mails than in television ads; that campaigns were more likely to use partisan appeals in their e-mails while they often used bipartisan appeals in their television ads; and that campaigns sometimes mentioned issues owned by the other party more frequently than their opponents did when using television ads whereas they tended to focus on issues owned by their party in their e-mails. Campaigns’ use of multiple communication channels within a single election cycle should be monitored more systematically and thoroughly
Social Media Personalities in Asia: Demographics, Platform Preferences, and Behavior Based Analysis
This study investigates social media personalities in Asia, shedding light on their demographics, platform preferences, and user behaviors across 16 countries. The findings reveal a significant predominance of younger users, highlighting the importance of targeting this demographic in marketing strategies. The study also underscores the pervasive influence of social media in daily life, with platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X (Twitter), WhatsApp, Telegram, and Snapchat widely adopted for various purposes in Asia. The study shows that different personality types (Approval Seeker, Changeling, Denier, Lurker, Peacock, Quizzer, Ranter, Ultra, Virgin, Social Butterfly, and Informer) exhibit distinct preferences for social media platforms, indicating the need for tailored marketing strategies. Furthermore, the correlation between countries of origin and social media personalities underscores cultural nuances and regional trends in usage. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for effectively engaging diverse audiences across the region. The study suggests practical implications for marketers to customize their strategies based on dominant personality types and platform preferences in each market, empowering them to make informed decisions. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into social media behavior in Asia, equipping marketers, policymakers, and researchers with the understanding and tools to navigate the evolving landscape of social media engagement. The dominance of the Lurker personality type in Asia emphasizes that ‘silent majorities’ also exist in the digital sphere as they exist in the real world. Future research could explore the motivations driving social media usage and personality traits among Asian users considering cultural influences. Despite valuable insights gained, limitations such as response bias should be considered
Review of Audience Gratification with Chinese Online Film Festivals
After COVID-19, cultural activities increasingly rely on online formats to engage audiences. Against this backdrop, online film festivals have emerged as a new subject of film festival research. The proliferation of online film festivals in China during this time has sparked intense debate, with both their emergence and future development being contentious issues. Throughout this process, the will of the audience plays a pivotal role in shaping their trajectory. To ensure the smooth operation and future development of online film festivals, a profound understanding of festival audiences needs to be sought. This study focuses on the audience, aiming to explore their gratification with Chinese online film festivals through a literature review, with the hope of providing insights for future prospects in the planning of online film festivals. Through the screening of databases including CNKI, Google Scholar, and Scopus, a total of 1,352 relevant articles were retrieved. After manual screening and exclusion by researchers, 105 articles relevant to the theme of this study were identified. Based on these articles, this paper synthesizes four types of audience gratification: content gratification, process gratification, social gratification, and technology gratification. Future research is recommended to further empirically investigate the conclusions drawn from this review
Pedagogy of Freedom: Van-Dijk’s Socio-Cognitive Discursive Analysis on Nadiem Makariem Endgame Podcast
Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology initiate Merdeka Belajar (Independent Learning) policy since 2020 to improve education quality. Education holds a crucial role in human capital development of nation to respond structural transformation challenges, global industrial revolution, and disruptive changes in many dimensions of human life. Indonesian education quality still needs to be improved, since the Indonesia 2018 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) rank in lower quartile compare with other 78 countries. Nadiem Makariem, the Education, Culture, Research and Technology minister, convey the discourse about Independent Learning through Endgame podcast series 113, hosted by Gita Wirjawan, an Indonesian investment banker, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and former Indonesian minister of trade. This study aims to analyse the podcast uses Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive approach to demystify ideology behind the policy through critical analysis of language, cognition, and social-cultural context, from macro (context) to micro (social cognition, ideology) level. Freire’s pedagogy of freedom and Bourdieu’s concept about social structure of educational system used as a framework. This study found that Independent Learning policy strive to break the social domination of banking education system that already practiced in Indonesian education and resulting in low quality of education that withheld the competitive index of Indonesian human capital. Symbolic violence and power in the education bureaucracy system hinder the implementation of the Independent Learning policy in Indonesian schools and universities, leading to resistance among stakeholders
