    Get PDF
Several recent studies have found that social media positively influences the online political participation behavior of youth. However, only a few studies have explored the political participation behavior of Chinese youth on specific social media, such as WeChat, the most widely used mobile social media in China. To bridge this gap, this study examines Chinese youths’ contact with WeChat and its subsequent impact on political participation. The study uses a questionnaire to collect data and uses the SPSS 25.0 version to analyse data. The findings show that: (1) Chinese youths' WeChat news contact positively affects their WeChat political participation; (2) Chinese youths' social capital positively affects their political trust; (3) social capital and political trust play a partially mediating role between youths' WeChat news contact and youths' WeChat political participation; (4) media literacy plays a moderating role between youth WeChat news contact and youth WeChat political participation. Implications and limitations of the findings are discussed

    Get PDF
Youth self-presentation represents the creative expression of personality, interests, and attitudes through the formation of an online identity on social media, which is an indispensable component of young people's lives nowadays. Just as Goffman's actor presents himself on stage in everyday life, people on social media have unique modes of expression that include filtering, editing, and selective sharing of content in order to present themselves in the best light and impress their target online audience. This sociological research aims to gain an insight into how young people present themselves to their online audience by examining why and how often they use and post on social media, as well as how they create and edit content on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok as the most popular social media. An online survey was used in 2023 to gather data from a sample of 283 young people in Split (Croatia), who were between the ages of 20 and 34. The study's findings indicate that young people follow posts and stories of others every day and that women spend more time both following and posting content on social media than men. In comparison with Facebook and TikTok, they prefer to use Instagram. Compared to men who use social media because of its popularity or in order to make new acquaintances, women use it for entertainment (Facebook) and to follow and create content (Instagram). At the same time, women are more inclined to use various options and tools when creating and editing content on social media

    Get PDF
The proliferation of mass media and online platforms has catalyzed the digital turn of business communication. This paper adopts an intercultural pragmatic perspective to explore the interpersonal functions of metapragmatic expressions (MPEs) in online negative review responses, an area that has received limited attention in earlier research, particularly with regard to the interpersonal dynamics in intercultural business settings. Based on 277 English negative reviews and responses gathered from TripAdvisor in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, this study found that agents use MPEs to manage rapport when responding to online negative reviews. More specifically, the interpersonal functions of MPEs are embodied in different move structures as they are used as common ground builders and salience adjusters. The present study advances our understanding of the MPEs in digital intercultural business communication and sheds light on metapragmatic awareness and intercultural pragmatic competence that are essential for managing business relations

The Influence of Speculation in Food and Commodities and the Impact of Futures Prices on Spot Prices- Evidence from two Behavioral Experiments

    Get PDF
This paper examines the impact of speculation on commodity and food futures on spot prices. Econometric studies contradict each other, coming not to a clear empirical outcome. Therefore, we take an alternative methodological approach with two behavioral experiments. The outcome shows, that tendencies in futures prices influence the price-setting behavior of market players in the spot market in the same direction. Since futures prices had no direct influence on profits and there were no other influences, futures prices must have influenced the expectations of market participants psychologically. Speculation with futures prices thus has an influence on spot prices via expectations. When speculation involves commodities and food in the future market serving crucial real economic functions it can lead to substantial misallocations and damages, why speculation should be regulated

    Get PDF
Youth suicide is a significant public health concern in the United States, and students from culturally minoritized groups may be at higher risk of suicidality and suicide ideation. As key stakeholders in comprehensive suicide prevention efforts, school mental health professionals need targeted professional development to help them address the mental health needs of all their students. The study aimed to pilot the Culturally Responsive Suicide Prevention in Schools (CRSPiS) professional development session and evaluate its impact on school mental health professionals’ beliefs about the influence of culture on suicidal thoughts, behaviors, communication, and response. A pre-and post-training design was used. Professionals attended the pilot of a structured 3-hour professional development session. Immediately after the training school mental health professionals who participated in the CRSPiS session reported stronger beliefs in the influence of culture on suicide ideation and response. Participants’ beliefs did not vary by previous hours of suicide training and years of experience. CRSPiS training may help improve professionals’ ability to respond to suicide and conduct assessments in culturally relevant ways

This study adopts a qualitative approach to explore the ethical challenges of AI faced by journalists. In-depth interviews were conducted with 14 journalists working in the newsroom of a government-affiliated channel, Al Mamlaka TV in Jordan. Data obtained from interviews conducted were analysed thematically. The results concluded that the main ethical challenges faced by journalists in the newsroom in adopting AI are data bias; privacy violations; and the absence of legislation and international regulations regarding the use of AI in journalism. The study concludes that journalists at Al Mamlaka TV adhere to the basics of Social Responsibility Theory through their critical adoption of AI in the newsroom
