The Guiding Role of Social Media in the Socialization of Celebrity Fans
Get PDFThis paper focuses on the role of social media in guiding the socialization of celebrity fans through qualitative research. Specifically, we explore fans’ choices of social media platforms and the navigating role of fan communities on fans’ personal identity, group identity and emotional labor. Through the analysis of social media platforms as well as in-depth interviews with fans, we find that the various features and functions of social media platforms have different impacts on the socialization of fans in China. At the same time, fan communities can also provide a place for fans to communicate and identify with each other, promote interaction and emotional exchange among them, and enhance the sense of belonging and pride. These findings have important theoretical and practical implications for understanding the role of social media in guiding the socialization of celebrity fans
Lies Have Short Legs: Brazilian Media Exposes Bolsonaro's Deceptive Claims Amidst Misinformation Surge
Get PDFIn an era marked by widespread misinformation and declining trust in institutions and journalism, the deceptive statements made by former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro have gained significant attention. However, it was only in the second year of his term, during the COVID-19 pandemic, that news outlets actively began to expose and denounce his false and misleading claims. This article presents a content analysis comparing press coverage of the following four pivotal moments in the Bolsonaro administration during the pandemic: his speech at the UN General Assembly in 2020, his national radio and TV address in March 2021, his speech to ambassadors in July 2022, and his interview with Jornal Nacional, the most-watched news program in Brazil, in August 2022. By examining articles and headlines from the country's three most prominent newspapers, including two leading fact-checking agencies, this study reveals a shift in media discourse with the term 'lie' being increasingly used. Our hypothesis is that journalism is striving to reclaim its role as a trustworthy institution

Preschool and Kindergarten Teachers’ Self-Reported Phonological Awareness Strategies and Challenges in Teaching English Learners
Get PDFThis study investigates the phonological awareness strategies and challenges of preschool and kindergarten teachers in teaching English learners (ELs). Using a mix method survey design, we analyzed 57 responses. Quantitatively, we examined teachers’ use of best practices established in the literature. Qualitatively, we explored the specific strategies, challenges, and tools teachers used in the classroom. The results showed that 80% of teachers reported providing direct phonological awareness instruction daily or almost every day. However, some preschool teachers used implicit phonological awareness and rarely incorporated blending and segmenting practices. Teachers encountered challenges including language and cultural barriers, the need for developmentally appropriate and engaging materials, and support from districts and parents. Teachers desired explicit lessons, culturally relevant materials, and comprehensive toolkits. The findings underscore the needs for tailored training and resources for early childhood educators and their ELs, aiming to bridge the gap between evidence-based literacy practices and classroom implementation

The Development of Chinese Opera during the First Seventeen Years (1949-1966)
Get PDFThis essay focuses on the policy on Chinese opera from 1949 to 1966. It first examines detailed policies, such as the three-reform policy, policy on repertoires, from the the two-pronged approach and three-parallel to Double Hundred, etc. Then points out that the development of Chinese opera in the first seventeen years had a far-reaching influence on contemporary opera. Chinese opera during this period had a high degree of unity in ideology, a high degree of organization in teamwork, and a high degree of standardization in art.In the end,I tried to make a conclusion,that is the general characteristics of the opera policy in the first seventeen years (1949-1966) are reflected in the following three aspects. Firstly, policy in this period has obvious historical and cultural characteristics. Secondly, the Party's guidance of the development of opera during this period was not always smooth, and there were repetitions in the opera policy and its implementation, with difficult explorations in some major opera policies. Thirdly, the Party's policy on Chinese opera has a deep influence than before
The Plight of Syrian Refugees in the United States: Between Indifference and Dehumanization
Get PDFForced or voluntary migration worldwide and the quest for a safer and better life has not always resulted from armed conflicts or any form of political, ethnic, or religious persecution. Natural disasters have often enticed waves of deprived people across sovereign national borders. The present study investigates the plight of Syrian refugees in the aftermath of the 2011 upheavals which shook the Arab World, not as much because it poses unprecedented humanitarian and political challenges, but principally because it laid bare the double standard policy pursued by certain Western governments scapegoating Arab/Muslim stocks as a lingering menace to their security. To reconfigure the boundaries of decent debate and break down taboos over such a controversial issue, the paper raises a number of questions with regard to the essence of humanitarian work and how, over the past few decades, it has been politicized by ruthless politicians and unscrupulous technocrats to determine the resettlement of displaced masses or the allocation of funds to international relief organizations based on national, religious, and even racial standards. It takes the United States as a case in point to show how, despite being the largest donor of humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees, it has resettled only a tiny fraction of such a group compared to poorer contiguous states. The paper posits, finally, to contribute survey-based argument to available literature which, to some degree, has not sufficiently explored the hypothetical connection between refugee flows and transnational terrorism to demonstrate, ultimately, that not every Arab/Muslim refugee is a terrorist-in-waiting
Before the Court and in the Press: Newspaper Coverage of Creationism and School Prayer Movements' Legal Framing
Get PDFDuring the last century, social movement organizations have mobilized around what role religion should play in school. These struggles have focused on teaching creationism and evolution in the science classroom and the appropriateness of school prayer and Bible reading in public schools. Court cases like Scopes and Engel are infamous in American history, while others are much less well-known. This project explores media coverage of social movements that do not engage in typical protest activity and instead choose to operate in more institutional contexts. This paper will begin by presenting the coverage patterns of each movement across the twentieth century, illustrating how the media's focus is primarily influenced by movements either initiating legal action, being compelled to appear in court, or reacting to judicial proceedings. Next, it will present a typology of coverage that these legal-based movements received. A movement's legal framing is carried in and through the media, and sometimes, the framing is all that is reflected in media attention, making this type of reporting so attractive to movement organizations. The legal constraints over framing and legitimate actors account for some of the media exposure, which was likely to be equitable in tone and quantity to both the creationism and school prayer movements. To understand media coverage of social movements, scholars must begin to account for the cycles and patterns of coverage likely to occur when a movement ends up in court
Development and Assessment of Review Clips by Disabled Students for a Teenage Soul Healing Program on the TikTok Platform
Get PDFThe purposes of this research were 1) to develop review clips by disabled students for a teenage soul healing program on the TikTok platform 2) to evaluate the quality of the review clips by disabled students 3) to evaluate the perception of the samples 4) to evaluate the satisfaction of the samples. The research tools included 1) the review clips by disabled students for the teenage soul healing program on the TikTok platform 2) the quality assessment form 3) the perception assessment form 4) the satisfaction assessment form. Data were collected from a sample group comprising 60 students chosen by a simple random sampling method from the Department of Educational Communications and Technology in the second semester of the 2023 academic who were exposed the review clips and who were willing to complete the questionnaire. The results were 4 review clips by disabled students using ADDIE Model. The evaluation by experts identified that content and media presentation quality assessment was at a very good level , while the samples’ perception and satisfaction were at the highest level
