Weekly Seasonality in Overnight Effects of the Stock Market
Get PDFThis paper provides a comprehensive study of the weekly seasonality of the overnight effect in US large-cap stocks and index exchange-traded funds (ETFs). We identify a distinct pattern: a statistically significant positive Monday-to-Tuesday and negative Friday-to-next-Monday overnight (close to next open) return in large-cap US equities and index ETFs. We find overnight effect exhibits statistically significant patterns depending on the day of the week. This paper focuses on the weekly seasonality of this effect, exploring how the overnight return patterns vary across the weekdays. A short-term trading model is built to buy these stocks and ETFs before the market close and sell at the opening of the next trading day, and skips Wednesday and/or Friday. This model outperforms the market in both bull and bear conditions with higher Sharpe ratio
Improve Student Understanding of Amortized Loans
Get PDFAmortized loans, such as mortgages and auto loans, are common real-world examples introduced in the first finance college course. Many students mistakenly believe that the monthly payments on an amortized loan should be larger than the monthly equivalent of the annual payments (the annual payment divided by 12) of the same loan. This paper mathematically demonstrates that the monthly payments must, in fact, be smaller than this monthly equivalent. Also, the paper shows a loanee does pay more interest with monthly payments. Furthermore, this paper presents an alternative approach to treat amortized loan payments as investment or an opportunity cost, thus improving student understanding of amortized loans and financial decision-making
Developing A Training Curriculum with Social Listening and Active Learning for Mid-Career Workers’ Entrepreneurial Skills
Get PDFThis study aimed to develop, implement, and evaluate a training curriculum that integrates social listening tools with active learning approaches to enhance the entrepreneurial skills of mid-career workers within the context of continuing and distance education. Employing a research and development (R&D) framework, the study was conducted in four phases. First, a needs assessment with 286 mid-career workers and 18 key informants identified entrepreneurial challenges, expectations, and learning preferences. Second, curriculum design was informed by a systematic literature review of international databases (Scopus, ERIC, and Project Muse) and validated by experts to ensure academic rigor and practical relevance. Third, pilot implementation with three participant groups (n = 9, 15, and 30) enabled iterative refinement. Finally, a summative evaluation with 30 participants tested curriculum effectiveness and reliability. Data collection tools included surveys, semi-structured interviews, achievement tests, curriculum evaluation forms, and satisfaction scales. Analyses employed descriptive statistics, dependent sample t-tests, E1/E2 efficiency indices, KR-20, and Cronbach’s alpha. Results showed statistically significant improvements (p < .001) in entrepreneurial knowledge, skills, and attitudes, with high efficiency and satisfaction (M = 4.63). By integrating digital technologies with active learning, this study contributes to distance education literature by providing a validated curriculum model that supports mid-career workers’ lifelong learning and sustainable workforce development
Digital Educational Mechanisms for the Formation of National and Regional Identity in a Technological Environment
Get PDFIn the current context of global digitalization of education, the formation of national and regional educational identities that integrate technological, cultural, and value-based dimensions has become a critical issue. The relevance of this study is determined by the growing need to align digital educational transformation with cultural heritage preservation and social cohesion within educational communities. This challenge is particularly significant for the European educational space as well as for Ukraine, which is pursuing a strategic course toward digital integration while maintaining its cultural identity. The purpose of the study is to identify key trends and mechanisms involved in the formation of educational identity under conditions of digital transformation, with the object of analysis being national and regional education systems that implement culturally oriented development strategies. The methodological framework is based on logical-analytical, comparative-institutional, and descriptive statistical approaches applied to international educational and statistical datasets. The results demonstrate a substantial expansion of digital integration in education alongside the strengthening of the cultural dimension of identity. The proportion of educational institutions implementing intercultural digital modules increased from 34 to 63 percent, while the educational autonomy index rose from 0.57 to 0.74. In countries with high levels of digital readiness, more than ninety percent of students participate in programs aimed at cultural self-realization, whereas in Ukraine digital initiatives primarily emphasize the development of national and cultural self-identification. Based on comparative trend analysis of aggregated international data, parallel developments were observed between the expansion of digital education initiatives and the reinforcement of cultural integration indicators, reflecting a descriptive alignment between technological development and socio-cultural cohesion without implying inferential statistical relationships. The practical significance of the study lies in the application of its findings to educational policy design, program modernization, and the integration of digital competencies with civic and cultural awareness
The Influence of the Modern Educational Environment on the Formation of Patriotic Consciousness in Preschool Children
Get PDFThe relevance of studyingpatriotic education in preschool children is driven by the specificity of modern social conditions, particularly the critical circumstances the country faces. Additionally, this issue remains insufficiently covered in theoretical sources. The aim of this article is to determine the effectiveness of modern multimedia technologies in shaping the patriotic self-awareness of preschoolers. A formative experiment was conducted to examine the impact of modern informational aspects of the educational environment on the effectiveness of patriotic education in preschoolers. Supplementary methods, such as interviews and observations, were employed. The control group comprised 75 children, and the experimental group includes 80 preschoolers. The quantitative composition of the samples was determined according to the algorithm for calculating statistical power using the G*Power software package. To test the experimental effect, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Student's t-test, and Cohen's d-test were used. The results of the formative experiment indicate the effectiveness of modern multimedia technologies in fostering patriotic consciousness among preschoolers in today's educational environment. Notably, high indicators of the cognitive component of patriotic consciousness increased in 32.5% of children, high indicators of the emotional component rose by 25%, and the high level of the activity criterion grew by 22.5%. It was found that the most pronounced positive dynamics occurred in the emotional and activity components of patriotic consciousness. At the same time, the formation of ideas about patriotic and state-related objects and phenomena does not significantly depend on the format of the program format. The study revealedan established set of knowledge about the state and patriotic aspects is combined with unstable patriotic feelings and a weak activity orientation. The results of the experimental study provide a foundation for the effective use of multimedia technologies in the educational process of preschoolers. Furthermore, the obtained data create conditions for the development of children's patriotism. Future research should focus on developing standardizedmethods for diagnosing the components of patriotic consciousness in preschool children
Spirituality, Religiousness, and Mental Health: A Literature Review of Religion's Impact in Mental Health
Get PDFReligious and spiritual involvement (R/S) plays a significant role in the mental health of many Americans, yet the nature of this relationship remains complex. Current empirical evidence from systematic reviews, longitudinal studies, and clinical trials demonstrates predominantly protective effects of R/S across major psychiatric disorders, with higher religious engagement generally associated with reduced depression and substance use, enhanced resilience following trauma, and improved outcomes in several other conditions. However, the relationship proves notably bidirectional, as religious struggle, negative religious coping, and certain doctrinal beliefs can exacerbate symptoms, particularly in obsessive-compulsive disorder through scrupulosity and in depression when spiritual conflicts arise. The magnitude of protective effects remains modest, with considerable variation across populations, cultural contexts, and measurement approaches. For anxiety disorders, findings remain inconsistent, with approximately half of studies showing benefits while others report null or negative effects. Substance use disorders show the most robust inverse relationship with R/S, while eating disorders and personality disorders demonstrate limited and conflicting evidence. Understanding these complex patterns has significant implications for clinical practice, supporting the integration of spiritual assessment and religiously informed interventions into mental health care while highlighting the critical need to distinguish adaptive from maladaptive religious cognitions. Future research must address fundamental gaps including the lack of mechanistic understanding, geographic bias toward American populations, and the need for validated assessment tools that can capture the multidimensional nature of religious experience and its varied impacts on psychological well-being
Building Excellence in Ideological and Political Education: Evidence from China's National First-Class Undergraduate Courses
Get PDFThis study analyzes 210 outstanding teachers from China’s National First-Class Undergraduate Courses to identify characteristics and development pathways for excellence in ideological-political education. Empirical data reveals key group features: balanced gender distribution (52.4% female), senior-dominated age structure (89.9% aged 41–60), and doctoral prevalence (78.8%). Regional disparities show Eastern/Northern China accounting for 50.5% of faculty, while disciplinary backgrounds concentrate in Law (59.5%), Philosophy (15.0%), and History (8.5%). Teaching practices emphasize team instruction (94.3%) and high social-practical course representation (11.4%). Research excellence is evidenced by 48.6% securing National Social Science Foundation grants and 70% publishing >5 high-level papers. Critical challenges include succession risks (only 6.2% under age 40), regional imbalances, and limited international exposure (13.8%). To address these, we propose a five-path framework: (1) youth capacity building, (2) Western-region equity policies, (3) integrated training systems, (4) expanded teaching recognition, and (5) research-teaching synergy. Successful implementation requires scaling competitive teaching exhibitions, strengthening Marxist theory doctoral pipelines, and leveraging National Key Marxist Colleges’ demonstration effects. These strategies advance curriculum-centered faculty development for new-era ideological education aligned with China’s higher education modernization goals
Digital Identity Building and Self-Presentation on SMS Case Study of Content Creators in the Kingdom of Bahrain
Get PDFThe objective of this study, "Digital Identity Building and Self-presentation on SMS - Case Study of Content Creators in the Kingdom of Bahrain," is to determine how digital identity is constructed and formed through social media. Additionally, it seeks to investigate the role of social media in shaping digital identity and self-presentation, as well as the tactics employed by content creators to achieve this objective through social media. The semi-structured interview is used as a data collection tool for the research sample, comprising eleven content creators in the Kingdom of Bahrain (n = 11). The study adopted a qualitative approach. The research demonstrated the importance of content creators presenting their authentic selves without the use of fabricated identities to be readily accepted by their community of followers. The people who created the content also agreed that social media is the most effective approach to developing a digital identity. They said that the ideal platform to use depends on the message they want to send and the audience they want to reach. Additionally, digital identity and self-presentation through social media are entirely dependent on spontaneity and honesty. Some of them are attempting to increase their likes and views, even if it means submitting content that contradicts their own beliefs. In the digital ecosystem, identity is established through personal experiences and education. The essential components of this process are spontaneity and respect for the values shared within society
Development Levels Shaping Global Migration Trends
Get PDFAccording to estimates by the United Nations' International Organization for Migration, in 2020 the global count of international migrants reached 281 million, nearly doubling the estimate from 1990. While a significant portion of emigration can be attributed to wars and conflicts, less developed countries have witnessed a surge in outward migration over the past few decades, extending beyond forced emigration. Among these migrants there is a considerable number of young, skilled, and educated individuals, whose departure has unfortunate effects on their countries of origin, impacting economic progress and demographics. The level of country development significantly influences migration, as migrants often move from less developed to more developed countries in search of better living conditions and more opportunities.This paper aims to identify the primary determinants of global migration movement between years 1990 and 2022, with a focus on evaluating the impact of country development level disparities on these flows. According to our static and dynamic estimation results the level of development is a significant driver of emigration while higher GDP per capita is associated with lower net emigration. These results imply that policies aimed at reducing migration pressures should focus on fostering economic development and increasing GDP per capita in low-income countries
Skill Complementarities and Urban Labor Sorting: Evidence from Chinese Cities
Get PDFThe spatial sorting of skilled labor is the key to the economic growth of cities, while skill complementarity serves as an important underlying mechanism for its formation. This study examines how skill complementarities in production influence the equilibrium allocation of labor across urban areas. We differentiate between extreme-skill complementarity, which leads to thicker-tailed skill distributions in large cities, and top-skill complementarity, which generates first-order stochastic dominance. Analyzing wage and housing price data from the 2013 CHIP survey and the CEIC database, we find robust evidence that large cities in China attract a disproportionate share of both high-skilled and low-skilled workers, while average skill levels remain unchanged across city sizes. These findings highlight the importance of providing valuable insights for developing countries to address urban development inequalities and enhance labor market efficiency
