Message from the Editor

Thanks to the Engineering Design Graphics Division’s membership, the Engineering 
Design Graphics Journal continues to publish a sufficient number of manuscripts, and it 
continues to be a viable means for members of the Division and other readers to stay 
current with news of the Division and leading practices and trends in graphics 
education. I would, however, like to encourage the Division and its members and other 
readers to continue reaching out to colleagues, especially those who may not 
necessarily be Division members, and encourage them to submit their manuscripts to 
the Journal for publication. 
 
The effect we should be attempting to achieve is the pursuit of a broader number of 
ways for communicating visually. I think we all recognize that others possess different 
ways of looking at problems, different skill sets, and many different ways of approaching 
problems. With the assistance of others’ insight we can achieve a synergy that we 
would otherwise not be able to achieve on communicating visually. 
 
While I’m on the submission bandwagon and within the context of the aforementioned, 
let’s help our colleagues submit their manuscripts. Recall that the submission process 
requires us to LOG IN—see Figure 1.

Logging in however requires one be a site user. If one is not a site user, they must 
REGISTER with this site—see Figure 1. 
 
After registering as a site user and logging in, we can begin the submission process by 
clicking on USER HOME—see Figure 2, and then Author > START A NEW 
SUBMISSION. The Section in which all new feature article manuscripts are submitted is 
Articles—see Figure 2.

Finally, while the Journal use to publish EDGD Mid-Year Conference papers, we no 
longer do so because the papers are available through the Division’s website—see 
http://edgd.asee.org/conferences/proceedings.htm. Moreover, the publication of 
conference papers in the Journal now distorts what is being done and can result in 
copyright violations—see http://www.apa.org/pubs/authors/openletter.pdf.  
 
However, because conference papers are more often than not considered to be reports 
on the current status of projects or other works in progress, they are considered 
semiformal means of disseminating findings. The formal means include dissemination in 
journals and other periodicals and books and suggests that projects and other works 
are complete. So, if the status of projects and other works in progress was presented at 
a Mid-Year Conference or any other conference, and the work is now complete, you’re 
encouraged to present and share your findings by means of the Journal.

For the past three years I have served as the Associate Editor of the Engineering 
Design Graphics Journal and I am excited to be transitioning into my new role as Editor. 
I am pleased to present my first issue in this new capacity which contains two articles. 
 
Karl Hurn and Ian Storer of Loughborough University, present a pilot project that they 
have undertaken with industrial design postgraduate students in which they use mashed 
aesthetics to improve the quality of designs early in the idea generation phase of the 
design process.   
 
Riccardo Metraglia, Valerio Villa, Gabriele Baronio, and Riccardo Adamini of the 
University of Brescia, present the results of their investigation on the influence of prior 
graphics experience on the self-efficacy and performance of first-year engineering 
students in an introductory engineering graphics course. 
 
I would like to thank all the reviewers as they take time to carefully consider each 
submitted manuscript and provide thoughtful feedback to the authors.  I wish to thank 
the members of the Engineering Design Graphics Division for their support and 
guidance during my transition to editor and I especially wish to thank Bob Chin and

Election Results 
 
According to the Division by-laws (see http://edgd.asee.org/aboutus/edgdbylaws.htm), 
the chair of the Elections Committee shall transmit the results of the election to the 
Chair of the Division.  The Chair shall inform each candidate (including those not 
elected) of the results of the election for his office and shall transmit the names of the 
newly-elected officers to the Editor of the Journal for publication in the Spring issue of 
the Journal.  The chair of the Elections Committee shall report the results of the election 
to the Division at the annual business meeting.  The results for the most recent election 
are as follows: 
 
For Vice-Chair:  Robert A. Chin 
 
Robert A. ”Bob” Chin is a member of the Department of 
Technology Systems faculty, College of Engineering and 
Technology, East Carolina University, where he has taught since 
1986. He just completed his second term as the director of 
publications for the Engineering Design Graphics Division and as 
the Engineering Design Graphics Journal editor. Chin has also 
served as the Engineering Design Graphics Division’s annual and 
mid-year conference program chair, and he has served as a 
review board member for several journals including the EDGJ. He 
has been a program chair for the Southeastern Section and has 
served as the Engineering Design Graphics Division’s vice chair 
and chair and as the Instructional Unit’s secretary, vice chair, and 
chair. His ongoing involvement with ASEE has focused primarily on annual conference 
paper presentation themes associated with the Engineering Design Graphics, the 
Engineering Technology, and the New Engineering Educators Divisions and their 
education and instructional agendas. 
 
For Director of Programs:  Theodore Branoff 
 
Theodore Branoff, Ph.D. is a professor and chair of the 
Department of Technology at Illinois State University. He taught 
engineering graphics, descriptive geometry, and constraint-based 
solid modeling courses at North Carolina State University for 28 
years before moving to Illinois State University. Dr. Branoff was 
previously employed with Measurements Group, Inc. as a 
draftsman and with Siemens, Switchgear Division as a 
specifications draftsperson. Along with teaching courses in 
engineering graphics, he has conducted CAD and geometric 
dimensioning & tolerancing workshops for both high school 
teachers and industry. He has also authored textbook chapters on

conventional tolerancing and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and authored a 
textbook on interpreting engineering drawings. 
  
Dr. Branoff is currently a member of the Engineering Design Graphics Division of the 
American Society for Engineering Education; the Association of Technology, 
Management and Applied Engineering; the International Technology and Engineering 
Educators Association; the International Society for Geometry and Graphics; and 
Epsilon Pi Tau. He has served as Chair, Vice-Chair, Director of Programs, and Director 
of Professional & Technical Committees for the EDGD and as Co-Editor of 
the Engineering Design Graphics Journal. In addition, he served as president of the 
International Society for Geometry & Graphics from 2009-2012. In 2013 he was elected 
into the Academy of Fellows of the American Society for Engineering Education, and in 
2014 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Engineering Design 
Graphics Division of ASEE. In April of 2015 Dr. Branoff received the Orthogonal Medal 
for distinguished service in graphic science from the Technology, Engineering & Design 
Education faculty at North Carolina State University. 
 
For Director of Membership: Diarmaid Lane 
 
Diarmaid Lane received his B. Tech (Ed.) and Ph.D. in 
Technology Education from the University of Limerick in 2008 and 
2011 respectively.  He spent six years in the metal fabrication 
industry developing engineering craft based skills prior to 
pursuing his studies in technology education.  He currently holds 
a faculty position at the University of Limerick where he teaches 
engineering graphics courses on undergraduate and 
postgraduate programs in technology teacher education.   
 
Diarmaid has acted as program chair for both the 67th and 70th 
MidYear Conferences for the Engineering Design Graphics 
Division.  He was been awarded the EDGD Chair’s Award in 2010 and 2011, and the 
Oppenheimer Award in 2012 and 2014.  His research interests are in the development of 
spatial cognition and graphical communication skills through freehand sketching.   
 
As membership officer in EDGD, his goal will be to further investigate the future 
direction of the membership.  He will also reach out to researchers in other disciplines to 
become involved in the division by encouraging the development of working 
partnerships and ultimately further strengthen the role of engineering graphics 
educators within the engineering education community and beyond.

Message from the Chair

Greetings EDGD family!  Being an active member of this division is one of the things I 
cherish.  The first thing I think of when planning my ASEE Annual or EDGD Midyear 
conference attendance is the EDGD members I will get to see, converse with, and have 
fun with.  The conferences spark ideas and rejuvenate me professionally, but the EDGD 
camaraderie is what I most look forward to. 
 
We had a wonderful Midyear meeting at Daniel Webster College this past October 
thanks to the superb planning of Jennifer McInnis with the help of Tim Kostar.  The 
theme of the conference was “Digital Animation in Engineering” and Dennis Lieu, 
recipient of the Oppenheimer Award for the Midyear meeting, showed some remarkable 
examples of student animations.  Special thanks go to Holly Ault, Judy Birchman, and 
Nick Bertozzi for their help in planning the conference.  Nick brought Jen as a student to 
the 63rd Midyear meeting and then encouraged her to chair the 71st Midyear. Holly 
recruited Jen to complete her PhD at WPI and provided invaluable help in the 
conference planning.  Holly’s husband has also been roped into the EDGD family by 
leading conference-related golf outings and serving a key role at our Midyear banquets.   
Judy is officially retired from her university position, but still faithfully contributes to our 
division by serving as program chair for midyear meetings, designing the EDGD banner 
displayed outside EDGD meeting rooms at the annual conference, and contributing in 
other manners.  Jen, Nick, Judy, and Holly are great examples of how our EDGD family 
grows, works together, and supports and encourages each other.    
 
I want to congratulate and thank the 2016 Distinguish Service Award recipient, Bob 
Chin, for his contributions to the division.  Bob was the Director of Publications for six 
years, is the current Vice Chair of the Division, and has served the division in a variety 
of roles over the years.  His acceptance speech for the award is included in this journal.

In her article, “Coordinating Mind and Hand: The Importance 
of Manual Drawing and Descriptive Geometry Instruction in a 
CAD-Oriented Engineering Design Graphics Class,” the author, 
Diana Bairaktarova, recommends that instruction in descriptive 
geometry and manual drawing should be included in undergraduate 
engineering curricula. With advances in technology, it is too easy to 
simply jump onto the computer and skip over the manual steps of 
sketching. There are many advantages of sketching by hand, but 
for me, the biggest advantage of hand sketching is that it provides 
me time to think about the problem I am working on and to explore 
a variety of possible solutions. I find that if I just jump onto the 
computer, I explore fewer alternatives.  
Another practice that is being lost due to technological advances 
is taking notes by hand. My students rarely take notes in class or 
on pre-lesson materials. All too often when I say, “You’ll want to 
write this down” or “this will be on the exam,” I see students pull 
out their phones to take a picture of the information or they type 
the information verbatim onto their laptop. This past semester, I 
made an extra effort to help my students take notes on their pre-
lesson materials that consists of a combination of videos and 
readings, with mixed success. For the first two weeks of class, I 
devoted the first 10 minutes of each class period to a note review 
where students compared their notes with their neighbors. Another 
class period early in the semester I gave students credit if they 
showed me the notes they took on that day’s pre-lesson material.  
Additionally, I allowed students to use the notes they took on short 
readiness assessment quizzes, which I gave almost every class 
period. While a number of students took notes and continued to do 
so throughout the semester, many did not after the first couple of 
weeks of class. Somehow, we need to help train and encourage our 
students to take the extra time to sketch and take notes by hand to 
help them connect their hand and mind.

Thanks our immediate past chair, Bob for leading our bylaws revision. The re-
vised version after the Executive Committee meeting will be presented to the
