    Dear Members:   Having recently attended the Mid-Year meeting, I was reminded of how important it is to interact with my peers in the division.  Often times, as educators, we find ourselves facing two extreme viewpoints.  on the one hand, we have chosen a profession which does not receive the respect it deserves (... those who can't - teach.)  On the other hand, we constantly strive to embellish our promotion document to impress upon our peers and administrators that we are both competent and creative in our chosen discipline.  It is often stressful to function at our best under these circumstances.   However, when I attend a professional meeting such as the Mid-Year, I always come back with a new appreciation for those who teach in our discipline as well as new teaching methods to ponder.  These meetings provide a chance to show our support and respect for each other and our discipline.  It is a chance to share your insights with people who care and express your support to those presenting new ideas.   I would encourage us all to show each other the respect and support we sometimes lack from other sources.  Take the time to mentor a new faculty member, support a colleague in his or her endeavors or share your experiences with your peers.  You will find it to be a rewarding experience.   Along this line of thinking, the division has decided to create two new awards for tis members.  The "Chair's Award" will be presented at the Annual ASEE meeting for the best paper and presentations.  The "Editor's Award" will be presented for the best paper for the previous volume of the EDGD Journal.  Watch future issues of the journal for the specific details about these awards.   Hope you like the new look of the journal

    Dear Members:   Last week, CNN was doing a story about the World Wide Web and at the end of the story posed an interesting question —Are we putting things on the internet because we should or because we can?  After all, the great thing about the web is that anybody can put just about anything out there for the world to see.  The bad thing about the web is that anybody can put just about anything out there for the world to see!   For those of us in education, it is a mixed blessing.  Most of us rushed to learn about this new tool and were encouraged to embrace it as a means of reaching our students, peers and colleagues.  Course supervisors rushed to place their course syllabus, lecture notes, assignments, schedule and anything else available on their web site.  We struggled to learn the necessary codes to make our course site look good and offer solid information.   But just like everything else that comes along, maybe it's time to step back and look at it more objectively.  What is really appropriate and what just adds to the clutter that is growing daily?   We must also consider the broader issues like copyright concerns, distance learning and site management.  I would be interested in hearing from those of you in the Division about your concerns, advice you have to offer and problems you have encountered with the web.  Send me your thoughts for the "Letters" section.   Speaking of web sites, the Division and Journal sites have been redesigned.  I'd like to thank Marilyn Moore, one of our Technical Graphics students here at Purdue, for the great job that she did.  The new address is listed on the calendar page.   Hopefully, we can expand and update over the next year.  We still hope to get some of the Division history out there but for now Marilyn created a graphic collage that highlights the history (also used on the cover of this issue.)  She's still working on the 30-40's and would like input on what you think the next decade will bring

    One of the issues that we have heard from past chairs is the problem of decreasing membership.  We have discussed why we are losing members and what we can do to increase our numbers.  One avenue has been to look at the community colleges and encourage those faculty to join our ranks.   As Chair, I would like to address a different yet related problem.  That problem is the diminishing number of articles submitted and deemed acceptable for the Engineering Design Graphics Journal.  The Engineering Design Graphics Journal is one of the oldest continuing ASEE division publications.  Our earlier members saw the importance of having a quality publication which had Engineering Graphics as its forum.  Since the early 1980's, the Journal has been a refereed publication with a distinguished panel of reviewers.  Unfortunately, like our membership, submission to the Journal has begun to lag.  We are getting fewer articles submitted to the Journal and of those many are rejected for a variety of reasons.   Just as it is time to expand our membership, it is time to expand our graphics horizons.  We must accept new aspects of graphics, new teaching methods, and new technologies for using and preparing graphics.  These might include multimedia, hypermedia, digital color, and simulations as well as descriptive geometry, CAD< and other traditional engineering graphics topics.   Judy Birchman, Director of Publications for the Engineering Design Graphics Division and editor of the Journal, has proposed the addition of a New Technology for the EDG Journal.  As with all other articles published in the Journal, the members of the EDGJ Review Board will review the technology articles.  We expect these articles to uphold the same high standards as all other published articles.   BUT... we will ask the reviewers to broaden their scope of who our readership might be.  This is critical, although it is rather like the chicken or the egg enigma.  If we continue to maintain a rigid narrow scope and vision of what topics might be of interest to our readers then we are in effect limiting our readership to those who are interested in the traditional version of engineering graphics.  We need to expand our vision and our scope to include new graphic technologies that we can use in our graphics classes and/or methods that we can apply to our classes.  Just as in the past, not all of us have been totally enthralled or interested in a paper that was full of formulas, not everyone will have the same enthusiasm for some of the new technology graphics.  However, we can still provide a forum for both types of papers and both types of readers.  The inclusion of these different topics can benefit the division twofold.  First, we will add new and informative topics to the Journal, and second, we might find new contributors and possibly future members who will have much to offer the division.   The Engineering Design Graphics Journal is a publication and a tradition that we should be proud of.  When Gary Bertoline was chair he called upon the membership to do all they can to see that we are a viable organization 50 years from now.  My hope is that along with the organization, we will also continue to have a thriving journal in the year 2050

    Message from the Editor - Interdisciplinary Visualization: The Search for Connectivity

    Visualization through imagery has been a method of communicating both abstract and concrete information since the beginning of time. The invention of computer graphics is one of the most signi? cant discoveries in visualization. Applying visualization to a variety of disciplines has expanded its value. &nbsp; The interdisciplinary nature of graphics has made our Journal more than just engineering design graphics. Our research has expanded into discovering how people learn using computer graphics. Our research has explored the interplay of visualization and interaction for domains such as science, humanities, engineering, and mathematics, using 2D and 3D computer tools. We have moved from hand-drawn sketching for drafting to quantitative evaluations and models of human-computer interaction. We have embraced not only a better understanding of spatial computer input, but of human behavior. In this issue of the Engineering Design Graphics Journal we have three articles presenting research on visualization applied to interior design, geometry, and psychology. &nbsp; The first article in our Journal &ndash;&ndash; Rethinking Design Process: Using 3D Digital Models as an Interface in Collaborative Session &ndash;&ndash; is a pilot study conducted by Professor Suing Ding, incorporating a real-world learning experience in a university interior design classroom. She presented an innovative alternative design process using 3D digital models as a part of the learning process. The students in her class not only learned how to use 3D AutoCAD, but experienced collaborative session feedback, and traditional versus alternative space planning. &nbsp; Professor Kevin L. Devine of Illinois State University is one of our new members of the Engineering Design Graphics Division. His article &ndash;&ndash; Using a Parametric Solid Modeler as an Instructional Tool to Teach High School Geometry&nbsp; &ndash;&ndash; was selected as The Editor&rsquo;s Award for its innovative approach using computer graphics technology to teach mathematics to high school students. His scientific study inspires us to continue to explore applying computer graphics technology as a conduit of interdisciplinary teaching and learning. This study builds a foundation of learning research using a parametric solid modeler to teach the mathematical principles of areas and volumes of solids. &nbsp; Spatial ability research since the late 1800&rsquo;s is eloquently summarized in the third article &ndash;&ndash; Dr. James Mohler&rsquo;s A Review of Spatial Ability Research. What is unique about his study is how psychology is tightly coupled with the concept of spatial ability throughout history. Years ago an article on psychology and spatial ability would have never made it into our Journal. Why now? &nbsp; To be successful in the future, the content of our Journal must grow with the times. We need visionary mindsets, creative thinking, a brazos abiertos (open arms) approach. We need to continue to search for connectivity. &nbsp; So there you have it&hellip; geometry, interior design, AND psychology&hellip; all intertwined with the common denominator of visualization and graphics. Here&rsquo;s to future collaboration and interdisciplinary research and applications ... &nbsp; -- La Verne Abe Harri

    Evolving Technical Graphics in the High Schools: A New Curriculum in Scientific Visualization

    A new curriculum, Scientific Visualization, is being taught by high school technical graphics and science teachers for the first time in the Fall of 1997.  This curriculum reflects a broadening application of computer graphics techniques in the workplace and represents a rich area for technical graphics teachers at all levels of education to be involved in.  The goal of the two-course sequence at the high school level is to give students expertise in manipulating both geometry and the visual characteristics of geometry, such as color and texture.  These visual elements are used to construct 2-D and 3-D graphic images which support the understanding of scientific and technical principles.  These courses are meant to complement rather than replace more mainstream technical graphics courses in architectural and mechanical graphics.  The proposed student populations taking the scientific visualization courses are not only the traditional vocational track students, but also pre-college students planning on studying in scientific, engineering, and technical fields.  Work is underway developing an extensive set of support materials and sample problems for use in the newly developed curriculum.  Implications for teaching technical graphics in higher education will be discussed in this paper, as well as the impact this type of curriculum may have on colleges and universities with future students having gone through this type of course and training
