Tiny Yet Impactful Clues to Unlocking Cosmic Mysteries (Free Astronomy Public Lectures)
Have you ever imagined that something tiny in the universe could significantly impact its evolution and reveal hidden cosmic phenomena?
The Mystery of Neutrinos:
A tiny particle called neutrino can do it! Neutrinos are almost massless, neutrally charged particles that hardly interact with other matter, making them incredibly difficult to detect. However, if we succeed, they can reveal what happens in the Sun’s core, act as a new supernova alarm, prove the existence of dark matter, and shed light on the early universe. This lecture will explore the role of neutrinos in the universe and some of the innovative ways to detect them.
The Power of Pulsars:
Another tiny but fascinating object in the universe is neutron stars. Composed mostly of neutrons, these stars can emit periodic radio waves and are known as pulsars. Pulsars can spin up to 1000 times per second, earning them the nickname “cosmic lighthouses.” Their periodic emissions can be studied to detect tiny ripples in spacetime known as gravitational waves, which result from distant cosmic explosions. Discover how pulsars form a Galactic-scale detector for low-frequency gravitational waves.
Speakers:
PhD students Pratyasha Gitika and Ni Putu Audita Placida Emas share their expertise on these fascinating topics, blending theoretical insights with the latest advancements in research
Episode 6: Strengthening Financial Wellbeing in Jobs-Focused Social Enterprises
In this episode, we explore a groundbreaking three-year financial wellbeing project, led by Whitebox Enterprises and funded by the Ecstra Foundation. This initiative is the first bespoke financial wellbeing program designed specifically for, and with, jobs-focused social enterprises, helping employees build confidence, skills, and behaviours around money management.
Joining the conversation are Kelly Taylor, National Program Manager at White Box Enterprises, and Dr. Chris Dembek, Senior Lecturer & Researcher at CSI Swinburne, who has been leading the evaluation of the project to date.
Kelly and Chris share key insights from the latest evaluation, discuss the impact on participants, and reflect on the broader impacts for those involved in the project.
Tune in to learn about the power of co-design, peer learning, and wrap-around support models in improving financial wellbeing in jobs-focussed social enterprise, as well as what’s next for this exciting project.
We hope you enjoy this discussion, and thanks for listening
Developing a Social Connection Toolkit for Residential Aged Care
Presented by the Social Innovation Research Institute at Swinburne.
Social isolation in residential aged care (RAC) is associated with depression, self-harm, cognitive decline and reduced physical and mental health. Helping people to be socially connected is a growing priority.
The Social Connection Toolkit, co-designed with RAC residents and staff, has been implemented and evaluated in four residential aged care settings in Victoria and NSW. This Toolkit aims to address the high risk of social isolation among older people in residential aged care.
Join us for the launch of the Social Connection Toolkit for Residential Aged Care. This session will showcase the findings from our project and provide an in-depth look at the evaluation results from the perspectives of residents, direct care staff, and lifestyle staff.
The Social Connection Toolkit includes:
-A set of conversational questions to facilitate interactions between staff and residents.
-A comprehensive guide and e-learning modules for staff.
-A digital data collection interface
