Listening Initiative exhibition
The Listening Initiative Exhibition brings together eight researchers from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak (SUTS) and Swinburne University of Technology Hawthorn (SUT), who have co-produced six projects exploring Extended Reality (XR), cinematic VR, mobile storytelling, and photography over the last two years. Featuring PhD projects and research in the form of non-traditional research outputs, the interdisciplinary research teams collaborated with the Dayak, Melanau, and local communities in Sarawak to bring people and technology together, using storytelling as the interface.
As the inaugural showcase of Non-Traditional Research Outputs (NTROs) at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, the exhibition demonstrates how creative practice research generates original, rigorous, and impact-driven knowledge.
The Listening Initiative is an ongoing project developed by Creative Media for Social Change at SUTS, Centre for Transformative Media Technologies (CTMT), Swinburne Documentary Research Group (SDRG) in the School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education at SUT Australia, the Centre for Innovative Society (CIS) of the School of Research, School of Design and Arts of the Faculty of Business, Design and Arts, at SUTS with support from the Melbourne-Sarawak Collaborative Research Grant Scheme.
The research is led by Associate Professor Dr Max Schleser, the late Ts. Ts. Augustus Raymond Segar, Dr Prof. Ida Fatimawati Adi Badiozaman, Wilson Suai Moses, and carried out by an interdisciplinary team comprising sudang johnny , Denby Weller, Michael Lee Wei Chen, and Brandy Lau. Together, the eight researchers represent cross-campus collaboration between Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak and Swinburne University of Technology Melbourne. The projects encompass academic-led creative practice research, PhD-related research outputs, and co-produced Non-Traditional Research Outputs (nTROs) developed in close partnership with Indigenous and local communities across Sarawak. Through co-creation with Indigenous and local communities, these works decentralise authorship, challenge extractive research models, and align with UNESCO frameworks for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.
The exhibition, at the Borneo Cultures Museum, also saw the presence of the Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah and husband, Datu Dr. Adi Badiozaman Tuah, who visited the exhibitions and even tried out the cinematic VR
