2025 Swinburne Annual Barak Wonga Oration
The Swinburne Annual Barak-Wonga Oration is designed to advance understandings in the wider community on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues and is named in honour of two significant Aboriginal leaders, William Barak and Simon Wonga. This year, we were honoured to welcome Nerita Waight CEO, Victorian Aboriginal Legal Services (VALS), Deputy Chair of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services (NATSILS), and elected member of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.
Nerita Waight is a proud Yorta Yorta and Narrandjeri woman with Taungurung connections and is an experienced solicitor with a demonstrated history of working in the legal and community services industry.
Nerita discusses 'A Path to a Just Justice System' and explores the history of Victoria's legal system. Providing a clear overview of the current legislative and policy landscape and outline a proposed path forward, through Treaty and toward establishing a fair and equitable justice system for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Isander community
