INFLUENCE OF CORRUPT ACTIVITIES ON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN A SOUTHERN MUNICIPALITY IN GHANA (2019-2021)
Get PDFThe issue of corruption is an increasingly social problem that affects many sectors of the economy of nations. Ghana, over the years, has continued, to battle the menace of corruption. Meanwhile, reducing corruption levels can substantively improve the quality of human capital and bring about improvement in human development. This article highlights the situation of corrupt activities at the grassroots level from the year 2019 to 2021 in a southern municipality in Ghana. It also identifies factors that facilitate corrupt activities and the effects of corrupt activities on community development. Using convergent parallel design based on the mixed-methods approach, primary data were gathered through face-to-face interviews and questionnaires. The study concludes that corruption has become rampant and institutionalized at the district level, to the extent that it disproportionately affects the governance systems of institutions of local communities, whose primary existence is to improve the quality of life of its citizens. Based on this, the study recommends that to eradicate corruption, the state must end impunity and promote transparency and access to information.

However, several challenges, including accessibility barriers, equity concerns, and financial constraints, must be navigated to ensure the success and sustainability of innovative programs. Looking ahead, advancements in technology and policy support offer opportunities to further enhance service delivery for underserved populations. By prioritizing collaboration, innovation, and equity, stakeholders can work towards creating inclusive systems that uplift and empower all communities. This paper underscores the importance of continuous adaptation and investment in innovative solutions to address the complex needs of underserved populations in the United States.

Empowering healthy lifestyles: Preventing non-communicable diseases through cohort studies in the US and Africa

In both the United States and Africa, the burden of NCDs is escalating, necessitating effective prevention strategies. This Review outlines the role of cohort studies in understanding and preventing NCDs through the promotion of healthy lifestyles in these regions. Cohort studies, which follow groups of individuals over time to assess the impact of various risk factors on health outcomes, offer invaluable insights into the etiology and progression of NCDs. In the US, large-scale cohort studies like the Nurses' Health Study and the Framingham Heart Study have identified critical lifestyle factors influencing NCD risk, including diet, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption. These findings have informed public health policies and interventions aimed at reducing NCD incidence through lifestyle modifications. In Africa, the emerging use of cohort studies provides a unique opportunity to address NCDs within diverse socio-economic and cultural contexts. Studies such as the AWI-Gen (Africa Wits-INDEPTH Partnership for Genomic Studies) are beginning to unravel the complex interplay between genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors in NCD development. These insights are crucial for developing tailored interventions that resonate with local populations and address specific risk factors prevalent in African communities. Key strategies for preventing NCDs through cohort studies in both regions include: promoting healthy eating habits, encouraging regular physical activity, implementing smoking cessation programs, and reducing alcohol consumption. Additionally, cohort studies can highlight the importance of early detection and management of risk factors, such as hypertension and high cholesterol, to prevent the onset of NCDs. By comparing findings from cohort studies in the US and Africa, researchers can identify common and region-specific determinants of NCDs, facilitating the development of global and local strategies for prevention. Ultimately, empowering healthy lifestyles through evidence-based interventions, informed by cohort study data, holds the potential to significantly reduce the burden of NCDs, improving health outcomes and quality of life across diverse populations.

ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION: AS PANACEA FOR SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NIGERIA
Get PDFFor many years, the Nigerian economy has been precariously reliant on crude oil, a single, volatile commodity, for its sustenance. As a result, its growth trajectory has been uneven and influenced by fluctuations in oil prices. It is concerning that Nigeria has neglected the development of its non-oil sector over the years and has become increasingly dependent on the oil industry to raise money. This paper examines the impact of the non-oil sector on the long-term growth and development of the Nigerian economy using a time series dataset from 1980 to 2016 obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletin and using the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation technique in a linear regression model. The findings indicate that Nigeria's non-oil sector's contribution to the country's sustainable growth is subpar. Policymakers cannot ignore the need to carefully develop the non-oil sector to diversify the Nigerian economy, given the cyclical nature of global oil prices and economic growth, to achieve sustainable growth and development, it is necessary to move past over-reliance on the oil sector and implement diversification strategies, such as developing the non-oil sector. This paper discusses this need. For Nigeria to successfully achieve diversification, the government must implement laws and business initiatives to boost private sector investment, concentrate on the industrialization of the non-oil sector, and support innovations and improvements in public financial management systems and processes through fiscal transparency and accountability.

The analysis reveals that carbon pricing, encompassing both carbon taxes and cap-and-trade systems, serves as a pivotal tool for mitigating climate change while fostering economic growth and structural transformation. Key findings highlight the potential of carbon pricing to drive innovation in green technologies, the importance of addressing social equity concerns, and the critical role of international policy coordination in mitigating cross-border carbon leakage and competitiveness issues. The study concludes that carbon pricing mechanisms, when effectively designed and equitably implemented, can align environmental sustainability with economic development goals.
