Abstract Background: Osteomyelitis coupled with immunocompromised people with drug or intravenous drug use produces infective endocarditis. Remember that atlantoaxial subluxation accompanied by infection of the pharynx or nearby tissues is termed Grisel syndrome. [2]. Epidural abscesses are sometimes surgical emergencies, depending on the type of neurological impairments. An upper cervical epidural abscess in the occiput at the level of C2 is highly rare and uncommon. At the level of the subaxial spine at C3-C6 OR C7-T1 is the cervicothoracic area. Case Presentation A 54-year-old female patient reported experiencing cough and catarrhal symptoms for three months due to a previous coronavirus infection, accompanied by shortness of breath and joint pain. The patient's neck pain intensified, radiating to the left arm (myelopathy); conservative treatment was ineffective. MRI of the cervical spine indicated purulent spondyloarthritis affecting the left C4-C6 facet joints, with severe spinal cord stenosis (Figure 1), accompanied by epiduritis in the adjacent segment and abscess formation in the posterior paravertebral muscles of the neck. The surgical intervention consisted of a left C5-C6 hemilaminectomy with a microdiscectomy with which a metal cage was placed after sanitation and drainage of the purulent epiduritis, approach to the spondyloarthritis in the C4-C6 segments, and management of an intermuscular abscess with a cage. Conclusion Our clinical case shows a cervical spinal epiduritis with spinal cord stenosis, confirmed by imaging; therefore, once the diagnosis was confirmed, the decision was to perform an eminent surgical intervention with a hemilaminectomy and microdiscectomy.&nbsp

Investigating The Influence of Tooth Loss on Salivary Flow Rate: A Community-Based Report

Increasing age has been reported to be associated with a higher prevalence of tooth loss and a greater risk of decreased salivary flow rate. This is because physiological aging affects both the dentition and salivary gland function. Degenerative changes in the oral tissues has also been shown to reduce glandular efficiency. Therefore, this study aims to analyze salivary flow rate based on the number of missing teeth in the elderly. The current study is part of a Community Service activity conducted at Martubung Public Health Center, Medan, in 2023. The sample population included elderly individuals aged ≥60 years who regularly participated in elderly posyandu (integrated health service posts) activities, with a total sample of 50 participants consisting of 38 females and 12 males. For each participant, the number of remaining teeth was counted, followed by the collection and measurement of both unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow rate for 5 minutes. The data obtained were then analyzed using the Pearson test. The results showed that the group with 15–24 missing teeth had the highest number of elderly individuals, totaling 21. In addition, unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow rate were highest in the group with 1–14 missing teeth, with mean values of 1.79±0.90 ml/min and 2.73±1.39 ml/min, respectively. The Pearson test showed a significance value of 0.05. Based on the analysis results, a higher salivary flow rate is associated with fewer missing teeth among the elderly. Key words: number of teeth, saliva flow rate, elderl

With the activities in the waters of Lake Toba will affect the condition of the aquatic environment and also contribute to the presence of microplastics. One of the interesting waste problems in waters to discuss is the presence of microplastics in waters. Microplastics are certainly more than <5 mm in size, there are three processes of microplastic formation, namely biologically, chemically and physically. Microplastics can contaminate fish through fish organs such as gills and digestive tracts. The purpose of this study was to determine the form and abundance of microplastics in the respiratory tract and digestive tract of fish. This study was conducted from November to December 2024. The average abundance in water samples was 21-57 particles / gram while in digestive tract samples it was 37-42 particles / gr dry weight and the last respiratory tract sample was 9 159 particles / gr dry weight. The forms of microplastics found were film-shaped microplastics, fiber microplastics, fragment microplastics and pellet microplastic

Literature Study: Genetic Mutations in Antibacterial Resistance

This study aims to understand how molecular and genetic mechanisms contribute to the development of antibacterial resistance and its impact on public health. The method used is a literature review by analyzing various books and scientific journals. Antibacterial resistance occurs when microorganisms become resistant to drugs that should effectively eliminate them, making treatment less effective. The misuse and overuse of antibiotics are the main causes of this issue. In Indonesia, easy access to antibiotics without a prescription worsens the situation. As a result, infections become more difficult to treat, prolonging illness and increasing the risk of death. Several bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, have shown high levels of resistance, particularly in hospitals. This resistance can develop through genetic mutations and the transfer of genetic material between bacteria. Therefore, antibacterial resistance is a serious threat that requires special attention in its control efforts
