The introduction of garden centres to the Hutt Valley
Get PDFNew Zealand gardening histories are frustratingly brief when discussing the shift in garden retailing in the post-war period. Often, only a mere sentence or paragraph considers the introduction of garden centres. Architectural historian Paul Walker provides an excellent example, writing "Drive-in suburban garden centres spread everywhere and displaced older modes of garden retailing – the central-city garden shops, local nurseries, and probably a good many of the bread-and-butter mail-order businesses have gone." He then moves on to another topic.This paper looks at this shift in garden retailing through three of the earliest garden centres in the Hutt Valley: Zenith, Twiglands and Kents. Each business represents different developments in garden retailing: a nursery that converted into a garden centre, a purpose-built garden centre, and a garden centre with a café. These developments changed how people shopped for plants and garden supplies and evoked various responses from their neighbourhoods. Interestingly the question asked time and again was - do garden centres contribute to the public good? In addition to regular historic sources such as newspapers and advertisements, this talk uses unusual sources such as files from local councils, the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board, and the Shops and Office Tribunal
Code of Ethics for Autonomous Vehicles
Get PDFThis case study focuses on autonomous vehicles and the ethical and sustainable considerations surrounding them. Autonomous vehicles have potential to greatly impact a variety of areas of daily life in a large scale, such as public health and privacy. It is important to address the concerns of autonomous vehicles before they are completely introduced to market. Proactive planning of how autonomous vehicles should be designed will be useful for creating a smoother timeline of achieving valuable implementations of the technology. For these reasons, the uncertain future of autonomous vehicles should be guided towards ethical and sustainable outcomes with a code of ethics. This paper therefore proposes a possible code of ethics, guided by a literature review on autonomous vehicles and a historic case analysis. The developed code is justified through findings from the literature and considering how it is applicable to a real-world event and the future of transportation

Get PDFDigraphs provide an alternative syntax for propositional logic, with digraph kernels corresponding to classical models. Semikernels generalize kernels and we identify a subset of well-behaved semikernels that provides nontrivial models for inconsistent theories, specializing to the classical semantics for the consistent ones. Direct (instead of refutational) reasoning with classical resolution is sound and complete for this semantics, when augmented with a specific weakening which, in particular, excludes Ex Falso. Dropping all forms of weakening yields reasoning which also avoids typical fallacies of relevance
Fictional Modality and the Intensionality of Fictional Contexts
Get PDFIn (Kosterec 2021), Kosterec attempts to provide ``model-theoretic proofs'' of certain theses involving the normal modal operators and and the truth-in-fiction (`a la Lewis) operator which he then goes on to show have counterexamples in Kripke models. He concludes from this that the embedding of modal logic under the truth-in-fiction operator is unsound. We show instead that it is the ``model-theoretic proofs'' that are themselves unsound, involving illicit substitution, a subtle error that nevertheless allows us to draw an important conclusion about intensional contexts (such as fictional contexts) and semantic equivalences
BCI-Algebras and Related Logics
Get PDFKabzinski in [6] first introduced an extension of BCI-logic that is isomorphic to BCI-algebras. Kashima and Komori in [7] gave a Gentzen-style sequent calculus version of this logic as well as another sequent calculus which they proved to be equivalent. They used the second to prove decidability of the word problem for BCI-algebras. The decidability proof relies on cut elimination for the second system, this paper provides a fuller and simpler proof of this. Also supplied is a new decidability proof and proof finding algorithm for their second extension of BCI-logic and so for BCI-algebras
"I Think She's Learnt Her Lesson": Juror Use of Cultural Misconceptions in Sexual Violence Trials
Get PDFThe extent to which decision-making in sexual violence jury trials is impacted by culturally embedded misconceptions is not well understood. In this article, we provide an insight into the views of 121 real jurors in 18 sexual violence trials, illustrating that rape myth acceptance scales give an incomplete view of when and how jurors might be influenced by cultural misconceptions. Prompted in part by the behaviour and tactics of counsel, jurors in real trials often expect complainants to fight back and to report sexual offending immediately. They also have expectations of complainants and defendants that derive from misconceptions about "real rape". While our study confirms that jurors are susceptible to cultural misconceptions, it also demonstrates the complexity of assessing the extent of their influence and the difficulties in designing reforms to reduce their use

Get PDFThis project surveys New Zealand court cases in the last 20 years (2000–2020) concerning monetary or gratuitous land transfers from parents to their children ("parent-child transfer") and examines New Zealand court approaches to the presumption of advancement concerning parent-child transfers. This article examines the status of the presumption in New Zealand, discusses the conceptual understandings of the presumption as revealed in the approaches taken by courts, and investigates the courts' approaches concerning the categories of persons who are subject to the presumption, namely mothers, adult children and sons- or daughters-in-law. This article highlights the weakened status of the doctrine and the confused and inconsistent approaches by courts in engaging (or declining to engage) the doctrine and calls for changes to clarify the understanding of the doctrine and to establish a more consistent approach
