What will it take? : Understanding settler silencing and realising cultural and structural reforms
How power influences the culture and structure of State schooling in Aotearoa has historically been set by the State and, although this has been particularly harmful for Māori, structural change continues to be imposed from the top. For example, the latest Education and Training Act came into effect in August, 2020. Changes through this Act are further supported by Ka Hikitia – Ka Hāpaitia, the National Education Learning Priorities (NELP), the Curriculum Refresh, and the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum. Other major changes, across the system, are set to come into effect by 2024. This paper discusses some of the learning that is required if cultural changes for equity and belonging are to be achieved within these imposed structural changes
Treaty of Waitangi Principles Relevant to Adaptation to Coastal Hazards from Sea-Level Rise
This article addresses some duties that arise under Te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi that are commonly referred to as "Treaty principles", and applies them to the new issue of protection of Māori interests in the face of coastal hazards associated with sea-level rise. It summarises the Māori interests likely to be affected by sea-level rise and related coastal hazards, and some adaptation measures. It summarises existing information on Crown duties under the Treaty of Waitangi with some comment on their application to local authorities. This includes a summary of the Treaty duties of the Crown (held by central government) and an explanation of how they are enforced. It outlines the Waitangi Tribunal decision on the MV Rena as an illustration of duties relevant to the handling of a disaster that damaged the coastal environment. It then discusses climate adaptation initiatives in the light of Treaty obligations, suggesting what Treaty principles might require of decision-makers and decision-making on climate adaptation measures under current law. While the focus of this article is limited to what existing law on the Treaty principles might require of government, it also briefly addresses recent developments that might expand legal obligations in the future. While this article stems from a project addressing adaptation to coastal hazards from sea-level rise, these findings and principles will be relevant to all climate adaptation decision-making, such as in relation to handling future floods and droughts
Digital Literary Landmarks of Aotearoa New Zealand
Digital literary forms in and of Aotearoa New Zealand have yet to be adequately historicised, and such works – and their authors – risk being lost to New Zealand’s literary history. Addressing the added challenge of doing history in the digital age, I offer an analytical survey of early digital literary works in or of NZ based around the categories of fiction, poetry, performance, and videogames. Cultivating a digital literary history serves us well not only in situating individual works of creative media in our collective cultural heritage but also in situating New Zealand amid broader networked culture.
Anderton: His Life and Times
David Grant’s life and times study of Jim Anderton raises fundamental questions about the nature of the New Zealand Labour Party that he first explored in his study of “Big Norm”. Central to both biographies is the issue of leadership and its connection to the collectivist notions that have underpinned the Labour Party since its inception. From Harry Holland, a leader who did not believe in leadership, to the arrival of the eloquent David Lange (1983− 1989) this collectivist ethos remained dominant if somewhat eroded by the experience of office and underlying social change
UAV-to-UAV Communication Establishing a Leader-Follower Formation
The UAV-to-UAV communication project aimed to research, implement, and review a communications structure capable of establishing a leader-follower formation between multiple unmanned aerial vehicles. With the intention of creating a scalable and extensible system with consumer grade devices to create an accessible swarming solution this research and development process explored and implemented methodologies of drone swarm control that allow operators greater command over groups of UAVs whilst only communicating with a single access point. This lens was chosen to increase the accessibility of drone swarm solutions for enthusiast and entry level consumers who require the technology but are unable to make large investments into more costly options which provide similar behaviour natively. As such, the system explored is composed of multiple consumer grade UAVs paired with Raspberry Pi devices which form a common managing mesh network while providing processing power for supplied in flight commands. These mesh network nodes are combined with a developed ground controller application that transmits commands into the network to be broadcasted and actioned across connected devices to allow for the intended formation flying. This framework achieves the goal of departing from the standard operation of individual connections between drones and corresponding ground controllers whilst maintaining the desired accessibility and affordability compared with other contemporarily available solutions
Firmware Design for a Mechatronic Chordophone
Azure Talos is a mechatronic chordophone that is theoretically capable of producing many of the expressive sounds and techniques of a human guitar player. However, despite its potential, Azure Talos was inherited in an incomplete state. To achieve full functionality, an entire firmware architecture was designed and implemented. Hardware issues were then identified and remedied. A User Interface was then implemented to facilitate operation by non-mechatronic composers. The result is a fully functioning mechatronic chordophone that is capable of levels of expressivity beyond any comparable devices found in the literature
An Authentic Physics-Based Traction Trebuchet Simulation in Unreal Engine 5
History is commonly perceived as boring and irrelevant to modern youth due to the inaccessible and often dark nature of literature surrounding it. Video games provide a very unique medium to retell stories of epic battles and survival against threats that we rarely worry about today, allowing a broader audience to engage with and learn from our rich history. Traction trebuchets were used for centuries in medieval siege warfare, yet the researcher did not know of their existence prior to starting this project due to the lack of representation in modern media. This project sought to use this modern medium to simulate the machine that would have saved and destroyed many lives with accurate physics and create a fun experience to discover history in a comfortable and accessible setting. In working on this project, it has become clear that the initial vision for this project was ambitious and the game has not lived up to its full potential. However, the physics simulation and accuracy of the trebuchet have been continually prioritised as this will be the most useful artifact to use in future work in this area. The initial work has provided context on some of Unreal Engine’s current physics capabilities, documentation of solutions to bugs created during development that may trip up new learners to Unreal Engine, and a prototype of a traction trebuchet simulation for users to interact with
Frank Thomas Moore: The Messiah of Johnsonville
Most, probably all, Christian countries produce one or more messiahs. Some of these messiahs immigrated to settler colonies to escape religious persecution, others emerged from the indigenous people who had been introduced to Christianity, and yet others were the descendants of settlers.[i] Many attracted followers and some of these established intentional communities where their teachings could be put into practice, and some of this activity resulted in new religions, few of which lasted beyond the death of the messiah.[ii] Most preached that a better world would result from the adoption of their teachings.
