    On the Negative Disjunction Property

    Get PDF
In the field of intermediate logics, the concept of the disjunction property (DP)  plays an important part. Lloyd Humberstone has drawn my attention to an analogious principle  called the Negative Disjunction Property ( NDP) which applies when the disjuncts involved are negated. The author investigates the NDP in the case of intermediate propositional logics. Key words: intermediate logic, disjunction property, negative disjunction property, Heyting algebra, Janko

A Note on Goddard and Routley's Significance Logic

    Get PDF
The present note revisits the joint work of Leonard Goddard and Richard Routley on significance logics (namely, logics able to handle nonsignificant sentences) with the aim of shedding new light on their understanding by studying them under the lens of recent semantic developments, such as the plurivalent semantics developed by Graham Priest. These semantics allow sentences to receive one, more than one, or no truth-value at all from a given carrier set. Since nonsignificant sentences are taken to be neither true nor false, i.e. truth-value gaps, in this essay we show that with the aid of plurivalent semantics it is possible to straightforwardly instantiate Goddard and Routley’s understanding of how the connectives should work within significance logics

    The Last Man

I examine the basic logical character of ‘the last man example’, as well as the logical character of one of its more important variants. Although it has one striking antecedent in recent philosophy – of which more later – it’s fair to regard it as an example first presented to a contemporary audience by Richard Routley in his 1973 paper, ‘Is There a Need for a New, an Environmental, Ethic?’.  I want to determine exactly how the example goes and what it shows. I want to determine what it does not show. One reason for engaging in this exercise is the striking and engaging character of the last man example itself. Another is that a large number of environmental philosophers have since referred to the last man but have drawn different, sometimes contrary, lessons from it – though we won’t have time here to visit any but the earliest of these responses. It seems to me time to patiently revisit the example and time to attempt a conclusive understanding of its significance. A second, and broader, purpose I have is to describe the meta-ethical views it led Routley to adopt – or manufacture! – in an attempt to philosophically position his normative stance within a more fundamental, explanatory, framework

"In my view, English-Māori and Māori-English translation is in a more prosperous place than it has ever been. Māori translation exists now in almost every sector of our society. In the last decade, we have seen a number of firsts in this area, including Moana, the first Disney film translated into Māori. The future is bright.

Subtitling in the classroom: Il secondo tragico Fantozzi (1976)

    Get PDF
Several studies in the recent past have proven that subtitling is undoubtedly beneficial in foreign language acquisition.1 This project aims to prove the same for a New Zealand context, a country where the scope of audio-visual translation is rather limited and among students who have had little to no exposure to subtitling audiovisual material. The current project is based upon two separate studies, one undertaken by Jennifer Lertola and Cristina Mariotti, the other by Jennifer Lertola and Laura Incalcaterra-McGloughlin.2 The project involved 23 second-year students of Italian at Victoria University of Wellington who, as part of their course work during their second semester of study, where tasked with subtitling the Italian comedy classic Il secondo tragico Fantozzi into English

The Ardern Government’s Foreign Policy Challenges

    Get PDF
With pressures growing on international rules, Jacinda Ardern’s new government faces extra challenges in shaping a principled New Zealand foreign policy based on the consistent assertion of values. Many of these external challenges are being felt in Asia. Even if force can be avoided on the Korean peninsula, escalating tariff competition between the United States and China may signal deep challenges for the rules of the road that suit New Zealand. As the wider storm clouds grow, the Ardern government’s focus on the South Pacific in cooperation with Australia offers some respite. But the Labour–New Zealand First coalition may complicate the delivery of predictable and creditable foreign policy stances

A New Approach to Environmental Valuation for New Zealand

    Get PDF
New Zealand’s Resource Management Act is frequently criticised for the costs and delays it imposes on activities, but less attention is given to the consistency of values it applies to environmental effects through its decisions. The wide variety of parties who exercise decision roles under the act lack guidance on the economic value of the environment, and non-market valuation studies are too costly to be widely used and too few and varied to infer reliable generic values. Drawing on experience in estimating the public value of safety improvements, this article proposes an alternative approach that measures people’s aversion to the risk of environmental impacts of different scales and severity which could yield values sufficiently generic to be widely used, and outlines its uses both within and beyond the RMA applications

Measuring Productivity in the Health Sector

    Get PDF
Over the next few decades governments will increasingly need to balance the new and growing demands facing the health system with a tighter fiscal outlook. The best way to protect standards while responding to these pressures will be to lift productivity. This article draws on a recent New Zealand Productivity Commission inquiry into state sector productivity and discusses the implications of this work for the health sector. It begins by highlighting the importance of health sector productivity, particularly given the fiscal outlook. It then discusses recent efforts to measure productivity in the health system, before outlining possible next steps in measuring the sector’s productivity
