A Systemic-Functional Approach to Music, Meaning and Multimodal Transposition
The present study aims to make a contribution to multimodal studies adopting a systemic-functional framework to build a theoretical device that allows analysing music in multimodal constructions. Our proposal is based on Kress & van Leeuwen’s model for image analysis (2005). Several categories proposed by these authors have been re-elaborated to fit a musical approach and new categories have been added following McKerrell (2015) and van Leeuwen (1999) perspectives. Our working hypothesis is that meaning in music is socially conventionalised and associated with meaningful constructions in other modes. Thus absolute music conceptualizations access multimodal levels of discourse as part of representations constituted by associated meanings in the different modes
EnThe contribution sets out to investigate the diachronic dynamics of the well-known phenomenon whereby, in some Salento dialects, the conjunction se (< Lat. SI) is replaced by a form ci identical to the complementizer and relative pronoun ci < QUI. Notoriously, the phenomenon affects a large section of eastern southern dialects, extending from eastern Lucania to the Capo di Leuca including Bari (ROHLFS779). On the basis of the diachronic documentation of the Salento varieties, the hypothesis is put forward here that the innovation had its epicentre in the eastern "Upper South (Alto-meridionale)" varieties, before spreading to the dialects of Terra d'Otranto at a later stage, after the 17th century. Particularly relevant in this respect are medieval Salento documents, which bear no trace of the phenomenon, and the dialect literature of the early 18th century, in which the feature is only reliably documented in northern Salento texts, in particular in the comedy Nniccu Furcedda written in the dialect of Francavilla Fontana
