Strategies for Whistleblowing: How Civil Society Organizations Intervene in the Process of Blowing the Whistle
Whistleblowing and collective action have been historically strictly intertwined. However, few works have tried to understand the interrelations between these forms of ethical resistance. The lack of dialogue between these literature strands seems particularly problematic given the contribution of social movement organizations and civil society groups in collecting, articulating, and publicizing the information disclosed by whistleblowers. Whereas Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) constitute crucial whistleblowers' addresses, much remains to be said about how grassroots collective actors strategically intervene in whistleblowing, easing information disclosure, protecting informants, and triggering broader political and social change processes. Focusing on insights from Italy and Spain, the article draws on qualitative interviews, documents, and parliamentary debates to single out three common strategies CSOs adopt to intervene in the whistleblowing process before, during, and after whistleblowers' disclosure: policy input, direct social action, and legal intervention. The article contributes to ongoing discussions in collective action and whistleblowing research, elucidating how CSOs influence the whistleblowing process and discussing their micro- and macro-level consequences
The Community Organizing Method from the US to Europe: Similarities, Differences, and Challenges Ahead
The approach of Community Organizing to building and empowering local communities has become increasingly popular in the last decades, both because of the past involvement in community organizing of popular personalities such as Barack Obama, and because of the crisis of more traditional practices of civil society building. The main promoter of this approach worldwide is today the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), based in Chicago, which was founded in 1940 by Saul D. Alinsky, who has also systematized the main principles of community organizing. Thanks to IAF activity, since the 1990s, the community organizing method has also spread to western Europe, first in the UK and Germany, and later in several other countries. After sketching the history and methodology of the broad-based community organizing approach adopted by the IAF, this paper will try to analyze the community organizing initiatives developed in Western Europe during the last 30 years under the supervision of (or inspired by) the Industrial Areas Foundation network, singling out the main problems and issues at stake in adopting and translating the method outside the US, in different social, political and cultural contexts. The analysis will be based both on semi-structured interviews with several US- and Europe-based organizers and on the participant observation carried out since 2019, during the development of a community organizing initiative in the city of Turin, in northern Italy
An intervention for boys aimed at the prevention of violence against women – Qualitative outcome
Programmes designed to empower women in an attempt to eradicate violence against them address only one side of the coin. To promote respectful gender relationships, it is also necessary to change the destructive perceptions of masculinity commonly found among men and boys. The 12-session Hero Empathy Programme was implemented for Grade 5 boys at 10 primary schools in low-resourced communities in South Africa (age range: 10–13 years; black = 100%). The aim was to expose all the Grade 5 boys in those schools to alternative perspectives on masculinity and respectful gender relationships. Before the intervention, focus group discussions were held with the boys to gain an understanding of their conceptualisations and experiences in their communities. Focus group discussions held after the intervention explored changes in the boys’ gender perspectives and behaviour. After the intervention, boys questioned gender stereotypes, respected girls more, showed less violence towards girls and accepted a positive perspective of masculinity, which is to be strong and to provide for and protect the family. The intervention showed promise with regard to its ability to promote respectful gender relationships from a young age. To enhance sustainability and have an effect on the social norms of communities, the intervention should be widely implemented.
Fostering collective responsibility in prevention and ending gender-based violence issues
Gender-based violence is a major health, social, and human rights issue in the global context. It knows no social or economic boundaries and has devastating effects mostly on women and girls of all socio-economic backgrounds in developed and developing countries. Decreasing violence against women and girls requires a community-based, multi-pronged approach, and sustained engagement with multiple stakeholders. The rationale of the special issue is to emphasize the community and contextual aspects which are drivers of violence against women with the aim to understand the broader context and to contribute to cultural and community level prevention efforts. A specific focus of the papers in the issue is how to enhance community agency and collective responsibility in ending violence against women
EnWith an approach aimed at analyzing the multiple value of objects of consumption in the fifteenth century Southern Italy, the paper proposes the results of a research conducted on the two and only Libri Giornali of the Strozzi bank in Naples (dated 1473 and 1476). People turned to the bank for various reasons, but mainly in order to access credit, which was easily provided by Florentine bankers. In addition to the Aragonese Crown, lords, high officials, merchants, artisans, and those able to discharge the debt, contracted in many cases (as the same causal statements of the accounts stated) especially to afford the purchase of a good or an object. And the objects are very often luxury; they are jewels, fine tissues, garments, manuscript or printed books, spices, but also shoes, riding saddles and food. Each of them satisfies a pleasure or a need, fulfills the individual or collective taste of the time, and possesses a value that is, at the same time, as well as material, symbolic, psychological, social, cultural, political, economic and more. The intent is to reflect on the different meanings and values attributed to the object or objects on which the attention and interest of the fifteenth-century consumer fell the most, for the possession of which - as attested by the bank's accounts - it was customary to recur to the credit market
EnThe debate concerning one of the most important platonic dialogue, have been recently revitalized by the latest studies on Magnesia, the city presented in the Nomoi, have revitalized the debate on one of Plato's most important dialogues. The new polis of Laws does not completely depart from the 'utopia' of the Republic. Kallipolis remains the virtuous point of reference to which all potential administrative constructions must strive. In the Laws, however, there is an undeniable attempt to a continuous search for concreteness, through specific rules and towards a more concrete urban organization. Plato point out in a very detailed way the institutional aspects that would have significantly contributed to the creation of the new functional made up of the best Greeks, functional and unchangeable: the assembly, the council, the laws keepers, the night council and all the other magistrates. But what are the historical examples that Plato really refers to? A mixture that delivers the Platonic originality sense

The article explores the Artificial Intelligence (AI) definitions and its significant impact on daily life, drawing attention to the debate on education. The difficulties in defining AI are used to develop a reflection aimed at understanding its role as a meta-technology, through a special-pedagogical view, emphasizing the importance of understanding and including its scope in educational design
This contribution explores the intersection between artificial intelligence (AI) and initial teacher training, focusing on perceptions and self-assessment of competencies in using AI technologies. Despite the growing integration of AI in education, few studies analyze the self-assessment of specific technological competencies and the perceptions of future teachers in this regard. To this end, a questionnaire was administered to 156 first-year students of the Primary Education Science degree program at XXX University to capture the future teachers' perceptions of AI. The results indicate that teachers with greater competencies in using AI express more positive perceptions regarding its educational effectiveness, while those with lesser competencies highlight concerns related to student stress and the extra time required for planning. These differences underscore the importance of adequate training to effectively and consciously integrate AI into education
