Discours numériques et approches outillées : quelques réflexions sur les apports des métadonnées

This paper examines the role of metadata and annotations in the analysis of digital corpora by linguistic analysis tools. The present study is grounded in a discursive approach to the analysis of linguistic data. This conceptual framework determines both the concept of the corpus adopted for the study and the methodological principles guiding its exploration. The structuring of the corpus through metadata represents a pivotal juncture between the digital constitution of the material observed and the way in which it can be explored by means of corpus analysis tools. The paper initially addresses the methodological transformations, and the epistemological implications produced by digital resources. The evolving conceptualization of empirical data and the nature of the objects of study are also highlighted. A typology of metadata is then proposed, based on two main parameters: the different types of information they represent, on the one hand, and the characteristics of the data, on the other. Specific focus is directed towards the digital discourses of Web 2.0

Translating Hesitations in Film Speech: The case of Hugh Grant

The present study aims to investigate the way dysfluencies such as hesitations and pauses of silence are rendered when adapting films from English into Italian, and their impact on characterization. Such features are observed referring to the actor Hugh Grant, known for displaying verbal insecurity stereotypically British (Chiaro 2000; Fox 2004). The study focuses on four romantic comedies: Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Notting Hill (1999), Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and Love Actually (2003), where the presence of hesitation markers plays an important role in the characterization of the male protagonist, namely a young man, shy, hesitant and a little clumsy. The investigation is carried out through a linguistic and translation-oriented analysis of the original English version and the Italian dubbed version of each title. When possible, a multilingual comparative analysis is also carried out, taking into account the adaptations made for other languages such as French and Spanish in order to identify symmetries and asymmetries between different translation approaches. In dubbing a tendency to reduce hesitations can be noticed, which is partly due to the limits imposed by the audiovisual medium itself (Bruti 2019; Chaume 2012). The analysis shows how possible changes in the adaptations can alter the perception of characters, leading them to a performance that does not correspond to the original one

Radio Magica's community Talking Maps®: Digital, linguistic and cognitive accessibility for cultural heritage

    Get PDF
The Talking Maps® project aims at developing a "digital common good" based on multimodality to promote the dissemination of Italian Cultural Heritage through a narrative language, enjoyable and accessible by a wide range of users, including non-experts such as children, and individuals with cognitive disabilities or linguistic special needs. Maps are both digital and paper-based. Digital contents connected to each Talking MapⓇ comprise multimodal stories and fun-facts developed by a multidisciplinary team of experts and artists, in line with the principles of universal design. Maps are conceived as community maps, since the production methodology involves citizens of all ages. Empirical investigation conducted between 2018 and 2023 made it possible to point out the strengths of the project and analyze its development on a longitudinal basis
