The Role of Right-Wing Think Tanks in Ideological Hybridizations. The Case of Burke Foundation

    Get PDF
This paper aims to investigate the role of right-wing think tanks in the ideological hybridization of the conservative field, with a particular focus on the Burke Foundation, an American think tank, in shaping a "national-conservative" project. Drawing on Michael Freeden's morphological approach, this paper assumes the hypothesis that ideologies are constantly evolving and argues that this is particularly true in the current context. The neo-conservatism of the Republican Party has been destabilized by the transformation of the American neo-liberal order following the 2007/2008 financial crisis. Gary Gerstle (2022) explicitly refers to this as a crisis of the American model of neo-liberalism. Meanwhile, the rise of the first Trump presidency laid the groundwork for Reagan-era neo-conservatism to be grafted onto an ethno-nationalist ideology. Secondly, it will be argued that the revival of ideologies brings to life a revival of intellectuals as "ideology-enablers". Finally, the strengthening of national-conservatism, meant as a bridge between the "old conservatism" and the new illiberal nationalism that emerged in the populist decade, will be discussed. For this purpose, an overview will be provided of the hybrid ideological Pantheon of a think tank like the Burke Foundation

Dal pensiero ordinato l’ordine del pensiero. Ricadute didattiche ed epistemologiche dell’insegnamento del latino (ovvero, nascita di una forma mentis)

EnThis work aims to examine the argumentative strategies used in two passages, one in prose (Cic., De Re Publica VI, 26-27), the other in poetry (Lucr., De Rerum Natura III, 417-831) which discuss and support two opposite theories: the immortality of the soul (the former), and the soul’s mortality (the latter). I intend to demonstrate that the same linguistic and syntactic structures, using similar skills and expertise, can effectively give shape to antithetical theories, whose meaning is not based on content, but on the forms that express them. The didactic impact of this approach is instrumental not only in getting students to learn about/understand two masters in the history of ancient literature, but also, by deconstructing the structures of the text and showing its mechanisms, in helping them build their own argumentative method, and teaching them how to use it.ItIl lavoro si propone di indagare le strategie argomentative impiegate in due passi, uno in prosa (dal De Re Publica ciceroniano, VI, 26-27), uno in poesia (dal De Rerum Natura lucreziano, III, 417-831), che discutono e sostengono due teorie opposte: l'immortalità dell'anima (il primo), la sua mortalità (il secondo).

EnThe paper starts from the new formula of the State Exam disciplinary test at classical high school (with co-text, text and questions) to propose a reflection on the renewal of translation teaching starting from concrete experimental experiences linked to the preparation of students for the "Olympiad of Classical Languages and Civilizations". The test given at 2019 State Exam (the first ever with the new formula) is also analyzed to highlight its merits and limitations related to the development of specific skills and competences.

Adaptive Estimation of Periodic Regression Model in Short Panel Data

    Get PDF
This paper proposes the use of the adaptive estimation method for estimating the periodic regression parameters in short panel data. This will go through three phases. The first phase aims to show that the periodic regression model verifies the Uniform Local Asymptotic Normality (ULAN), the second phase focuses on constructing the local asymptotically Minimax (LAM) estimators, and the last phase deals with constructing the Adaptive Estimators (AE) of the periodic regression model using the results of phase one and phase two. The results obtained in the simulation show that the Adaptive Estimator is always better than the Least Squares Estimator. The AE is more efficient in the case of an asymmetric score function. Real data are used to compare the two methods and show that the periodic coefficient regression model outperforms both traditional regression and random regression models

    Length-Biased Benrabia Distribution with Applications

    Get PDF
The idea of weighted distributions is widely used in many fields, for ex- ample: medicine, ecology and reliability. They are more significant for mod- eling data when the base distributions are not proper or fit the data with less competence. Length biased distributions are special cases of the weighted distributions. In this paper, we propose a new generalization of Benrabia dis- tribution, called the length-biased Benrabia distribution. The recommended distribution’s various characteristics are deduced and thoroughly explored. Some numerical studies are implemented, they demonstrate that the distri- bution is skewed to the right with heavier tail than the normal distribu- tion. To estimate the distribution’s parameters six methods of estimation are employed. A simulation study is conducted shows that the estimators are approximately unbiased and consistent. Three data sets applications are performed, they show that the suggested distribution has the best fit for these data sets comparing to some competence distributions
