Activist Translations in Italy. A Paratextual Analysis of Five Feminist and Queer Editorial Projects

    Get PDF
After being widely debated in the Anglophone world, the issue of diversity in the publishing industry has been recently introduced in Italy as well, calling for greater gender, ethnic, sexual, and class equality. As pointed out by Helen Vassallo (2023), the agents involved in the publication of a book – translators, editors, publishers – are pivotal in the promotion of inclusivity. In particular, some small publishing houses play a key role in this regard thanks to their overtly activist mission. This paper deals with a selection of small Italian activist publishers and their efforts to counteract mainstream narratives about diversity and promote intersectional feminist and queer culture on a transnational level through translation. The paratexts of five translations whose source text is already part of an activist project are analysed through Kathryn Batchelor’s (2018) framework to demonstrate that they are a complementary form of activism in which the publishing industry agents can further their political and activist agendas and comment on the texts and the linguistic choices their translation required

EnGrecìa Salentina is not only an original linguistic, historical and cultural heritage. It is also, and especially, the long process of a higher social democracy. Broadening the civil and popular values of its distinctiveness in a renewed alliance between knowledge and public representation is, at the same time, the moral duty and the political task of young generations.

    Get PDF
EnThe aim of this paper is the study and analysis of a group of burials selected in various centers of the Salento peninsula, in a chronological period between the end of the 3rd and the 1st century BC, characterized by the presence of Apulian Grey Gloss Ware. Through the analysis of the chosen sample we will try to define the main shapes used in the funerary ritual, which is also an indicator of an economic and social change that occurred in southern Apulia. In fact, the Hannibalic war constituted the true starting point of the process of transformation of the Salento area, with a progressive destructuring of the Italic framework on a political and socio-economic level. Archaeological research has highlighted a remodeling of settlement structures starting from the end of the 3rd century. BC. In particular, there is a tendency towards the shrinking of the urban area, for the larger centres, and a progressive abandonment of the fortifications, until then a symbol of Hellenistic cities, which became an element of the extra-urban landscape. A rarefaction of archaeological evidence is also recorded in the funerary field. In this context, Apulian Grey Gloss Wares can represent the indicator of some aspects of the transformation of the socio-economic structures of the region. The introduction of Apulian Grey Gloss Wares among the objects, often in association with transport containers, may constitute an indication of the economic changes that took place in Messapian society. Furthermore, in this phase, of particular interest was the introduction of incineration, which testifies to the openness of the Messapian world towards new ritual forms.

Capitalist Backsliding? From Neoliberalism to 'Illiberal Market Economy' in Poland and Hungary

    Get PDF
In examining Poland and Hungary, we offer a case study of East and Central European nations and economies transitioning from liberal democracy and free-market principles to what we term an "illiberal market economy". This shift challenges the neoliberal model that underpinned the post-1989 transformations in the region. Furthermore, the emerging systems in Budapest and Warsaw defy conventional categories found in the Varieties of Capitalism literature. While these systems may exhibit surface similarities to coordinated market economies, such as increased state intervention and government expansion, they diverge significantly due to systemic clientelism. Patronal networks enable the ruling party to capture of the state, facilitated by the presence of weak or dependent institutions. Political monopolization of power fosters an environment conducive to rent-seeking and patronage, often reaching corruptive extremes, ultimately serving as coordination mechanisms within the economic system. Authoritarian politics in both Hungary and Poland instrumentalizes institutions to limit the free-market space, resulting in an illiberal market economy — a distinct form of state capitalism infused with an East and Central European character

Civil Society, De-democratization and Political Polarization: The Hungarian, Polish, and Israeli Cases

    Get PDF
This study aims to identify how civil society reacts to the de-democratizing attempts and the political polarization that usually accompanies this process. Civil society actors working under populist rule usually have to overcome two main challenges: the government's attempt to attack and co-opt civil society, and political polarization, which limits their social embeddedness, a crucially important criterion for resistance and maintaining their independence. I will examine the Hungarian, Polish, and Israeli cases and show how civil society organizations respond to the changing political context and how these responses might interact with political polarization. In each case, the paper introduces the policies and main legislative framework, funding and political discourse concerning civil society, and the responses of a diverse set of organizations (human rights, environmental protection, and civil society development organizations along with right-wing or pro-government civil society organizations). The main time frame of the analysis is between 2010 and 2020 for Hungary and Israel, and 2015-2020 for Poland, but in some accounts, I will also refer to developments between 2020 and 2023, using desk research and organizational interviews

Hegemony in Action: Crafting New Common Sense at Orbán's Hungarian Academy of Arts (2011-2023)

This article analyzes the construction of a right-wing hegemony through the lens of its intellectuals. I examine the Hungarian Academy of Arts (HAA) [Magyar Művészeti Akadémia], a flagship institution in Orbán's Hungary that has not been previously researched. To understand the Academy's mental and material processes in tandem, I mobilize Antonio Gramsci's concept of common sense. With this concept, I approach the Academy's "popular conception of the world". With the help of ethnographic methods, I aim to study the heart of the state and analyze its power relations. The article argues that as much as the political economy of the regime, its ideas are full of paradoxes. These controversies do not stem from incompetence but from the contradictions of capitalism. Therefore, the article points out that the ideas of right-wing intellectuals are far from a coherent ideology. Institutions such as HAA consolidate these ideas into a messy mixture of common sense. In the case of HAA, the organizing principle of common sense is the feeling that right-wing artists were oppressed before Orbán returned to power in 2010, but they can now fulfill their vocation. By emphasizing how the beliefs and ideas of right-wing actors fuel an authoritarian capitalist regime, I bring three contributions to the literature. First, I demonstrate how the worldview of HAA is rooted in the past inequalities of post-socialism. Second, I go beyond the image of top-down propaganda and stress that the incoherence of common sense emerges from the regime's internalized contradictions. Third, I draw attention to the role of the state and its intellectuals in orchestrating the common sense to normalize the local regime of capital accumulation. As a result, the article claims that right-wing intellectuals should be neither demonized nor idealized, but their ideas must be considered along with their pasts and the regime they craft

"It burns me from the inside like an open wound": A qualitative study of women’s illness experience with endometriosis.

Endometriosis profoundly impacts public health, quality of life, and economic stability, causing severe pain, fatigue, and mental health issues, and impeding work and sexual health. Despite extensive research, diagnostic delays and treatment inefficacies persist, impacting quality of life and economic stability. This study aims to explore the personal experiences of women with endometriosis, focusing on symptomatology, treatment effectiveness, and the role of social support, using a qualitative methodology to enrich current understanding and guide future healthcare strategies. Interviews with nineteen women revealed diagnostic challenges, including delays and normalization of pain, unsatisfactory treatment outcomes, and substantial impacts on daily life and psychological well-being. The study identified a need for improved medical empathy, awareness, and support systems. The findings underscore the complexity of managing endometriosis. Women experienced isolation due to disbelief and lack of support, impacting familial, friendly, and intimate relationships. Positive healthcare experiences were characterized by empathy and active listening from professionals. However, the cost of treatments and hospitalizations often hindered access to medical care. Social support networks, including online communities, were crucial for comfort and infor-mation sharing. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the profound impact of endometriosis on women's lives. It underscores the need for a multidisciplinary approach to treatment and prevention, including raising public awareness and early diagnosis. The research calls for destigmatizing menstrual education and improving healthcare literacy to challenge cultural norms around menstrual pain and endometriosis.
