Russian Cultural Studies and Kul'turologija in Italy: A proposal for bibliographical research (1990-2020) Giulia Baselica Università degli studi di Torino   Over the last thirty years, Italian Russistics has been enriched by numerous publications on cultural topics, thus better defining the blurred boundaries and vast areas of a transversal research strand that identifies its disciplinary models with American Cultural Studies and Russian-Soviet Kul'turologija. Whereas Lotman's boundless scientific production has, at least in part, been the subject of translation and analysis, as well as some important studies by Lichačëv and Averincev, various scientific works were dedicated to the study of specific aspects and expressions of Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet culture – relating to literature, folklore, visual and performing arts, media, byt, national cultural symbols, mass culture and other topics – in various research areas: Cross-cultural studies, Comparative cultural studies, Cultural history, Cultural geography, Gender studies, Cultural heritage studies, Popular culture studies, Cultural semiotics, and many more. In Italian Russistics, the expression 'Russian culture' appears, presumably for the first time, in 1923 in the volume Saggi sulla cultura russa (Essays on Russian culture) by Ettore Lo Gatto  and  replicated by the author himself in the still unpublished typescript, Storia della cultura russa (History of Russian Culture) dating back to the very early 1980s. The Lo Gatto’s project – a literary profile of Russia within a broadly cultural framework – was followed by a two-decade-long silence. Towards the end of the 1990s, Gian Piero Piretto would start a debate on Cultural studies methodological approaches and fields of investigation applied to the Russian world. This paper aims to outline an overview of the main orientations and research themes of Russian Cultural Studies in Italy.   Key words: Annotated Bibliography; Italian Russian Studies; Russian Cultural Studies; Russian Cultural Studies; Kul’turologija; Russian Culture. Parole chiave: Bibliografia ragionata; Russistica italiana; Russian Cultural Studies; Kul’turologija; Cultura russa;   Bionote: Giulia Baselica is Associate Professor of Russian Language and Literature at the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Modern Cultures of the University of Turin, where she teaches Russian Language and Literature. She specialises in Russian literature, especially from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Russian culture, odes, comparative literature, and the history and criticism of translation. She has published numerous articles and contributions in these fields of research in anthologies and journals such as Studi Slavistici, Filolog, Studi comparatistici, Diacritica, Il Nome del testo, Kniževna istorija, Nasledje, Kwartalnik Neofilologiczny and others. Reconstructing the image of a nation through exotic narratives. The case of Albanian authors writing in Italian

    Get PDF
Italian language narratives of Albanian authors hold a substantial presence in the Italian publishing arena. While frequently addressing themes associated with their homeland, these authors explore a diverse array of genres, including novels, memoirs, detective fiction, and poetry. This discussion, however, will not delve into the latter genre, as its unique aesthetic and formal characteristics would warrant a separate analysis. Despite the diversity of content and individualities of its authors, this narrative persists in being categorized either under the all-encompassing label of "migrant literature" or examined through a gender-focused lens, with predominant emphasis on some of the most renowned female writers. In our view, this peculiarity of the Italian literary criticism regarding Albanian literature can be attributed to a not yet entirely refined framing of the Albanian literary landscape itself and the historical-cultural context of a nation that, having endured nearly five centuries of Ottoman rule, was perceived as a mysterious Islamic outpost in the heart of Europe. Consequently, it remained one of the least explored European countries until relatively recently

    Get PDF
Equipped with balanced budgets and international praise for his work, António de Oliveira Salazar became Minister of Finance on April 27, 1928, with reinforced powers as per usual at the time. After several crises caused by the instability of the government, which gave rise to a new formation of the executive, the resolution of the last one is followed by the third speech made in public by Salazar, on October 21, 1929, in the Sala do Conselho de Estado, for the occasion of the homage paid to him by the Municipal Councils of the country. The main theme of the paper is precisely the aforementioned speech, entitled “Política de Verdade; Política de Sacrifício; Política Nacional”, where the Minister sets out his ideas on the future of the country and calls for the writing of a new Constitution, capable of creating a stable political order. The study intends to identify some of the linguistic strategies applied by Salazar to gain the trust of his public and, in this specific case, to gain consensus regarding the legitimation of the dictatorship. To this end, we will focus our analysis on aspects such as the ethos and the regime’s association with the dichotomy of truth and lie, which suggests that ditadura is true politics and, indisputably, the politics of truth.

In Oga Magoga.

    Get PDF
The contribution of the toponymic component in the construction of idioms is, unlike what one might think, truly conspicuous. It is a material, often of considerable importance and scope, which has not had great success in our lexicography. In this paper, we will focus on some Italian idiomatic expressions – no longer in use – that contain toponyms. In the second part we reconstruct the particularly interesting history of the expressions linked to Oga Magoga

On allusion from a socio-cognitive perspective

    Get PDF
Although there is no shortage of research on irony or metaphor, there is a scarcity of theoretical work on allusion. In this paper, I focus on allusion and advance a proposal that builds on earlier studies but refines them in the light of current usage-based, complexity-driven models of language. I look at allusion in the framework of the Entrenchment-and-Conventionalization Model (EC-Model hereafter). The EC-Model is a usage-based and emergentist model of language knowledge and convention rooted in cognitive linguistics that explains the processes underlying the intertwining of social practice and cognition. In accordance with this model, this paper considers allusion as a complex phenomenon that emerges in usage out of the interaction of the intentional activation on the part of the speaker – through linguistic markers of any length, belonging to any usage event type – of a network of entrenched associations and conventionalized conformity profiles assumed to be shared with the hearer

Capri, Капри, Капрі.

    Get PDF
In some of their works, Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) and Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky (1864-1913) were inspired by their long stay in Capri. At that time, both authors were subjects of the Russian tsar, belonging to the same generation, and later became part of the Russian and Ukrainian literary canon, respectively. It was on the Italian island that they were able to meet and begin a friendship based on great mutual respect. In this article, after recounting the experience the two writers shared on the Italian island, I will analyze and compare excerpts from Gorky’s well-known Italian Tales (Skazki ob Italii) and Kotsiubynsky’s less famous The Dream (Son) and On the Island (Na ostrovi). More specifically, I would like to demonstrate how Gorky’s texts are more characterized by a realistic approach with social elements, while in the texts of Kotsiubynsky the details of the landscape fade into a literary impressionism with fairy-tale traits. However, in both cases the sunny island of Capri symbolizes the beginning of a completely new life (for the lyrical subject or even for the whole of humanity)

Un viaggio nei sonetti di Manuel Alegre

    Get PDF
Written under the sign of travel, of the political persecutions of Salazar’s dictatorship, of colonization and war, of emigration and exile, Manuel Alegre’s verses, as a syntagm that allows us to reconstruct the isotopy of the wandering of the Portuguese people, seem to continue these (un)finished stories – a story of travel and transformation and, paradoxically, of the search for an inherited, reinterpreted and rewritten Western literary universe. Condemned to the diaspora, the poet reads the official history of the Portuguese people with dismay and rewrites it in lands of exile and war, as well as their loneliness, bitterness and disenchantment, through a kind of “synchronic poetics”. From this perspective, this article proposes a reflection on the Portuguese Manuel Alegre’s sonnets, in particular those in the anthologies Atlântico (1981) and Sonetos do Obscuro Quê (1993) as a political gesture of rupture with the Portuguese imperialist tradition and its impact on the author’s poetic creation

In this work we will reconstruct, through unpublished documents preserved in the historical archive of the Accademia dei Lincei, a part of Giuseppe Schirò's life, precisely the period between 1939 and 1944. In these years he worked as secretary of the Centro di Studi per l'Albania, organ of the Reale Accademia d'Italia, and here he had the important task of coordinating and maintaining contacts with Albanian, Arbëreshë and Italian scholars who dealt with Albanian issues and who, without his contribution, would hardly have been able to build that which until then, and for a long time to follow, was the greatest cultural collaboration between Italy and Albania in all fields of knowledge

    Get PDF
EnThe profession of a sports agent, which is regulated by sector regulations, often creates problems related to the compatibility of the agent's simultaneous registration in various professional registers that have their own specific discipline. This leads to incompatibilities, which can sometimes prevent the professional from carrying out activities other than what is allowed by their own professional law. This article analyzes the issue of whether a sports agent can be registered simultaneously in the federal list and the register of lawyers, considering the peculiarities of the sports agent's profession and its proximity to the legal skills required for contractual matters

    Get PDF
EnBy now, public law reflection on risk management tends to overflow into sectors profoundly different from those of health and environmental protection, in reference to which the precautionary principle has been affirmed. In this context of expansion of the precautionary principle outside the traditional spheres of reference, the paper analyses risk management in the sports sector, and in particular in the perspective in which the precautionary and preventive approach finds its specific implementation, that is, in relation to the restricting orders on access to sports events, the so-called D.a.spo., identified as a precautionary measure by the administrative jurisprudence. The assessment of the unreliability of the person must be carried out by the administrative authority, which is called upon to make a discretionary assessment in balancing the prevailing public interest in protecting the order and safety of citizens and the private interest in free access to stadiums
