If she spends another month with me like this, I will throw myself into the sea (PPetaus 29, 8-10). Women and Family Conflict in Greco-Roman Egypt

    Get PDF
The study of the ancient family has gained the interest of scholars, as it contributes to a better understanding of the ancient world and the history of the family. In recent decades, sociologists and historians have focused their attention on theories emphasizing the conflicting interests of different family members and domestic violence in antiquity. Τhe most plentiful documentation of family disputes in the Greco-Roman world is provided by numerous papyri from Egypt. This paper aims to discuss the role of women both in the initiation and the settlement of a family dispute in the light of papyrus documents (mainly letters and petitions) from Greco-Roman Egypt. It would be of great interest to investigate the ways in which fundamental social customs and economic conditions of Roman Egypt produced everyday conflicts within the household. In addition, particular attention will be paid to how interfamilial tensions, especially between the women of the household, could affect the family's role as an economic and social unit

Une fee curieuse: Persinette de Charlotte-Rose de Caumont La Force = A fee curieuse: Persinette by Charlotte-Rose de Caumont La Force

The fairy of Charlotte-Rose de Caumont La Force's fairy tale Persinette (Rapunzel) is a complex and ambiguous figure that does not fit into a simple binary of victims and aggressors. I argue that La Force's adaptation of the fairy tale of the girl in the tower gives the fairy prominent status as one of the main characters instead of being relegated to the usual secondary role. Of the different versions of this fairy tale, La Force's is the only one with a powerful multidimensional female figure in the fairy role where she is in fact the most dynamic and fascinating character. La Force thereby gives an exceptionally positive view of a powerful female figure

    A Phenomenological Approach to Incarnation

    Get PDF
The Incarnation of the Divine is not accepted by all the religions, more than that for some of them it is scandalous to admit it, in fact between the human and the divine there is a dissimilarity so great that it is impossible to consider any similarity. To afford such a question in the essay I start from the phenomenological anthropology in order to explain the sense of the religious experience and at the same time I consider the history of the religions from the archaic ones as far as the last interpretations of Christianity. Visiting once again the contribution of Gerardus van der Leeuw I join the results of his historical research with the anthropological analyses of Edmund Husserl and Edith Stein. The two ways, the anthropological one and the historical one, are linked up in one subject, so that is possible to propose a new perspective in the field of the "phenomenology of religion". I examine the contrast between "God near us", that is the faith in His Incarnation in Christianity and "God far from us", that is the refusal of His Incarnation, particularly in Judaism, trying to prove the accomplishment and the value of Incarnation

Mikel Dufrenne: l'esperienza estetica dalla sinestesia all'utopia = Mikel Dufrenne: the aesthetic experience from synesthesia to utopia

    No full text
The aim of this essay is to examine Mikel Dufrenne's phenomenological aesthetics by focusing on the fil rouge relating his aesthetic speculations to the potential for political action resulting from them. The intertwining of aesthetics and politics occurs in Dufrenne's notion of synesthesia that, following Merleau-Ponty, is considered to be the standard modality of human perception. The latter is responsible for unveiling the potential for utopian thinking, namely that form of thought that enables us to imagine alternative possibilities of ordering and restructuring the sensible. Retracing this relation in Dufrenne's thought is useful for two reasons. First, it enables us to better grasp the complexity and eclecticism marking Dufrenne's approach to philosophical matters. Second, it is crucial to highlight the underlying relations at stake between aesthetics and politics, or art and society, thus revealing the political potential of artistic interventions

Trend of using freelancers in the post-pandemic: role of corporate governance reform and digital orientation in the moderate of digital platform

Hiring freelancers is considered one of the effective solutions to help businesses cut unnecessary costs but still achieve good operating re-sults; especially in Vietnam and many other countries around the world are fighting COVID-19. This study examines factors that will affect the hiring freelancer intentions. This is one of the first practical studies, conducted with 339 respondents from the perspective of business managers in Vietnam. The study not only predicts trends in the businesses’ freelancer hiring from the impact of COVID-19 but also makes recommendations for businesses to exploit the freelancer’s demands in developing the sharing economy. The re-sults show that businesses are really in high demand of freelancer hiring even though this may change the management structure like corporate governance reform and employee reduction or the enterprises’ operation downsizing even. Some factors such as digital platforms, corporate governance reform, and dig-ital orientation are also interested strongly by business managers; especially, there will be a strong investment in digital platform capability. These fac-tors have a huge impact on the business’s hiring freelancer intention in the development of sharing economy

Application of machine learning methods in forecasting economic growth and inflation of Vietnam

    Get PDF
Inflation and economic growth are two crucial indicators for any country in the world. In light of the importance of these two economic indicators, the forecast of economic growth and inflation has become a significant topic that national governments have traditionally prioritized. This study aims to apply popular machine learning algorithms such as KNN and MLP to build models for predicting economic growth and inflation. We also provide a comparison of the predictive accuracy between these machine learning algorithms and traditional forecasting models such as VAR and LASSO. Specifically, we employ techniques such as VAR, LASSO, KNN, and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) to construct forecasting models for Vietnam’s economic growth and inflation using data collected from 1996 to 2021. The accuracy of the models is assessed using three indices: RMSE, MAE, and MSE. The empirical results show that according to all three indicators, RMSE, MAE, and MSE, the forecasting models of economic growth and inflation by the MLP model are the most accurate. Based on the results, we have concluded that the MLP model is a valuable tool for future forecasting because it can describe the nonlinear relationships between variables in the model and visually map them
