La città insostenibile. Appunti per dis-abitare la città? = The unsustainable city. Notes for un-inhabiting the city?

    No full text
The city has always been a field of tension between the historical and the transcendental, and the urbanocene only emphasises the radical nature of this tension, as if it were a kind of original sin of human cities. The paper explores four issues relating to the urbanocene, which can be read separately but whose common thread will be immediately apparent to the reader. Finally, it attempts to put forward the hypothesis that it is necessary to activate the utopian core of the city against the loss of contemporary cities

Oltre i confini della città. "Bolle" democratiche e nuove trame relazionali = Beyond the city limits. Democratic "bubbles" and new relational plots

    No full text
The contribution critically explores the concepts of the Anthropocene and Urbanocene as hermeneutical keys to understand the intertwining of ecological crisis, urban transformations and democratic tensions in contemporary times. The Anthropocene, despite its controversial scientific validity, is interpreted as a powerful ethical-political metanarrative that calls for a critical stance against neoliberal capitalism and its socio-environmental consequences. In light of its aporias, a re-reading of the paradigm is proposed through the concept of the Urbanocene, which allows ecological dynamics to be situated within the complex metamorphosis of contemporary cities. The reflection focuses particularly on the crisis of urban democratic models, suggesting the need for new relational frameworks and participatory devices capable of transcending the traditional boundaries of the city and breaking the "bubbles" in which democracy risks becoming trapped

Buenos y malos en "Amar después de la muerte" de Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Un nuevo enfoque sobre el conflicto interreligioso de las Alpujarras

Abstract – The aim of this work is identifying new implications and prerogatives in the characters and scenes of Amar después de la muerte in order to question the widely accepted pro-Moor attitude of Pedro Calderón de la Barca. A comparative approach with another comedia by the same author has been adopted. La niña de Gómez Arias is located in the same geographic area, the Alpujarras, in a historical period characterized by conflicts between Christians and Muslims as well. First, the specific historical context of the action of the two works is introduced; secondly, the analysis of the Arabic elements and the Christian and Morisco characters in Amar después de la muerte is carried out. Lately, a new hypothesis about the dramatist’s posture in relation the Moriscos’ cause is introduced. Extra-literary factors which may have affected the choice of the set and the themes of Amar despuès de la muerte have been investigated as well.

Multimodal mediation in EAL teacher education: Scaffolding meaning-making and interaction through picturebooks

This article explores the multimodal mediation strategies employed by student teachers during picturebook read-aloud performances in English as an Additional Language (EAL). The data for the present study was gathered during a postgraduate course at the University of Udine (Italy). Using Multimodal Interaction Analysis as an analytical framework, the study focuses on two self-video recordings of student teachers' read-aloud performances and employs an innovative approach to data visualization and analysis through TMA software to generate graphs for the visual representations of modal configurations. The article discusses the co-deployment of various semiotic resources, including spoken language, gestures, facial expressions, gaze direction, orchestrated by student teachers to scaffold meaning-making and engage an imagined audience of children. The findings reveal the central role of spoken language and prosodic features in student teachers’ mediation strategies, these are complemented by the strategic use of visual modes in specific sequences. The results emphasize the need for developing student teachers' multimodal awareness and reflective practices for picturebook mediation. The study highlights also the value of Multimodal Interaction Analysis as a tool for understanding and assessing multimodal practices and offering teacher educators insights into designing activities that promote effective multimodal mediation strategies

Protest Policing and Political Dynamics: Violent Repression in Democratic Argentina

    Get PDF
This paper integrates perspectives from subnational political dynamics, social movements, and police studies to examine how police responses to protest events are shaped by political considerations alongside the specific characteristics of the protests themselves. Drawing on newspaper accounts and in-depth interviews, the study analyzes variations in police responses to protests in Argentina between 1997 and 2007-a period marked by widespread social unrest and public demonstrations. The findings suggest that, in this context, police repression and protest management were influenced not only by the nature of the protests but also by broader political decisions and entrenched illiberal structures (Behrend and Whitehead, 2017). While these dynamics are particularly evident in Argentina's federal system and history of contentious politics, they may also provide insights into broader patterns of protest policing in other contexts

Differences in Male and Female Political Communication: A Literature Review on the Specifics of Nonverbal Communication of Women in Politics

    Get PDF
The following text reviews literature on nonverbal communication of women in politics. Our analysis is primarily centred on studies published between 2005 and 2020. The majority of research in the studies covers short periods of time, ranging from several months to one year, and is focused on the Western world. The findings suggest women politicians use a specific type of communication, the so-called mixed model of communication, which includes "female" nonverbal and "male" verbal communication. Contrary to the assumptions, however, voters appreciate this relatively contradictory way of communication, and are critical, on the other hand, if the communication of women politicians is too "masculine". The findings suggest that gender stereotypes use in politics may be beneficial for women politicians
