Ophrys xvernolensis, a new hybrid between Ophrys apulica and Ophrys lutea, found in Salento (Southern Italy)
During the survey of spontaneous orchids in the surroundings of Lecce, in the 2023 season, we were contacted by colleagues about the discovery of a rare hybrid in the countryside of Acquarica di Lecce, a hamlet of the Municipality of Vernole (Lecce). This entity has been identified as a new and rare hybrid deriving from a cross between Ophrys apulica and Ophrys lutea which we have called Ophrys ×vernolensis from the name of the town of Vernole in whose territory the hamlet of Acquarica di Lecce falls. This hybrid was a single specimen in an environmental context represented by garrigue with extensive outcrops of limestone rock and sub-steppe vegetation. The specimen showed intermediate characteristics between O. lutea, mainly for the oval median sepal folded over the gynostemium with edges slightly turned backwards, of a greenish-yellow colour, for the sub-rectangular petals, for the entire shape of the labellum without humps and with a yellowish marginal band, due to the triangular shape of the stigma, the absence of pseudoeyes, and other elements of taxonomic importance; instead it recalled O. apulica for its extended petals, for the longitudinally folded labellum and its general brownish colour, the complex and wide macula, its stigmatic cavity crossed transversally by a wide brownish band and for other morphological traits. There are also many intermediate elements between the parents. The morphological characteristics allowed us to easily trace the parents, but this task was certainly facilitated by the sympatric presence of the two parental species, both in full flowering. Finally, the rich population of Ophrys apulica present in thousands of specimens in an otherwise limited space aroused amazement
Constructing Activist Translation in History. Women Translators’ Activist Engagement in Austria and Germany, 1871-1918
Although translators have been involved in a wide range of political actions and movements throughout history, much of the relevant research – particularly with regard to activism – has focused on contemporary contexts so far (exceptions include Cheung 2010; Gould, Tahmasebian 2020; Simon 1996). Using the examples of several women who were translating into German and also publicly advocating for feminist causes between 1871 and 1918 in the Austrian half of the Habsburg Empire and the German Empire, this article aims to stimulate a debate on why a historical perspective is needed to enhance our understanding of the intertwining of translation and activism. In elaborating my argument, I will draw on a broad range of primary sources, (auto-)biographical data and paratextual material and follow the gender studies scholars Elisabeth Klaus and Ulla Wischermann (2008) in their understanding of society as constituted of a single, medium and complex public sphere. By applying a broad understanding of the ‘public’ and the ‘political’, the activist potential of women’s translation work becomes visible in realms that have traditionally been understood as ‘private’ and therefore rather ‘apolitical’ spheres in society. Finally, the insights gained from this approach will not only reveal a more complex image of translation as an activist tool in the past (for women), but should also set a precedent for current theoretical debates on translation-related activism as well as for its real-life practice
EnIt is a common opinion that local dialects are now succumbing to Italian, either becoming Italianized themselves or, for the more optimistic, slowly disappearing until vanishing completely. This brief study aims to investigate this belief by examining the local dialect of Oria, a town in the province of Brindisi, which is included among those considered in the Italian Dialect Atlas survey. The analysis will focus on the data collected in Oria in 1966 by Giovan Battista Mancarella for this survey, comparing them with data gathered by administering the same (expanded and revised) questionnaire to a group of young people from Oria. The goal is to observe and document the linguistic changes that have occurred over sixty years, (In this initial study, we will examine only the vocalism and consonantism) with particular attention to the causes of these changes and, where applicable, the lexical impoverishment and flattening that may have occurred

Serializzare il fascismo: M. Il figlio del secolo e la narrazione politica nella serialità televisiva = Serializing Fascism: M. Il figlio del secolo and political narration in television seriality
In an increasingly media-saturated landscape shaped by the logic and dynamics of seriality (Mittell, 2015), contemporary audiovisual productions play a central role in constructing and disseminating political storytelling (Sgreva, 2012; Sciacca, 2000). M. Il figlio del secolo (2025), the television adaptation of Antonio Scurati's eponymous novel (2018), emerges as a paradigmatic example situated between post-seriality (Brancato, 2011) and what can be defined as pop-platform seriality - a renewed dimension that rethinks and reshapes viewing practices - in which ultra-pop aesthetics (Reynolds, 2011; Bowman, 2007) and serial forms intertwine with the historical and political representation of the rise of fascism. This contribution aims to examine this serial device from a mediological and cultural perspective, exploring how the series participates in the narration of Italian political memory by reworking the past into a communicatively effective and politically charged form. The analysis therefore focuses on three main axes: (1) the construction of Mussolini as a "serial character" positioned between the aestheticization of power and techniques of emotional engagement; (2) the hybridization of historical time and narrative present, expressed through specific stylistic and linguistic choices; (3) the role of digital platforms as new spaces of consumption and cultural politicization. Through the convergent dialogue between theories of seriality, pop culture, and contemporary political communication, the research question moves toward demonstrating how M. Il figlio del secolo operates not only as a historical narrative but also as an act of transmedia political communication, contributing to the redefinition of the memory of fascism and its translation into the languages and formats of popular serial culture
