House of the rising sun: The effect of utility-scale solar arrays on housing prices
While utility-scale solar energy is important for reducing dependence on fossil fuels, solar arrays use significant amounts of land (about 5 acres per MW of capacity) and may create local land use disamenities. This paper seeks to quantify the externalities from nearby solar arrays using the hedonic method. We study the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, which have high population densities and ambitious renewable energy goals. Using difference-in-differences, repeat sales identification strategies, results suggest that houses within 0.6 miles depreciate 1.5–3.6% following construction of a solar array. However, additional analysis reveals that this average effect is primarily driven by solar developments on farm and forest lands and in rural areas, which is intuitive given the composite impact of solar, loss of open space, and loss of rural character. For these states, the local disamenities are the same order of magnitude as the global benefits of abated carbon emissions, which helps explain local opposition to siting

Suzanne Mancini opened The-Sew-Op in 2016 after recognizing that her students at RISD had little to no sewing experience. Located in North Kingston, Rhode Island, The-Sew-Op’s goal is to provide a place where children and adults can learn to sew. Regarding location, a storefront close to a school was important. When local tailoring and quilting stores closed, Suzanne hired staff to do alterations and teach quilting classes. After four years in business, the pandemic struck. Rhode Island Commerce helped Suzanne design a website with a large interface, saving her business. She is now in a bigger store with parking, but still near Wickford Middle School
Communicating Moral Responsibility: Stakeholder Capitalism, Types, and Perceptions
With stakeholder capitalism being the new mantra for corporate moral responsibility, the question of how corporations’ moral commitments inconsistent with their executions would variably influence internal and external stakeholders and for different types of stakeholder capitalism issues remains unanswered. Using a 2 (inconsistency: present/absent) x 2 (stakeholder: internal/external) × 5 (stakeholder-capitalism issues: worker/environment/shareholder/customer/community) between-subjects experiment, this study investigated the variable impact on stakeholders’ corporate hypocrisy perceptions. With data collected from 1296 U.S. stakeholders, ANOVA results revealed that corporate moral responsibility messages-action inconsistency generates hypocrisy among stakeholders such that external stakeholders, namely consumers, experienced higher hypocrisy than internal ones, namely employees. The context of corporate moral responsibility (i.e., the types of stakeholder-capitalism issues) did not moderate resulting perceptions, but these issues directly impacted hypocrisy perceptions. These perceptions varied between external and internal stakeholders for different issues; the highest hypocrisy was recorded for shareholders and workers issues. Thus, the focus of this research was foregrounded on corporations’ moral responsibilities perceived as inconsistent with their execution to present a comparative analysis of different groups of stakeholders’ responses and devise effective solutions
Understanding and modeling tephra transport: lessons learned from the 18 May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens
Discoveries made during the 18 May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens advanced our understanding of tephra transport and deposition in fundamental ways. The eruption enabled detailed, quantitative observations of downwind cloud movement and particle sedimentation, along with the dynamics of co-pyroclastic-density current (PDC) clouds lofted from ground-hugging currents. The deposit was mapped and sampled over more than 150,000 km2 within days of the event and remains among the most thoroughly documented tephra deposits in the world. Abundant observations were made possible by the large size of the eruption, its occurrence in good weather during daylight hours, cloud movement over a large, populated continent, and the availability of images from recently deployed satellites. These observations underpinned new, quantitative models for the rise and growth of volcanic plumes, the importance of umbrella clouds in dispersing ash, and the roles of particle aggregation and gravitational instabilities in removing ash from the atmosphere. Exceptional detail in the eruption chronology and deposit characterization helped identify the eruptive phases contributing to deposition in different sectors of the distal deposit. The eruption was the first to significantly impact civil aviation, leading to the earliest documented case of in-flight engine damage. Continued eruptive activity in 1980 also motivated pioneering use of meteorological models to forecast ash-cloud movement. Pre-vaporized ignition behavior of ethyl- and propyl-terminated oxymethylene ethers
Oxymethylene ethers (OMEs) have been studied in recent years for use as compression ignition fuel blendstocks, but the methyl-terminated OMEs commonly studied exhibit properties that are poorly optimized for engine use and distribution. Recent work has shown that OMEs with larger (ethyl, propyl, or butyl) end groups may have superior properties for fuel usage/storage. In this work, we consider ignition of four OMEs - diethoxymethane (E-1-E), dipropoxymethane (P-1-P), ethoxy-(methoxy)2-ethane (E-2-E), and diisopropoxymethane (iP-1-iP) - as representatives of the possible effects of changes to OME structures. To our knowledge, ignition behaviors of the latter three fuels have not been studied prior to this work. We find that all of the tested linear OMEs (E-1-E, P-1-P, and E-2-E) show two-stage ignition at low temperatures and nonlinear ignition behavior, consistent with literature on methyl-terminated OMEs and E-1-E. The nonlinear, branched OME (iP-1-iP) required higher pressure and temperature to ignite than the linear OMEs; further, this fuel experienced only single stage ignition and a linear ignition delay curve. By analogy to existing kinetic mechanisms for ethers and higher alcohols, the chemical basis for the observed trends are hypothesized. Faster ignition of E-2-E results from the additional oxymethylene group providing additional sites for ROO formation and more possible QOOH structures. Slower low temperature ignition of P-1-P is driven by lower H abstraction rates in comparison to E-1-E, however at high temperatures P-1-P ignites faster, driven by increasing abstraction from the additional H site on the propyl group that opens up additional QOOH formation pathways. iP-1-iP ignition is slowed significantly by preferential H abstraction from the central carbon of the isopropyl group, which is crowded and unlikely to bond with O2, however at high temperatures, abstraction from H sites on the methyl groups allows for the ROO cascade initiation and subsequent rapid ignition
Comparative Safety Analysis of Opioid Agonist Treatment in Pregnant Women with Opioid Use Disorder: A Population-Based Study
Introduction and Objective:
Receipt of opioid agonist treatment during early and late pregnancy for opioid use disorder may relate to varying perinatal risks. We aimed to assess the effect of time-varying prenatal exposure to opioid agonist treatment using buprenorphine or methadone on adverse neonatal and pregnancy outcomes.
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective cohort study of pregnant women with opioid use disorder using Rhode Island Medicaid claims data and vital statistics during 2008–16. Time-varying exposure was evaluated in early (0–20 weeks) and late (≥ 21 weeks) pregnancy. Marginal structural models with inverse probability of treatment weighting were applied.
Results:
Of 400 eligible pregnancies, 85 and 137 individuals received buprenorphine and methadone, respectively, during early pregnancy. Compared with 152 untreated pregnancies with opioid use disorders, methadone exposure in both periods was associated with an increased risk of preterm birth (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.52; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07–5.95), low birth weight (aOR: 2.99; 95% CI 1.34–6.66), neonatal intensive care unit admission (aOR, 5.04; 95% CI 2.49–10.21), neonatal abstinence syndrome (aOR: 11.36; 95% CI 5.65–22.82), respiratory symptoms (aOR, 2.71; 95% CI 1.17–6.24), and maternal hospital stay \u3e 7 days (aOR, 14.51; 95% CI 7.23–29.12). Similar patterns emerged for buprenorphine regarding neonatal abstinence syndrome (aOR: 10.27; 95% CI 4.91–21.47) and extended maternal hospital stay (aOR: 3.84; 95% CI 1.83–8.07). However, differences were found favoring the use of buprenorphine for preterm birth versus untreated pregnancies (aOR: 0.17; 95% CI 0.04–0.77), and for several outcomes versus methadone.
Conclusions:
Methadone and buprenorphine prescribed for the treatment of opioid use disorder during pregnancy are associated with varying perinatal risks. However, buprenorphine may be preferred in the setting of pregnancy opioid agonist treatment. Further research is necessary to confirm our findings and minimize residual confounding
