    The Rise in Cybercrime and the Dynamics of Exploiting the Human Vulnerability Factor

    This paper is primarily intended to firstly define and review the literature in cybersecurity and vividly shed light on the mechanisms involved in the social engineering phenomenon. It will discuss the various attempts at network intrusion and the steps typically taken in the implementation of cyber-thefts. The paper will provide the rationale behind the justification of why humans are considered to be the weakest link in these attacks. The study will also explain the reasons for the rise in cybercrimes and their impact on Organizations. In closing, the paper will put forward some recommendations to serve as preventative measures and solutions to the threats and vulnerabilities posed by cyber-attacks. Finally, measures, such as conducting regular, thorough, and relevant awareness training, frequent drills and realistic tests will be addressed with a view to maintaining a steady focus on the overall discipline of the organization thereby hardening that component of the network that is the softest by nature—the human vulnerability factor

    A Computer Vision Non-Contact 3D System to Improve Fingerprint Acquisition

    The fingerprint is one of the most important biometrics, with many acquisition methods developed over the years. Traditional 2D acquisition techniques produce nonlinear distortions due to the forced flattening of the finger onto a 2D surface. These random elastic deformations often introduce matching errors, making 2D techniques less reliable. Inevitably non-contact 3D capturing techniques were developed in an effort to deal with these problems. In this study we present a novel non-contact single camera 3D fingerprint reconstruction system based on fringe projection and a new model for approximating the epidermal ridges. The 3D shape of the fingerprint is reconstructed from a single 2D shading image in two steps. First the original image is decomposed into structure and texture components by an advanced Meyer algorithm. The structural component is reconstructed by a classical fringe projection technique. The textural component, containing the fingerprint information, is restored using a specialized photometric algorithm we call Cylindrical Ridge Model (CRM). CRM is a photometric algorithm that takes advantage of the axial symmetry of the ridges in order to integrate the illumination equation. The two results are combined together to form the 3D fingerprint, which is then digitally unfolded onto a 2D plane for compatibility with traditional 2D impressions. This paper describes the prototype 3D imaging system developed along with the calibration procedure, the reconstruction algorithm and the unwrapping process of the resulting 3D fingerprint, necessary for the performance evaluation of the method.

    Birth Notification Service for Civil Registration in Kenya - SOA Model

    The aim of this study was to investigate application of modern ICT technologies in solving birth notification problems in rural communities and the sharing of birth information with various stakeholders. The specific objectives that study sought to address include; investigation of current birth notification system in Kenya, the processes, finding the appropriateness of application of service oriented architecture in designing and developing a prototype for birth notification solution. The intention was to allow real time pre-notification of birth events by parents, verification of that information by local agents, and sharing of that data for use by other government agents. The events that take place in hospitals were also included in a broad solution. The study used two approaches where case study of a remote Sub County of injara in Garissa County was used to study rural events and processes. In this approach interviews and questionnaires were used to evaluate current processes as well as enquire the applicability of intended solution. Then IT product design and development was used to develop prototype based on service oriented methodology [1]. This is an iterative and incremental process of transforming organizational business processes to services until services are developed, deployed and can execute as expected. The prototype was developed where parents and guardians would notify birth events as soon as they happen, using SMS, web portal or mobile application. The testing and evaluation findings revealed that application of integrated services of SMS, Web application and Mobile application have positive implications in birth notification process. Study also found that these integrated services can improve birth notification experience both for rural events and hospital events as well as provide real time data for other consumers such as national health care insurers as well as statistical data consumers

    Multi Agents Classification System with Reliable Measure of Generalization

    In this paper an efficient classification system using hierarchal multi_agent\u27s technology based on neural network is introduced, where each agent implements as a neuraogy effort to o do thisl network (trained using back propagation learning algorithm). The system consist of two layers of agents, the top layer contain one agent works as control agent, its responsibility is to select the right agent from the agents in the lower layer to classify the related pattern depending on data’s features. Two techniques were used (regularization and earlier stopping criteria) to select the best one for each data set depending . The system provides a degree of generalization with the ability to improve it if there is a need for more generalization. The developed system was tested using different standard datasets obtained from the (University of California, Irvine) UCI Machine Learning Repository for the empirical analysis of machine learning algorithms. These are (User Knowledge Level, iris, and Banknote Authentication Dataset)

    Focus on the Internet of Burkina: Measurement and Characterization

    Understanding the Internet topology and its modeling is important for many applications. In this paper we focus on a local area of the Internet topology at the scale of a country, to study its properties and characterize this local topology. We discuss our results compared to usual assumptions on the properties of Internet topology. Our study shows non trivial results. As a fractal, we find on a small scale of the Internet topology, some properties of the entire Internet like the power-law degree distribution and a weak density

Every year IT trainers are sent to train IT to the rural people. But it forms a major challenge because the Government organization, Non-Government Organization (NGO), volunteer IT trainer do not know which rural people have already been taught IT skills and if taught then which level of IT knowledge they have? To resolve these issues an online Training Management System for rural Information Communication Technology training will were designed and discussed in this paper.The finding reported that, there are three different constituents and they are: convenience of the system, excellence of the content and the features of the interface, also the survey findings indicated a high level of satisfaction with the Online Training Management for rural ICT trainee

    Identity Theft Mitigation in Kenyan Financial Sectors (SACCOs): Handwritten Signature Verification

    The existence of identity theft in society has become a major concern due to the effects it causes to those that are affected by it, more especially in the financial sector. Thus this thesis establishes the existence of identity theft issues in the financial sector loan sections and proposes an algorithm that addresses the mitigation processes of identity theft by having the signatures on the loan forms verified using the implementation of the proposed algorithm, then the results are compared with the human experts verification that are done on a daily basis. From the qualitative data collected from the four SACCOs presented indicate the 93% of the respondents knew that forgery of one’s signature in the SACCO exists and from the 93%, 95% of them had been victims of identity theft and 50% of them knew it after deductions were been made from their accounts. The algorithm was implemented in a prototype that was used to test the signatures that were corrected from various individuals that belonged to various SACCOs. The prototype had successfully verified 80.1% of the test signatures and as expected the highest results from the four Human experts verification of forged signature was 8.3% indicating that they had indicated more signatures as originals. The prototype thus recorded an accuracy of 91.4% and a precision of 60.0%.

    Enhancing the Management of Student’s Examination Records using an Interactive Website for Tertiary Institutions in Ghana

    Most tertiary institutions in Ghana still employ the manual process in students’ academic records management process. Updates to records are poorly implemented which results in severe inconsistencies in students records. Generation of Reports to undertake strategic decisions usually takes a lot of time and often generated with errors. Additionally, end of semester results which is supposed to be confidential is usually posted on notice boards for students to access. Prospective students and the general public who need information regarding any aspect of the institution instead of doing so with ease, would either have to spend so much time to contact the institution and may not even be given the needed information. This research seeks to develop a very secure system which will not only provide relevant up-to-date information relating to all aspects of the institution, but also for processing students examination records and online results checking. The system will also provide an internal commincation system between the system administrator and both lecturers and students.

    State of the Art Computational Ternary Logic Currnent-Mode Circuits Based on CNTFET Technology

    Computational operations are considered as a time-consuming and important operation in ALU. These circuits play major role in computational operation in processing unit. This paper presents new computational Ternary Current Mode Circuits including comparator, multiplexer, decoder, and exclusive OR by means of Carbon NanoTube Field Effect Transistors. The new designs rely on three major parts: 1) the input currents which are converted to voltage; 2) threshold detectors; and 3) the output current flow paths to generate the outputs. The designs have been simulated based on 32nm CNFTET using Synopsys Hspice simulator

Cloud computing has therefore enhanced the freedom of interaction on social media that has made most users to freely share personal information via social media as well as storage of information into the cloud computing systems. Accumulation of diverse information raises problems related to data security that has prompted the need for maintaining personal data private and improvement of the trust towards the service provider. This study investigates the privacy concerns that arises from the use of cloud technology in social networks and provides a recommendation on the measures that needs to be enforced to secure personal information stored over the cloud
