Students' low chemical literacy and scientific attitudes in understanding chemical concepts, particularly in green chemistry, pose significant challenges in chemistry education today. Traditional learning models are often less effective in fostering 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving, which are essential for a more relevant and applicable chemistry education. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a STEM integrated with Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on students' chemical literacy and scientific attitudes in green chemistry. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study involved two experimental classes and two control classes. Each group participated in pretests and posttests to assess their chemical literacy and scientific attitudes. The analysis revealed that the PBL-STEM model significantly enhanced students' chemical literacy (N-Gain = 0.54) and scientific attitudes (N-Gain = 0.46) compared to traditional learning methods. Although the improvement in scientific attitudes was more pronounced, the increase in chemical literacy was relatively lower, indicating the necessity for adjustments in instructional approaches to deepen students' understanding of chemical concepts. The integration of green chemistry principles within the PBL-STEM model effectively connected chemistry education with global environmental challenges while also fostering 21st-century skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. This study concludes that the PBL-STEM model presents a promising alternative for enhancing the quality of chemistry education and preparing students to navigate the complexities of an ever-evolving world.

    No full text
Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are a prevalent issue among lathe operators in small automotive repair workshops, largely due to repetitive movements, prolonged static positions, and awkward postures. This study employed the Nordic Body Map (NBM) and Workplace Ergonomic Risk Assessment (WERA) to evaluate ergonomic risks and identify affected body areas among lathe operators at XYZ workshop. Results indicate significant discomfort in the lower back, neck, shoulders, and wrists, linked to static postures and repetitive motions required for lathe operations. WERA scores revealed moderate ergonomic risks, particularly involving shoulder posture and work duration. Visual summaries in the form of bar and radar charts illustrate key risk factors. To mitigate these risks, the study proposes low-cost ergonomic interventions such as workstation adjustments, anti-vibration gloves, regular breaks, posture training, and rotational work schedules. These interventions not only address immediate discomfort but also have long-term potential for reducing MSDs when integrated into worker training programs. Moreover, the study’s findings can be utilized as contextual learning materials within applied science education (IPA terapan) at vocational schools (SMK), fostering ergonomic literacy among students and educators. This study fills a significant gap in ergonomic research in informal micro-industry settings and offers actionable insights for both occupational health improvement and science-based curriculum development in vocational education

    No full text
Mother Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) is the primary route of HIV infection in children under 14 years. Despite the expansion of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programs and increased antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage, 17,000 children aged 0–14 years were living with HIV in Indonesia in 2023. This retrospective study analyzed infants born to HIV-positive mothers between January 2018 and December 2022, including only those with HIV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test results. Of 86 infants, 21 (24.4%) tested positive for HIV, while 65 (75.6%) tested negative. Among those with positive results, 76.2% had an APGAR score <7, 90.5% were term, and 85.7% had a birth weight of ≥2500 grams. All infants received ART prophylaxis, and 91.9% were formula-fed. Infants whose mothers did not receive ART before birth or during labor had a 15-fold higher risk of HIV infection. Additionally, discontinuation of ART prophylaxis before six weeks of age increased the risk fourfold. These findings highlight the importance of early detection of HIV in pregnant women, optimising ART adherence during pregnancy, and providing ART prophylaxis to infants to reduce HIV transmission. Strengthening prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programmes is needed to reduce infant HIV cases in high-prevalence areas such as Papua

Air Management in Chemistry Laboratories to Prevent Sick Building Syndrome (SBS): A Mixed-Method Approach

    No full text
Chemistry laboratories are inherently high-risk environments where poor Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) can contribute to Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)—a condition marked by symptoms such as headaches, respiratory irritation, and reduced concentration, which negatively affect user productivity and well-being. Ensuring optimal air circulation is critical to maintaining thermal comfort, air quality, and compliance with occupational health and safety standards. This study adopts a mixed-method approach using a sequential exploratory design to investigate user comfort perceptions in chemistry laboratories. Data were collected through surveys of 50 respondents from five educational institutions to capture the Voice of Customer (VoC) regarding environmental comfort. Qualitative findings were enriched through benchmarking and further analyzed using the House of Quality (HoQ) method to identify air circulation deficiencies and prioritize improvements. The analysis revealed that educational laboratories underperform in temperature control, humidity regulation, and air freshness when compared to industrial and training laboratories. Key factors affecting comfort include air circulation pathways (score = 42) and air regulation mechanisms (score = 36), followed by circulation points (score = 21) and air conditioning systems (score = 11). The proposed solution involves integrating cassette-type air conditioners with a Louver Fresh Air (LFA) system to enhance thermal stability and ensure fresh air exchange. These improvements are vital for preventing SBS, enhancing user well-being, and supporting effective laboratory-based learning
