Effective and ineffective academic writing support for ESL students: A higher education perspective
Academic writing presents significant challenges for students who use English as a second language, often affecting students’ academic performance and progress. Given its critical role in academic success, various institutions have introduced various support approaches to enhance students’ writing skills. However, ongoing challenges suggest that these approaches vary in effectiveness. This study explored the effective and ineffective academic writing support approaches. Employing a literature review analysis, questionnaire, and interview, the study collected data within the framework of transactional distance theory. Findings indicate that scaffolded writing support is a highly effective pedagogical approach, as it systematically deconstructs the writing process into manageable steps. Other effective approaches include explicit and timely feedback, tailored writing instruction, simplified academic language, structured peer-review sessions, and enhanced accessibility to writing resources. In contrast, ineffective approaches involved the use of complex academic language, text-heavy materials, information overload, limited engagement time, and a lack of practical exercises, all of which hinder students’ ability to internalize key writing concepts. Additional challenges include language barriers, vague feedback, and unstructured peer-review sessions. The study contributes to the refinement of curriculum design, academic writing support approaches, and English as a Second Language support structures by promoting feedback-driven and student-centered interventions that align with students’ needs, ultimately improving writing outcomes, enhancing retention rates, and reducing failure rates. An analysis of grade 6 English first additional language reading comprehension questions in CAPS-aligned examinations
Reading comprehension, a crucial skill for successful text interaction, remains a significant challenge for many South African learners, as evidenced by their persistent difficulties in answering comprehension questions. This struggle underscores the importance of examining how comprehension assessments are designed and implemented. The South African curriculum assessment policy statement (CAPS) mandates a variety of cognitive levels in reading tests, using Barrett's taxonomy for question design. However, there is a lack of research examining whether the reading comprehension questions in grade 6 English first additional language (EFAL) exams align with the cognitive levels. The purpose of this study is to examine the alignment of grade 6 EFA reading comprehension questions with the cognitive levels. The study employs Barrett’s taxonomy framework to categorize and evaluate reading comprehension questions in grade 6 EFAL exams. The results show a striking imbalance between actual question distributions and CAPS benchmarks: lower-order questions dominated at 68.75% (Paper 1) and 63.16% (Paper 2), far exceeding the CAPS target of 40%, inferential questions reached only 25.00% (Paper 1) and 26.32% (Paper 2), falling short of the 40% requirement, higher-order questions were critically underrepresented at 0.00% (Paper 1) and 10.53% (Paper 2), versus the 20% benchmark. The study recommends a substantive rebalancing of examination questions to achieve the CAPS-mandated distribution of cognitive levels (40% lower-order, 40% inferential, 20% higher-order)
Skrining gizi dan edukasi nutrisi untuk pencegahan masalah gizi dan metabolik komunitas e-sport
Perkembangan komunitas e-sport sebagai bagian dari transformasi gaya hidup digital menimbulkan risiko gangguan metabolik akibat pola hidup sedentari dan konsumsi makanan tinggi kalori. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi prevalensi gangguan gizi dalam komunitas e-sport serta menilai dampak edukasi gizi terhadap peningkatan pemahaman peserta mengenai pola hidup sehat. Kegiatan dilaksanakan pada 27 Mei 2025 di Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, menggunakan pendekatan partisipatif melalui pengukuran status gizi menggunakan indikator antropometri (IMT, LiLA, dan lingkar perut), dilanjutkan dengan edukasi gizi interaktif. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa 38,9% responden memiliki status gizi normal, 44,5% mengalami obesitas, 5,6% overweight, dan 11,1% underweight. Berdasarkan pengukuran lingkar perut, 33,3% peserta teridentifikasi mengalami obesitas abdominal, sementara 5,6% terindikasi mengalami Kekurangan Energi Kronis (KEK) berdasarkan LiLA. Edukasi yang diberikan terbukti meningkatkan pemahaman peserta tentang pentingnya konsumsi makanan seimbang, aktivitas fisik teratur, dan penerapan gaya hidup sehat untuk menurunkan risiko gangguan metabolik, seperti obesitas dan sindrom metabolik. Kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa intervensi gizi berbasis komunitas memiliki potensi signifikan dalam meningkatkan kesadaran dan perilaku sehat pada kelompok masyarakat digital, serta perlu dilanjutkan secara berkelanjutan untuk mencegah masalah kesehatan metabolik di masa mendatang
Penguatan kapasitas masyarakat melalui penerapan model koperasi berkelanjutan
Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan literasi koperasi, memperkuat kapasitas pengelolaan, dan mendorong kemandirian ekonomi masyarakat melalui penguatan peran Credit Union Keling Kumang sebagai model koperasi berbasis anggota. Metode yang digunakan adalah Participatory Action Research (PAR) dengan teknik diskusi interaktif, tanya jawab terarah, dan simulasi praktik. Pendekatan ini dipilih karena mampu melibatkan peserta secara aktif dalam menganalisis masalah, merumuskan solusi, dan mempraktikkan keterampilan pengelolaan koperasi sesuai kebutuhan lokal. Kegiatan diikuti oleh 35 peserta yang terdiri dari pengurus dan anggota koperasi. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan pada tiga dimensi capaian: pengetahuan peserta mengenai prinsip koperasi meningkat dari 34% menjadi 82%, motivasi menabung secara rutin naik dari 28% menjadi 76%, serta jumlah anggota baru Credit Union bertambah 21% dalam tiga minggu pasca kegiatan. Selain itu, rata-rata simpanan anggota meningkat sebesar 15%, dan partisipasi anak usia sekolah di wilayah sasaran naik dari 87% menjadi 94%. Dampak jangka panjang dari program ini diproyeksikan mencakup terbentuknya kebiasaan menabung yang konsisten, tata kelola koperasi yang lebih profesional, dan adopsi teknologi digital untuk memperluas layanan. Model kegiatan ini berpotensi direplikasi di wilayah lain dengan penyesuaian konteks lokal, khususnya pada daerah dengan tingkat literasi koperasi yang rendah. Konsep spin-out, yaitu pengembangan unit usaha baru berbasis koperasi, diperkenalkan sebagai strategi diversifikasi usaha yang dapat memperkuat ketahanan ekonomi anggota. Kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi pendekatan partisipatif, pembelajaran berbasis pengalaman, dan dukungan kelembagaan dapat menghasilkan perubahan nyata dalam literasi, sikap, dan keterampilan anggota koperasi, sekaligus memberikan landasan bagi pemberdayaan ekonomi masyarakat secara berkelanjutan
Yield Performance And Quality Of Peashoot Microgreens From Seeds Soaked In Varied Concentrations Of Cacl₂ Utilizing Different Water Types
Microgreens are small vegetables harvested at young age (7-14 days after planting) and are more nutritious than those harvested in mature stage. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of pre-soaked seed using different concentrations of CaCl2 and watering using different types of water on the yield and quality of micro-green peashoots. This study used factorial randomised design of blocks with two factors. The first factor was the pre- soaked seeds with several concentrations of CaCl2, three levels of 0, 0.5 and 1. The second factor is the difference in the type of water, which is made up of three types ( well water, mineral water and destilled water). The results showed that there was no significant interaction between the treatments on the yield and quality of the micro-greens. Separately, the treatment of pre-soaked seedusing some CaCl2 concentration had a significant effect on the fresh weight per box and on the fresh weight of the shoots. Treatment with 0.5 percent CaCl2 resulted in the best fresh weight per box (160.42 g) and the best weight per microgreen shoots (76.63 g). Microgreens soaked in mineral water had the highest weight of shoots (73.85 g) and the highest of ash content (3.59 mg). The results of the organoleptic test showed that the microgreen peashoot was relatively favored by consumers in terms of taste and color. Based on the results of this study, a pre-planting seed soaking treatment using a 0.5% CaCl2 solution is recommended. Mineral water has good prospects for application in microgreen peashoot cultivation to produce good shoot weight and high fiber and mineral quality
Mathematical Problem-Solving Abilities with a Metacognitive Approach at High School Students
Problem solving is a sequence of mental processes for resolving an issue varying from comprehending the problem to reassessing the outcomes of addressing the problem. This research aimed to explore mathematical problem-solving examined through students' metacognitive capacities. This investigation is a descriptive study using a qualitative method. The participants in this research were students of the 10th grade of Maarif Lawang High School, comprising 6 individuals. Data gathering methods in the shape of assessments and paired discussions. Data interpretation methods are carried out through data collection, data compression, data display, and inference drawing. The findings revealed that learners in the high category fulfilled all signs ranging from the first to the fourth, and learners in the moderate categories fulfilled one to three signs on each query. In contrast, learners in the low category only met one distinct sign on each provided query. The inference is that learners in the high category fulfill all metacognitive signs, learners in the moderate category fulfill only three signs, and learners in the low category fulfill various signs. Recommendations for future researchers are encouraged to conduct further investigations with progressively extensive and diverse participants to ensure the acquired information is more comprehensive
Development of English materials for sustainable tourism based on technology
The development of English teaching materials related to sustainable tourism in vocational high schools still faces various challenges, despite the significant growth of the tourism industry in Indonesia. This Community Service Program aims to enhance the teaching abilities of English teachers at vocational high schools in Malang by helping them develop teaching materials that incorporate various aspects of sustainable tourism through an intensive educational and mentoring approach. A total of 20 teachers participated in this workshop and training program. During implementation, they received training to develop online learning materials that simultaneously enhance reading, listening, and writing skills while also providing practice in tour guiding. Additionally, they were trained in utilizing technology to present interactive teaching materials aligned with advancements in the modern tourism industry. As a result, the teachers' ability to develop digital-based learning materials improved significantly, enabling them to guide students more effectively. In line with the teachers' enhanced ability to design innovative and sustainable learning materials, this initiative aims to raise educational standards at the vocational high school level and support students in adapting to advancements in the tourism industry
Pemanfaatan pekarangan rumah untuk budidaya TOGA sebagai upaya meningkatkan kesehatan keluarga
Kesehatan keluarga merupakan faktor utama dalam meningkatkan kualitas hidup, namun pemanfaatan Tanaman Obat Keluarga (TOGA) di pekarangan rumah masih terbatas akibat kurangnya pengetahuan dan keterampilan, terutama di kalangan ibu rumah tangga. Program pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan peran ibu rumah tangga dalam budidaya dan pemanfaatan TOGA melalui edukasi dan pelatihan di Gampong Keuramat, Kecamatan Kuta Alam, Banda Aceh. Metode yang digunakan meliputi sosialisasi berbasis media leaflet dan presentasi, serta pelatihan praktik budidaya dan pengolahan hasil TOGA menjadi produk bernilai tambah. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui pre-test dan post-test, serta survei kepuasan peserta. Hasil menunjukkan lebih dari 90% peserta mampu mengaplikasikan materi yang diberikan, serta lebih dari 85% menyatakan kepuasan terhadap program pengabdian. Program ini tidak hanya meningkatkan keterampilan ibu rumah tangga dalam pemanfaatan TOGA untuk kesehatan keluarga, tetapi juga membuka peluang ekonomi melalui produksi jamu dan makanan fungsional. Meskipun masih terdapat tantangan dalam keberlanjutan program, hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa edukasi dan pelatihan dapat memberdayakan ibu rumah tangga sebagai agen perubahan dalam meningkatkan kesehatan keluarga dan berpotensi direplikasi di daerah lain
Meningkatkan pemahaman mahasiswa tentang sistem manajemen pemeliharaan untuk kinerja unggul di industri
Perkembangan teknologi secara dinamis di industri menuntut mahasiswa untuk adaptif secara cepat mengetahui mengenai manajemen perawatan dan perbaikan dengan baik. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian ini untuk meningkatkan pemahaman sistem manajemen perawatan dan perbaikan (pemeliharaan) secara optimal dapat dilihat dari performance yang baik. Peserta pelatihan diikuti sejumlah 46 mahasiswa dari Tingkat 3 Tahun Akademik 2024/2025 prodi D3 Teknik Elektronika Politeknik Negeri Malang. Metode yang digunakan Service Learning (SL) dengan tahapan pengumpulan data, pengolahan data, menyusun perencanaan, pelaksanaan kegiatan, melakukan evaluasi dan membuat pelaporan. Analisis data dari hasil observasi dan wawancara didukung data angket. Hasil kegiatan bahwa menunjukan bahwa mahasiswa mendapatkan pengetahuan mengenai pemahaman manajemen sistem pemeliharaan industri di PT Kalimantan Prima Persada sehingga mahasiswa secara procedural dan teknis. Program ini mendorong kolaborasi aktif antara civitas akademik dan praktisi ahli untuk menciptakan pertukaran ilmu dan keahlian yang mendalam. Diharapkan melalui Program ini, lulusan Teknik elektronika akan memperoleh pengetahuan dan keterampilan yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan dan tantangan di dunia kerja. Kepuasan peserta pelatihan mengikuti kegiatan dengan prosentase 72,6% (sangat baik), 23.9% (baik), 3,5% (cukup baik)
Penerapan Etnomatematika Melalui Permainan Bitingan Terhadap Kemampuan Literasi Numerasi Peserta Didik Kelas III SDI Tahfidz Preneur Daarul Ahsan
This study aims to examine the differences in numeracy literacy skills among Grade III students of SDI Tahfidz Preneur Daarul Ahsan who were taught through the application of ethnomathematics using bitingan games and those who received instruction through discovery learning. In addition, this research describes the improvement in students’ numeracy literacy skills following the implementation of ethnomathematics through bitingan games. The study employed a quasi-experimental method with a Control Group Pretest–Posttest design. There were two classes: an experimental class and control class. The experimental group received learning treatment through ethnomathematics-based bitingan games, while the control group was taught using the discovery learning. The data collected consisted of pretest and posttest scores. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics included the total number of participants, minimum and maximum scores, mean, standard deviation, and variance, providing an overview of students’ performance distribution. Inferential statistics, consisting of normality tests, homogeneity tests, and t-tests, were applied to determine the significance of differences between the two groups. Furthermore, the n-gain test was used to assess the extent of improvement in students’ numeracy literacy skills. The results revealed a significant difference in numeracy literacy skills between students who received ethnomathematics through bitingan games and those who received discovery learning. Based on the descriptive statistical analysis, the experimental group’s mean score was higher than that of the control group. The improvement in numeracy literacy skills in the experimental class was classified as moderate with an average n-gain value of 0.52. However, not all students in the experimental group achieved the same level of improvement, as variations were observed across low, moderate, and high improvement categories.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbedaan kemampuan literasi numerasi peserta didik kelas III SDI Tahfidz Preneur Daarul Ahsan yang diberikan penerapan etnomatematika melalui permainan bitingan dan yang tidak. Penelitian ini juga mendeskripsikan peningkatan kemampuan literasi numerasi peserta didik kelas III SDI Tahfidz Preneur Daarul ahsan setelah diberikan penerapan etnomatematika melalui permainan bitingan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kuasi eksperimen dengan desain penelitian Control Group Pretest and Posttest. Data yang dikumpulkan adalah data pretest dan posttest. Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan analisis statistik deskriptif dan analisis statistik inferensial. Hasil penelitian menyebutkan adanya perbedaam signifikan kemampuan literasi numerasi peserta didik kelas III SDI Tahfidz Preneur Daarul Ahsan yang diberikan penerapan etnomatematika melalui permainan bitingan dibandingkan dengan yang tidak diberikan penerapan etnomatematika melalui permainan bitingan. Perbedaan signifikan terlihat dari hasil analisis statistik deskriptif bahwa rata-rata nilai kelas eksperimen lebih besar dibandingkan rata-rata nilai kelas kontrol. Peningkatan kemampuan literasi numerasi berdasarkan nilai posttest kelas eksperimen berada pada kategori peningkatan sedang, dengan nilai n-gain 0,52. Hasil nilai n-gain kelas eksperimen tidak seluruhnya pada kategori peningkatan sedang. Terdapat variasi peningkatan, baik peningkatan kategori rendah, sedang ataupun tingg
