Finge Ancestral Practices and the Christian Faith: A Historical Study of the Wanabe Cult

    Get PDF
This paper examines the Wanabe ancestral practice in the Finge polity of Cameroon's northwest, showing how its encounter with Christian faith resulted in mutations that necessitated its revival. Underpinned by worship, veneration, and respect of the ancestors, the Wanabe practice enjoyed its heydays up to the time when the intrusion of Christian theology threatened its existence and relevance. Informed by existing scholarship and based on field work conducted in February 2017, it is argued that the plight of the Wanabe practice following its encounter with missionary Christianity hinged primarily on missionaries' negative perception of the practice, presenting it as an impediment to conversion to Christianity. Ensuing missionary efforts to repudiate this ancestral cult practice have met with indigenous repugnance that has ensured the revival and continuing importance of the culturally-entrenched belief system. The paper explores how the deeply religious beliefs and observances associated with the Wanabe ancestral practice posed as obstacles to the overly exclusive doctrinal conditions arrogantly and ignorantly proposed by Christian evangelizers. If the latter's ongoing efforts at adapting Christian theology to the non-Christian Finge religio-cultural background should uphold the labeling of indigenous cosmology as worthless for Christianity, then the value of religious traditions meeting each other would be missed

    Get PDF
This paper pays much emphasis on the relationship between economic growth and international trade in South Korea. Via using the ordinary least square to perform an empirical analysis, Findings illustrate that the long-run, steady and equilibrium relationship among economic growth, import trade and export trade exists. And the empirical analysis results reveal that an increase in the economic growth will result in an increase in the import trade and export trade in South Korea. More importantly, the export-oriented economy has a very significant effect on economic growth. Also, the import trade not only promotes the economic growth but also promotes the export trade. As a matter of fact, the main purpose of this paper is to make relationship between economic growth and international trade clear for the policy-makers to take good measures when the economy falls into a recession such as global economic crisis in 2008

Public Infrastructure vs. Residential Property Rental Value in Lagos, Nigeria

    Get PDF
Basic infrastructures have suffered major neglect over a long period of time in many Nigerian cities. Yet, the efficiency of any form of human activity largely depends on the provision of efficient infrastructure which in turn affect the demand and choice of residential property. This study examined the impact of infrastructure provision on property values in Lagos, Nigeria. Questionnaires were administered on residents across the low, medium and high residential neighbourhoods as well as registered Estate Surveyors and Valuers in Lagos State. Data was analysed by both descriptive and inferential statistical tools. The study revealed that infrastructure provision has a population magnet attracting more people to settling in a particular neighbourhood. The model summary for regression of the effect of infrastructures on property values further revealed 99.8%, 99.3% and 99.7% of the sampled variations in low, medium and high density areas respectively are attributed to the residential rental value. Fair and equal distribution of infrastructures is hence recommended to reduce discrimination on the basis of availability. Also, government should embark on site and service scheme to provide infrastructures and other amenities that will enhance property values in the less accessible areas

Measuring Urban Sustainability through Compact City Approach: A Case Study of Lahore

    Get PDF
Achieving urban sustainability has become a prime goal for urban planners. However due to its subjective nature, it is complicated to integrate urban sustainability concept in planning practices. Moreover, it is advocated that measure of urban sustainability through the compact city is a vital solution for city management. However, due to dynamic nature of the city structures around the world, there exists a limited consensus on parameters and dimensions to measure urban compactness especially in the towns developed in unplanned manners. This study aims to explore different dimensions and relevant indicators to understand and measure compactness in the context of Lahore. The findings of the research reflected that the key factors for the urban sustainability in a compact city are density, transportation and landuse. Density profile in Lahore shows that new residential schemes are rapidly occupying the vacant land and consequently increasing average trip distances and urban sprawl. Besides this, landuse breakup in Lahore is highly variant because of the rapid change in its uses. Average land consumption per person in Lahore is 51 square meter which is on the lower side and would have grave consequences for public rely on car use in future. Moreover, public transport accessibility in Lahore is another problem faced by the general public. Finally, it is concluded that Lahore is a compact city to some extent with the absence of sustainability concepts due to lack of regularity authority control and haphazard development. The situation needs immediate attention of authorities otherwise use of public transportation will be decline and cars will encroach major part of ones' land consumption

    Get PDF
This study was conducted to preliminarily determine present drinking water quality of selected District II communities in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. Five community stations (total twenty stations) were established covering three months tap water monitoring. All samples were analyzed using portable meters determining the pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, conductivity, salinity, turbidity, and total dissolved solids (TDS) Overall, all studied tap water samples from selected stations passed the drinking water regulations except for conductivity (Risk quotient>1). Similarly, both pH and turbidity analyses showed a sampling date specific variations (p<0.05) while the analyses of temperature and salinity showed station specific variations (p<0.05). A strong correlation of studied parameters was also found between conductivity-salinity (r = 0.98); conductivity-TDS (r = 0.90); and salinity-TDS (r = 0.92). Extrapolating from this it can be concluded that the tap water samples were safe to drink. The study was preliminary and further analyses incorporating metals, pathogens, and organics may be needed

Block Design Attributes and Residents Livability in Ogbomoso, Nigeria

    Get PDF
The major brunt of inefficient planning is bore by residents within the area most proximal to their living, working, shopping or playing spaces. Against this background, the study analyses the livability correlates of block layout designs in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. Google Earth (2016) application was used to randomly capture 20 salient areas of the city using quadrant method. A questionnaire was also administered to 610 residents in a multi stage sampling procedure to elicit information on block layout performance and residents livability. Likert scaling was used to summarize ordinal data.  Chi-square was used to explain the variation in the quality of block design across residential areas. Regression analysis was also used to explain the relationship between the quality of block design and environmental liveability. A reliable interdependence was observed (R = .701) between residents liveability index (RLI) and block design index (BDI). The study thus recommended an active joint participation involving the government through town planners and the developers to foster efficient city design of blocks and to guarantee liveable communities

    Get PDF
We administered either a Guilty or an Ambiguous version of a fatal hit-and-run accident involving one's favorite sport celebrity, a measure of schadenfreude, and a version of the Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS) modified to target one's favorite sport celebrity to 77 Black and 119 White college students. Results of two ANOVAs showed that Black students who chose Black favorite sport celebrities showed a significantly stronger admiration for their favorite sport celebrity, but significantly greater schadenfreude as compared to White students who chose favorite sport celebrities who were White. There were no other main effects or interactions. Schadenfreude scores were lower as compared to previous studies in which target persons were maliciously envied or deserving of misfortune. There was an inverse correlation between schadenfreude scores and reported strength of the bond with the favorite sport celebrity as measured by the single item "How strongly do you feel about your favorite sport celebrity/" and scores on the sport version of the Celebrity Attitude Scale. Results were discussed with a focus on racial differences and the failure to find a difference due to certainty of guilt
