An Analysis of the Role of Women in Curbing Energy Poverty in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Despite Nigeria's abundance of fossil and renewable energy resources, Nigerians still experience acute energy poverty; they either lack access to modern energy sources or have to cope with inadequate supply and poor quality. Close to 95 million people are fully reliant on traditional woodstoves for cooking.  Poor access to energy is directly affecting livelihoods, lowering quality of life and hurting the economy. Poor Energy Access is the root of energy poverty, it leads to drudgery, greater health risks, severely undermines health, inhibits education, limits livelihood opportunities, and reduces the chances for the poor to rise out of poverty, ultimately diminishing the world's chances to successfully achieve the SDGs by 2030. Even though global efforts are headed in the right direction to end energy poverty, the rate of interventions is far behind the population growth rate and calls for dramatic accelerations in mobilizing resources to increase access to renewable energy alternatives. This study explores and emphasises that women are not only a special interest group in using renewable energy to alleviate energy poverty in Nigeria; they are the mainstream users and often producers of energy, it has become glaring that women are the fastest growing cohort of entrepreneurs and business owners in many developing countries especially Nigeria.  Without their involvement, renewable energy projects risk being inappropriate and failing. Energy researchers who will leave women out of energy research and analysis will be failing to understand a large part of energy consumption and production all over the world. Women are a key resource in the energy service delivery process though underutilized. They are primarily viewed only as energy consumers even while it is the women that experience energy poverty much more severely than men. The result shows that there is great opportunity for collaboration with women on community energy projects that can contribute to ending energy poverty in Nigeria. Also there is opportunity in development that is yet to be harnessed in women's entrepreneurship & potential impacts for the household and agricultural energy sector in Nigeria because evidently financial liberation of women has a greater impact on the community than any other demographic

Women Asset Ownership and Household Poverty in Rural Nigeria

    Get PDF
Several methods have been adopted in studies involving household poverty but very few focused on structural causes and constraints to poverty. Women being most times the homemaker occupy a very important position in the household. This study employed Women Asset Approach to assess household poverty in South-West Nigeria.  Data collected from 363 respondents sampled through a multistage sampling procedure were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Probit Regression analysis. The average age of women sampled in study was 45 years while the average income was ₦33,158 (about $195 as at the time of the study). The Asset which had the highest value in the PCA reduction was mobile phone (0.4548) and the lowest Asset Value was black and white television (-0.0430). The mean of the poverty quintile which represented the poverty line was 1.6574. The Logit regression result revealed that education, marital status and income were significant determinants of poverty status in the study area. The study recommended that governments at all levels should enact and enforce policies which will make female education compulsory. Implementation of effective women empowerment programme should be embarked upon in order to encourage alternative sources of income and vocations thereby reducing household poverty

Integrated Communication Systems and Kinesic Code-Switching in Interpersonal Interaction

    Get PDF
The purpose of the study is to find support for the integrated communication systems hypothesis. To find support for this hypothesis a specific group of participants were selected: bicultural and bilingual individuals that were tested in four different conditions. A new and highly reliable motion capture system together with special software was used to measure gesture velocity. Two working hypothesis were formulated. The secondary hypothesis was verified: the bicultural and bilingual participants change their gestural pattern depending on what language they speak. We call this a kinesic code-switching. The tendency is somewhat stronger in the face-to-face condition compared to the audio only condition. The primary hypothesis was supported in competition with alternative hypotheses: the only hypothesis that can fit all the results in this study, all four test conditions, is the integrated systems hypothesis. The participants most likely use two intertwined communication systems when they communicate in an interpersonal situation

The Estimation of Potential Yield of Water Hyacinth: A Tool for Environmental Management and an Economic Resource for the Niger Delta Region

    Get PDF
Water hyacinth has seriously infested the waters of the Niger Delta region, cutting across the fresh water aquatic environment of the states that make up the Niger Delta states. However, there is hardly any comprehensive empirical study towards estimating the potential yield of this weed, which though an environmental nuisance, has enormous economic uses. It is only when a realistic estimate of the annual yields available of the weed in the region becomes available, that a considerable investment in its economic utilization can be undertaken. This research was conducted using remote sensing techniques (GIS) via satellite imagery analysis and reconnaissance surveys to conduct a yield assessment survey of the weed in the region. The principal yield parameters of interest focused on by this research are its mass (weight) and extent of spread (distribution) in the region. The distribution and level of abundance of water hyacinth within the Niger Delta region were equally assessed using a combination of both satellite imagery data and extrapolation methods developed exclusively for this study. Satellite imagery data from National Space Development and Research Agency were processed as a basis to evaluate the estimated surface area coverage of water hyacinth across the region.  Standard indices from literature were then used as a bench mark to combine with the satellite imagery estimates in determining the approximate total abundance of the water hyacinth in the region. Names of major rivers and creeks where this weed occurs were also identified through satellite imagery. The study arrived at a total biomass estimate of the weed in the region to be 3,225,000 tons/for the region/year. The study concluded that such yield value annually is adequate to invest in large facilities that could be used to economically utilize the weed and also indirectly control its myriad of environmental problems in the region

The growing awareness of the contributions of landscaping to real property and the eco-system in general has made real estate industry to integrate landscaping into property decisions. However, little is known about the individual's willingness to pay for the landscape features as consumers do not really have a clear understanding of the landscape value and its connection to property investment. Thus, this study examined the tenants' willingness to pay for landscape features, and the factors that determine their willingness to pay. Data was gotten from ninety three (93) tenants of residential properties within Alagbaka Government Reservation Area (G.R.A) through structured questionnaire. The retrieved data were analyzed using the Frequency Distribution tables to analyze the socio "“ economic characteristics of the respondents, and Binary Logistic Regression Model based on the Contingent Valuation Method to analyze the tenants' willingness to pay for the landscape features and the factors responsible for such choices. The study revealed that tenants are willing to pay bid amount of rent for the incorporation of landscape features into housing process. It further revealed that factors such as Length of stay, Fence and retaining walls, Income, Trees and Shrubs significantly influence tenants' willingness to pay for landscaping. Therefore, the study recommended that landscape be encouraged and properly managed to ensure that it fulfills the full potential of its lifespan and for optimum returns from the properties

Impacts of Electrical Hazards on Nigerian Construction Industries with a View to Provide Safety Measures- Case Study of Kaptron Technologies

    Get PDF
Electrical hazard remains a global occurrence that plagues construction industries in Nigeria Electricity is one of the most common causes of fires, electric shocks, electrocutions and thermal burns in construction industries. Because electricity is a familiar part of our lives, it is often not treated with enough caution. As a result, an average of one worker is electrocuted on the job every day of every year during construction work.  No one can replace a worker or loved one that has died or suffered an irreparable consequence of an electrical accident. Researchers are of the opinion that electrical safety in the construction sector is an indispensable component for economic development of the country.  In the light of the above, this paper examines the impacts of electrical hazards on the Nigerian construction industries with a view to provide safety measures using Kaaptron technologies as case study. The amount of current the body can withstand, the time it takes a body to be electrocuted when in contact with electricity and risk analyses were issues considered in this study. This study also used a participatory appraisal technique whereby, the electrical engineers and technicians were made to identify the types and magnitude of electrical hazards they encounter in their daily lives. The overall study shows that tasks performed under wet conditions could draw current as high as 480mA and that a body of 500Ω resistance has just 0.2s to be electrocuted when in contact with a 120v supply. The risk analysis revealed that 6 out of 10 construction devices were not safe to work on. Safety measures to eliminate injuries or deaths at construction sites were proffered

The on going contentious national debate on the removal of the petrol product subsidy is such a matter of national interest that requires adequate policy to avoid social crisis. This paper will study how the fuel subsidy that was set in place to benefit and improve the social and economic welfare of the people is becoming an endemic problem. The paper will underscore the various effects of the subsidy removal since it is likely that the government is determined to toe the line of its removal. It is certain that Nigerian sustainable economic growth cannot be achieved without the subsidy and the paper will prove the federal government wrong for taking the view that subsidy removal is an important element in the larger scheme to accelerate Nigerian's economic development. A Desktop Study (2011). Finally, solutions and reforms shall be recommended after evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of various proposals pro or against

    Get PDF
Gilgit-Baltistan is an administrative unit of the Pakistan and commonly known as "˜Flashpoint of Asia'. It is the hub, the crow's nest and the fulcrum of the Asia and the "˜Roof of the World'. This paper discusses the land tenure and title system in Gilgit-Baltistan. Some of the area is settled and has been brought under formal systems of land administration, similar to that of Pakistan, where records-of-rights are available. Major area still remains unsettled. Owing to absence of accurate and reliable system of land records, registration and taxation, development of this region has been eclipsed by enormous proportions. While tracking history of land management, analysis of different laws/rules and assessing capacity of human resource employed in this sector, this paper suggests policy, regulatory and institutional recommendations towards developing a regime of secure tenures and titles in this region
