The Benefits of Living with Close Others: A Longitudinal Examination of Mental Health Before and During a Global Stressor
For better or worse, the people we live with may exert a powerful influence on our mental health, perhaps especially during times of stress. The COVID-19 pandemic—a large-scale stressor that prompted health recommendations to stay home to reduce disease spread—provided a unique context for examining how the people we share our homes with may shape our mental health. A seven-wave longitudinal study assessed mental health month-to-month before and during the pandemic (February through September, 2020) in two diverse samples of U.S. adults (N = 656; N = 544). Pre-registered analyses demonstrated that people living with close others (children and/or romantic partners) experienced better well-being before and during the pandemic’s first six months. These groups also experienced unique increases in ill-being during the pandemic’s onset, but parents’ ill-being also recovered more quickly. These findings highlight the crucial protective function of close relationships for mental health both generally and amidst a pandemic
Mental health and risk-taking among refugees in Lebanon
Lebanon is rapidly adapting public services meet local needs as well those of refugees from conflict regions such as Syria. However, these challenges are complicated by high volumes of individuals with poor mental health, who are also at risk of poor decision-making and may avoid use of health services due to low trust in government institutions, among other reasons.
Over 700 individuals residing in Lebanon, including Syrian refugees and Palestinians from Lebanon, completed a series of measures covering decision-making with risk, mental health, and trust. Analyses focused on whether there were significant relationships between these three, and if various factors influencing those relationships could be useful for health policy in Lebanon and other regions affected by conflict-related population movement.
This study finds that higher subjective well-being was associated with more risk-taking among refugees (β = 0·07, SE = 0·02, z = 4·63, p < ·01), but not among the Lebanese host population (β = -0·003, SE = 0·01, z = -0·32, p =·75). However, average subjective well-being did not significantly differ between the Lebanese host population and the refugees (absolute difference = -1·27, 95%CI = [-2·83, 0·29], on a 60-point scale), or between Syrian and Palestinian refugees (absolute difference = -1·53, 95%CI = [-4·16, 1·08]). There were moderate effects of behavioral interventions on risk-taking in terms of increased advantageous choices.
There is a clear pattern of greater risk-taking for refugees with better subjective well-being. This is an important finding as greater risk-taking is associated with a number of negative health outcomes, particularly in vulnerable populations. While the behavioural interventions do show some effect on improving advantageous choice, these risk patterns are of clear interest to policymakers dealing with health and well-being of all residents in Lebanon
Predictors of listening-related fatigue across the adult lifespan
Listening-related fatigue is a potentially serious negative consequence of an aging auditory and cognitive system. However, the impact of age on listening-related fatigue, and the factors underpinning any such effect, remain unexplored. Using data from a large sample of adults (N = 281), we conducted a conditional process analysis to examine potential mediators and moderators of age-related changes in listening-related fatigue. Mediation analyses revealed opposing effects of age on listening-related fatigue; aging was associated with increased listening-related fatigue for individuals with higher self-reported hearing impairment, but also decreased listening-related fatigue via reductions in mood disturbance and sensory processing sensitivity. Results also suggested that the effect of auditory attention ability on listening-related fatigue was moderated by sensitivity; for individuals with high sensory processing sensitivity, better auditory attention ability was associated with increased fatigue. These findings shed light on the perceptual, cognitive, and psychological factors underlying age-related changes in listening-related fatigue
COVID-19 mutation variant mechanism
The UK government has recently announced how the Covid19 virus has mutated, causing a surge in the cases in Essex, and other parts of England, however, this mutation had already been observed later in the Summer 2020 in a population of Minks and in Denmark. A “prescient” analysis of the mutation is explored in this short paper. Potential symptoms may involve not just high fever but more infections due to major cough expulsion from increased hydrosolubility of the viral proteins
On the Rational Boundedness of Cognitive Control: Shared Versus Separated Representations
One of the most fundamental and striking limitations of human cognition appears to be a constraint in the number of control-dependent processes that can be executed at one time. This constraint motivates one of the most influential tenets of cognitive psychology: that cognitive control relies on a central, limited-capacity processing mechanism that imposes a seriality constraint on processing. Here we provide a formally explicit challenge to this view. We argue that the causality is reversed: the constraints on control-dependent behavior reflect a rational bound that control mechanisms impose on processing, to prevent processing interference that arises if two or more tasks engage the same representations required to perform the tasks. We use both mathematical and numerical analyses of shared representations in neural network architectures to provide a formal grounding for this argument–historically known as "multiple-resource theory"–and demonstrate its ability to explain a wide range of phenomena associated with control-dependent behavior. Furthermore, we argue that the need for control, arising from the shared use of the same representations by different tasks, reflects the optimization of a fundamental trade-off intrinsic to network architectures: the increase in learning efficacy associated with the use of shared representations, versus the efficiency of parallel processing (i.e., multitasking) associated with task-dedicated representations. The theory helps frame a formally rigorous, normative approach to the trade-off between control-dependent processing versus automaticity, and how this relates to a number of other fundamental principles and phenomena concerning cognitive function, and computation more generally
Temporal dynamics of shared leadership
In this diary study, we consider shared leadership and team workload as antecedents of team mental health. We draw on conservation of resources theory to theorize how linear change trajectories of shared leadership are related to change trajectories in team members’ shared well-being and emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, we investigate the interaction between change trajectories of shared leadership and team workload, predicting that change in shared leadership will be more strongly related to change in team mental health when team workload increases. 265 team members nested in 77 teams completed a daily diary survey over five consecutive workdays. As hypothesized, an increase in shared leadership was associated with an increase in team well-being and a decrease in emotional exhaustion over time. Further, shared leadership interacted with team workload, such that an increase in shared leadership was more strongly associated with a decrease in shared emotional exhaustion when team workload increased. However, team member well-being was not affected by such an interaction. These findings address the missing link between shared leadership and team well-being and exhaustion, establish shared leadership as an important team resource, and contribute a temporal perspective on shared leadership as a dynamic team phenomenon
“Cochlearia officinalis L. as a prophylactic for Covid19”
Perspective / opinion. A copycat of this IP preprint article has recently appeared on a low quality journal which has accepted and published it, however it is IP theft and it is not legal, nor moral. The journal impact factor is 3 and the journal site is supposedly at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. This is a violation and it should be removed. These series of works were not carried out neither in Algeria, nor in the Netherlands. It does not matter if it is a partial IP theft, until the preprint is not published, other articles cannot be accepted without the citation as that is IP theft. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0014299920308517?via%3Dihu
