An efficient new assay for measuring zebrafish anxiety: tall tanks that better characterize between-individual differences
Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are increasingly being used to model anxiety. A common behavioral assay employed for assessing anxiety-like behaviors in zebrafish is the “novel tank test”. We hypothesized that using deeper tanks in this test would result in greater between-individual variation in behavioral responses and a more ‘repeatable’ assay. After mapping the literature and identifying common behavioral parameters used in analysis, we performed novel tank anxiety tests in both custom-designed ‘tall’ tanks with increased depth and ‘short’ trapezoidal tanks. We compared the repeatability of the behavioral parameters between tall and short tanks and also investigated sex differences. Overall, regardless of tank depth, almost all behavioral parameters associated with anxiety in zebrafish were significantly repeatable (R = 0.24 to 0.60). Importantly, our tall tanks better captured between-individual differences, resulting in higher repeatability estimates (average repeatability tall tanks: R = 0.46; average repeatability short tanks: R = 0.36) and clearer sex differences. Our assay using tall tanks has advantages over tests based on short tanks which underestimate repeatability. We argue that use of deeper tanks will improve the reliability of behavioral data across studies using novel tank tests for zebrafish. Our results also call for increased attention in designing the most appropriate assay in biomedical and behavioral sciences as current methods may lack the sensitivity to detect subtle, yet important, information, such as between-individual variation, an important component in assessing the reliability of behavioral data

Classification and Quantification of Cultural Basements and Elements Used in Multicultural Families
Autoethnographic research for structuring personal cultural background formed in multicultural family in the period of social and economic collapse. In the process of research, the following has been discovered: a) respondent may practice regularly more than 30 cultural elements obtained from 8 cultural basements unrelated to each other; b) practiced cultural basements and elements may follow some strict numeric and categorical patterns that may have different social implications; c) cultural basements and elements considered by respondent as main may be practiced unconsciously until getting into conflicts with relatives and society; d) even minor source of information or minor detail of daily lifestyle which is insignificant at the first sight may influence adult life heavily; e) “exotic” cultures practiced by respondent may relate to his factual undocumented genetic ancestry even if amount of this ancestry does not exceed several percents
Reflective phenomenography: elaborating on the reflective practice framework for phenomenographic data analysis
Over the last two decades, one can notice a considerable turn to the reflective qualitative inquiry. However, in phenomenographic research design, the role and value of reflection are often neglected. This paper elaborates on the Reflective Practice Framework for phenomenographic method of data analysis developed as a result of undertaking an empirical phenomenographic research. The paper considers genealogy of the concept reflection and models for reflection in qualitative research to discuss the theoretical foundations of the proposed Framework. Two levels and five steps of the Framework are explained, and an example of how the Framework can advance analysis of unstructured phenomenographic data is provided
Blindsight.
For over a century research has demonstrated that damage to primary visual cortex does not eliminate all capacity for visual processing in the brain. From Riddoch’s (1917) early demonstration of intact motion processing for blind field stimuli, to the iconic work of Weiskrantz and colleagues (1974) showing reliable spatial localization, it is clear that secondary visual pathways that bypass V1 carry information to the visual brain that in turn influences behavior. In this chapter we briefly outline the history and phenomena associated with blindsight, before discussing the nature of the secondary visual pathways that support residual visual processing in the absence of V1. We finish with some speculation as to the functional characteristics of these secondary pathways
Photonic RF and microwave fractional differentiation, integration, and Hilbert transforms with optical Kerr micro-combs
Integrated Kerr micro-combs are a powerful source of multiple wavelength channels for photonic radio frequency (RF) and microwave signal processing, particularly for transversal filter systems. They offer significant advantages featuring a compact device footprint, high versatility, large numbers of wavelengths, and wide Nyquist bands. We review progress photonic RF and microwave high bandwidth temporal signal processing based on Kerr micro-combs with comb spacings from 49GHz to 200GHz. We focus on integral and fractional Hilbert transforms, differentiators as well as integrators. The future potential of optical micro-combs for RF photonic applications in terms of functionality and ability to realize integrated solutions is also discussed
Bayes Factors for Mixed Models
Although Bayesian linear mixed effects models are increasingly popular for analysis of within-subject designs in psychology and other fields, there remains considerable ambiguity on the most appropriate Bayes factor hypothesis test to quantify the degree to which the data support the presence or absence of an experimental effect. Specifically, different choices for both the null model and the alternative model are possible, and each choice constitutes a different definition of an effect resulting in a different test outcome. We outline the common approaches and focus on the impact of aggregation, the effect of measurement error, the choice of prior distribution, and the detection of interactions. For concreteness, three example scenarios showcase how seemingly innocuous choices can lead to dramatic differences in statistical evidence. We hope this work will facilitate a more explicit discussion about best practices in Bayes factor hypothesis testing in mixed models
Kerendahan Hati Seorang Pemimpin: Study Kepemiminan Kristen
On progression in meditation: habit, curiosity, and identity
I this essay, I reflect on several progressions of meditation: Formal meditation becomes a habit; Mindfulness becomes more of a mode of being; Experiencing the world with a little more empathy, intensity, and tenderness; Clear viewing of what the mind’s doing; More curiosity and serendipity; Identities become less tangible and unnecessary suffering disappears
Negative Speaks Louder than Positive: Negative Implicit Partner Evaluations Forecast Destructive Daily Interactions and Relationship Decline
Romantic relationships are affectively complex. Any given interaction consists of both rewarding and aversive features. Recent work has shown that implicit partner evaluations (IPEs)—evaluations spontaneously triggered when one thinks about one’s partner—are also affectively complex. Does such complexity in IPEs help individuals navigate rewarding and aversive aspects inherent in interactions? The present work examined the proposition that negative IPEs uniquely forecast aversive daily relationship behaviors, whereas positive IPEs uniquely forecast rewarding daily relationship behaviors. Using a longitudinal design with a daily diary component, time-1 negative IPEs forecasted perceiving and enacting negative behaviors during a 14-day daily diary, which, in turn, predicted deterioration in explicit partner and relationship evaluations three-months later. The predictive ability of negative IPEs remained even after statistically controlling for positive IPEs and explicit evaluations. Positive IPEs were weak and inconsistent predictors of outcomes. We discuss the differential functions of negative and positive IPEs within relationships
